i'm worried about my job and my shroomery involvement
    #11130654 - 09/26/09 12:45 PM (3 years, 7 months ago)

I'm in a training program through my university for a job that is very....... "sensitive". If anyone ever linked my shroomery account to my RL identity, I think I'd have to find a new career. Luckily, I'm not in law enforcement and no one in my field is what you'd call "computer savvy", but it still makes me paranoid.

Also, I have a rather freckled past. I don't have any convictions or arrests, but I'm concerned that people in the community might find out about it and my authority would be undermined. As it stands, I need to achieve total separation between my private/past and professional life, and I'm concerned that might not happen. While I live in a big city, people here like to gossip and I'm almost sure someone will discover who I really am and I'll be forced to change careers.

Does anybody have any advice? I'm thinking about leaving the state and changing my name in a few years, just to avoid any issues. Does anyone else out there worry about their shroomery account coming back to bite them in the ass? How can I disassociate myself with my account (and my private life???)

~Paranoid and anonynous

stop trying to live a double life. anyone who would want to have you thrown in jail or ruin your career over mushrooms doesn't sound like someone you want to be around. sounds like you need to take a break from you work for a while and get back in touch with yourself and nature.

My career is what I want to do for the rest of my life. I can't picture doing anything but this job. It is the most rewarding job in the whole world, and I am sure it is what god put me here to do. I am naturally gifted in this area and could never give it up. As a result, I have made ENORMOUS sacrifices in my personal life. No one is trying to ruin my career over mushrooms.  What I am concerned about is people finding out about my past, or associating my shroomery account with my real life identity. I have said some pretty insane shit on this site and I'm worried about it coming back to me. Political affiliation and insubordinate or anti-authoritarian leanings are things that can disqualify you from my career. I need to do everything possible to obscure those aspects of my personality from public view. If I didn't, I wouldn't be able to do my job effectively.

The whole situation is a terrible conflict, but I need to figure out how to navigate it. If I don't, I will lose my life's work before I begin it.

If there is a god he certainly doesn't give a flying fucking about human beings and their silly fucking 21st century careers.

If the shroomery is a problem for you - GTFO. grow up.

How could anyone possibly link you to an anonymous account on a message board?

That's an excellent question #4.

Before I enter my position, federal, state, and local governments will perform extensive background checks. This includes investigating past internet aliases, including anonymous aliases attached to known IP addresses. It's entirely possible that my shroomery alias could be found. However, it's much more likely that they could discover something unfavorable in my RL past.

#3, I am taking your advice - within the next year, I will either phase out my shroomery use entirely or censor my posts to not include inflamatory or radical statements. Because the shroomery does not allow members to delete accounts entirely, I have become concerned that my participation on this site could become a liability. What I am looking for in this thread is advice on decreasing my liability due to my involvement with this site. Any advice at all would be welcome.

Will this really work? What about all the information cached on internet servers? Smashing my harddrive won't take care of that shit. If there's any kind of government record of internet traffic on this site, I'm boned. My job is with the government btw, and any information the government obtains will be included in my background check. This isn't some corporate background check where it only reveals shit kept on your public record.

Has anybody ever hired some kind of service that will clean up their internet history? How do I get hooked up with those people? I'd rather just find some independent computer hacker and not go through a public service, but anything will suffice.

How long have you been a member here? How many posts do you have? (approx), and what forums do you generally post in?

I'm sure you could pay Ythan off to delete you entire post history and account. It might not be cheap, but money talks.

how in the hell would they even know about 'past internet aliases and anonymous web postings? unless you're going to work for the NSA you're being fed a line of bullshit.

i have friends that work at treasury, and at homeland security. they've lived their lives like we do here, no problems for them. hell, i've even sent them emails about drugs and links to shroomery postings, nothing has ever happened...and they've been at their jobs 10 years plus...

#1 if you have a legitimate concern talk to a moderator. in certain cases they have completely deleted users posts or handed out name changes.

also, unless you are going into a government position, you don't need to worry about an internet alias. no other institutions can realistically petition internet providers for your old IP info..

if it's some public position, your biggest problem would be citizens or journalists connecting the dots from your friends or your own slip ups.

Thankyou, that is very encouraging. I appreciate your helpfulness.

In the past two weeks the training has focused intensively on scaring the shit out of us about our background checks. Most people in the program are now hiring lawyers to get even the tiniest things from their records expunged. This is a very sensitive position because of the work I will do in the local community, and the local community is VERY, VERY conservative. I know of a person who lost their job for having too many parking tickets. It's not so much a problem of my BOSS discovering things, but those things being released into the community. Mostly I am worried about people gossiping about my past life, and not my internet use. However, I cannot ignore the fact that I have to be increasingly careful about self-disclosure on the internet.

I am going into a government position, with a lot of public and media scrutiny, as well as community scrutiny.

lol.

I can't believe they'll really let me do it either. I've passed the first round of checks officially, last tuesday. Now the reality has set in that I might actually be given some minor power in a government job. I'm just trying to cover my ass so a good degree and years of training don't go out the window.

Really, this is only a problem in the area I'm in. The same position in a different state wouldn't be nearly as problematic - in fact, my background would be considered an asset. Due to personal reasons though, I'm sort of bound here for the time being. I have some serious financial responsibilities looming in the near future and my ability to get a job is more important than ever.

As others have said, there is essentially no chance that they can link an "internet alias" with your RL identity.

If its a federal job, then it has to be posted on the U.S. government website.  If so, it'll will inform you of the level of security you will be required to have.

The irony is that the government actually has regulations in place so that they cannot discriminate against you.

Your past is what got you to where you are today.  Don't regret any of it OP.

Sounds like a success story.

goodluck.

I wouldn't worry about shroomery involvement though I will say that a few members have posted things that easily allowed me to discover their real name, location, and past friends. Meta-data is a bitch.

I wouldn't worry so much about the whole IP thing. I would remove posts that personally identify you in anyway, I would remove photos and attachements, I would start using TOR to log in to the shroomery assuming you have enough posts to do so.

I have considered security sensitive positions that sound like they have similar requirements to what you describe. I am mostly worried about people I know but an not close friends with running their mouths or spreading rumors. It hasn't helped that I burned some bridges with friends who became assholes.  Most serious background checks [several friends applied to the CIA] are based on interviewing people from the past and using the results of polygraphs to get leads on what to ask (past drug usage, etc). Seems like your worry as well. Moving won't help this and I think changing you name down the road will set off flags if you ever have to go through a check again.

I doubt that computer usage especially past computer usage really falls into it.  I hope your alias here is not something you've used elsewhere. If it is, remove those as much as possible. Though we are headed that way and it is good to take precautions.

Good luck and don't sweat it!

Make your shroomery shit anonymous dude
I had an employer talk to me about my myspace account once this chick at work told everyone I had pics of guns and she was an anti second amendment communist bitch so she talked like I was a terrorist for owning guns and told my boss about these pics.

since you reflect your company your employer can firer you based on shit you do outside the workplace. it's sad but true

I didn't get fired but my boss had a talk with me and asked my to make my pics private so co-workers couldn't access them.
