daytripper05 said: Rye grain is a lot cheaper around here too. I just called around and ordered a 50lbs for $17 where the only other local place I could find it was Whole Foods for $2 a lb. Any RGS I found was minimum $1 per lb.
I got 50 lbs of RGS for $29.99 at my local Tractor Supply Co.
It was the only Rye I could find. *shrugs* it works (or hopefully it will)

Alright so I've just prepared 2 jars like this:
300 ml DRY rye grass seed a bit of powdered gypsum 150 ml half coffee half water a spoonful of spent coffee grounds
All this has been shaken and is now sitting on a shelf. I'll PC them tonight or tomorrow.
Does this sound right? I sure hope so, I'm getting tired of screwing up

Rye berries look almost exactly like sugar smacks cereal (brown, oblong with a butt crack), while the grass seed looks kinda like fennel (long pointy things).

That would be my interpretation of how to prep it.

Well I PCd that jar. I fear I may have cooked it, but I'm going to knock it up anyway.
It's far more promising then any of my other jars. I have another jar (I can only PC one at a time, it's rather depressing). With that one I'll use more water, I was just afraid of flooding the jar.
I still think there's a chance that the first jar will do ok. If I'm afraid it's too dry is there a way I could rehydrate it? I have some distilled water I could inject into it, if that would work.
It may be best for me to knock it up without trying to rehydrate it. What would you all suggest?
With all that said, I think I've finally got the process figured out. I just need to add more water and not be so afraid to flood the jar. And I need to situate it so I can be in the same room with the PC, because I could have smelled/heard that it was starting to boil dry before it cooked.
All I can say is that, while it's not success per se, I'm just delighted that I've achieved some progress.

There is some talk about rehydrating for the purpose of increased sclerotia formation, of which it is assumed that sterile water would be the best candidate. Please don't contaminate your sterile growing environment by putting 'dirty' water in, make sure it's 'clean' first.
Given your lack of funding and perchance for shooting expensive spores at 'iffy' jars, I would suggest you pick up LC in the immediate future.
Assuming that you have the spores to spare: Nock it now, don't rehydrate first. Shrooms are better too dry than too wet. if you log em out now, they'll just grow trich and/or stall.
If you can get it to take dry and fully colonize, you'll have a much better shot of re-hydrating; you'll be less likely to toss too much water at it.
as for the PC - make sure you are backing off the heat a bit once you get it to jiggle. being as working in a restricted environment, make sure that you can run your PC as long as needed w/o running dry. load up the sucker with some already donked up garbage just to see how much water you need, how much you can put it in w/o flooding, how hot you need to keep it, etc. Get to know your equipment.
Good luck with the stones. I'm waiting till the stars align before I start mine.

Bout the time I get the dough to build a flow hood and the stones to work with agar; or when I find a Mex - A print, which ever comes first.
I'll probably settle to a not-so-jenky (a.k.a. easier to use) glovebox. I am boiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiing paranoid about sterility, and my glove box won't work for anything requiring finesse.

Ah, I thought you were referring to an actual alignment I'm sure there are those out there who inoculate in accordance to cosmic events. *shrugs*

I'm a psychonaut, not a space cadet
@ 2 am on a Friday, I'm a little less than coherent from time to time. please excuse my eccentricities.
At any rate, best of luck with the stones. I'm really really hyped to start myself, I'm just stuck playing the waiting game.
