im happy to find the usual 5-10 fruits scattered along a huge trail and hidden completly out of sight sometimes by grass each time i hunt.. but some clusters like that would be nice.
ive done my fair share of hunting in various places.. and i cant find anything in the woods. or near pine. o.O
mine grow in the sun. is that wierd? they make you trip harder than cubes

I found some interesting specimens today. Are they what I think they are? I am in the process of doing a spore print, but they are water logged, so should I transfer them to a new piece of paper when they dry out a little, or should I just wait for the paper to dry out? Being soaked, I imagine it may take a while for them to bruise.

Look like Gymnopus dryophilus to me. If so, the print will be white. Transfer to a dark piece of paper, a mirror, aluminum foil or glass.

I took a few more close ups with a crappy digital camera. It looks to me like the stems are starting to stain a little blue. I dropped the darker one, they are soaking wet. Any second opinions?

Definately not weilii sorry. Not active for that matter. I'm sure someone will pop up with a name later I don't feel like looking.

Not with a cheap digital camera, but with a good film camera, yes. Here are some Jack O Lanterns.

I found them out walking about 10 minutes from my house. Seeing as how I spent 10 minutes examining, smelling and photographing them, I decided not to pick them up at the time. Now I need to figure out If I should go back in my car and get them.

Sorry I am brand new. I have been hunting edible mushrooms for a while. I just here recently decided to start looking for "other" mushrooms. Don't know who weilii is, but if you want me to pretend to be him I will.

Very good. Thank you. They were one of the most difficult if not the most difficult mushroom to pull up that was growing in the ground, and it was raining like hell today, so the soil was soaked. I guess now I know what I am looking for. I will do a spore print to be sure, but as they are waterlogged, should I let them dry a little first?

This is probably in the wrong section, sorry if it is. I do not have any scales. If one wanted to try these for the very first time, what would one recommend as in the number of mushrooms? My guess would be start out with 1/2.

photolurp, cut with scissors or knife so as to not disturb the mycellium and they will come back. dude if you are considering ingesting those you need to make some tea, unless you can swallow anything.
I check mine every day. no they do not fruit every day but it is easy to miss pins.
consider making your very own post to share your next finds.
all that aside, congratulations on your first magic find.

Yes I know to cut to avoid damaging the mycelium, shame on me. I did it for 2 reasons: I had heard that they were hard to pull out of the ground, and I wanted to see. Also I was in a subdivision. My car could possibly be seen by 5 houses, but my actual activities could be only seen by 1 house. I guess I shouldn't be so paranoid. I have hunted edible table mushrooms for over a year, and no one has ever said a word. Perhaps I will start a new post if I have any luck. Here are a few more not so good photos.

Why do weilii only grow in N. GA?
"P. weilii is described as growing in red-clay soils covered with a thin layer of loblolly pine needles underneath sweetgum trees. It has also been reported growing in association with Bermuda grass lawns."
Well in AL we have everything in the above quote, but no weilii.
Would it be possible for me single-handedly introduce the species to my area lol? Like loading a model rocket parachute with GRAMS of weilii spore powder.
I should try to start an outdoor patch and see how it goes.

Why do weilii only grow in N. GA? Because God wanted us to be happy. I will be honest, one of the reasons I went after this exact species is that it only grows in my part of the state. I thought that was pretty cool. I cannot think of any mushrooms that only grow in N. GA off the top of my head.

Very cool shots, This looks like a typical backyard. I am going to put some spores in areas that look the same and see what happens.
Stupid question...are woodland weilii the same as these?

I went back to my location and here is what I found. These were growing nearby. I think the first three are probably nothing, was wondering if they could be little ones. I do not think they are. But I think the 4Th picture may just be pins. And as far as the last picture, in the grass, does anyone know what that is?

yeah they are n ga i think thats just how they naturally grow and when the ground is disturbed it scatters spores and spreads the mycelium to developed areas where it can colonize a little easier. Clay is hard as shit once its packed down and i think thats why they like disturbed areas so much.

You are absolutely correct, very good info phish!!!
Ive seen friends make homemade weilii patches by using a pick and shovel to break up the soil at their homes and planting some whole specimens with a few strands of mycelium still connected to the bottom, they added old highly decomposed wood to the mixture of soil with other things (grass, leaves, etc) for extra nutrients.
Some of these homemade patches took 6-8 months to fruit, some fruited the year after they were made.
Anyways very good info phish.

The fifth photo reminds me of a Chlorophylum pin. That brown on the cap should peel as it gets larger if my guess is right .

I haven't seen a cluster of weilii that big in a while 3rd down, far left. Just curious, what town you hunting in? They seem like they just keep flushing and flushing at my spots, no end in sight. Thanks to all this rain we have been getting... shits crazy. One of my spots is completely underwater but I am not complaining. bring on the rain.

I found this little fellow all by himself today, the rain chased me away. I will have to go back for a better look tomorrow. I know it is only 1, but you know how the saying goes: a mushroom a day keeps the doctor away. This is amazing, two areas within a mile or two of my house. Notice how the bugs have eaten it?
 I wonder how they feel?
I also found this patch of odd looking fungi nearby. They looked promising from a distance.

Make a WBS/Grain Transfer Jar. When putting the sclerota in the jar, try to use sterile procedure by dipping it in 3% H2O2.

I keep looking to my jar of dried mushrooms, but I should know better. It has been since I was a teenager that I ate acid, I know it is not the same. And yes, I am the age that when I was younger, we said could not be trusted. No one should eat them if irritated, right? Will not make me feel better, just a bad trip.

Well, I wouldn't eat mushrooms in a bad mood, expecting to be made happy by them, but if you approach them from the right perspective, they could lend insight to your crappy mood and perhaps loosen up your stressedness and point out to you that there are good things to appreciate...

Big ass fucking lol right there. You ever tried making a grain jar from a section of an indoor fruit? Let alone some contaminated spore covered shit from the yard, haha. Agar is your only chance in hell of getting some good clean weilii jar spawn.

beautiful phish. good to see you. I have never ever found a cluster bigger than two. I kind of get the impression it's thunderdome for them, two mushies enter, one leaves. My clusters are always very young. I've also never (never ever) found them on pinestraw. And especially not in the woods, is that where you are in those pics?

its at the front of a neighborhood in a pinestraw bed behind these big juniper bushes. ive found alot of patches identical to this one but finally one that has easy access and is not right in front of a bunch of houses. I typically find them in the grass first then after looking around i start finding them in all kinds of things. This year i have found weilii in red and black wood chips, fescue and bermuda grass, pinestraw and straight clay. Ive found them under holly bushes, magnolia trees, maple trees, bradford pair trees, sweet gum trees, and of course loblolly pinetrees which are the pines with the longer needles. look at the bedlines in the front of neighborhoods where the grass meets the pinestraw and look for caps sticking up, then just investigate it. it works i promise...

Make a WBS/Grain Transfer Jar. When putting the sclerota in the jar, try to use sterile procedure by dipping it in 3% H2O2.
Big ass fucking lol right there. You ever tried making a grain jar from a section of an indoor fruit? Let alone some contaminated spore covered shit from the yard, haha. Agar is your only chance in hell of getting some good clean weilii jar spawn.
not that big of a deal. i had some mature weilii in the ground away from my patch where i was prb never gonna come back, and there was a flower pot in the woods nearby, so i went and got the flower pot and removed the whole chunk of ground. to perform an expieriment and see if they would grow more, you see, im pretty new to this and its all fun.
nice attitude

I now have four new friends. Not very big, ranging in size from a dime to a quarter. Found them yesterday. I guess if they are found in the same location, smell the same, look the same, and bruise blue, then you do not need to do a spore print.

OK, here we go. I found a mushroom that looks similar, but it has white gills, is fragile, and does not bruise blue (or any color for that matter.) But it smells like the others, a very strong cucumber smell. Sorry, no photos this evening, as the crappy digital camera does not take very good up close macros with flash at night (it severely over-exposes.) I am nearly 100% certain that it is not p. weilii, but wondering what it may be. I guess that it is widely accepted that it must bruise blue if it is active. Any idea what I may have? If I was a blind person, and just smelled them, I would have eaten it..., sorry I have bad manners.

I have found a few like this, I was told mine were sporless weilii. You can compare pics if you like on my post, see if yours resemble them. Only a few bruised out of the bunch, and the gills never darkened up. I have ate both bruised and unbruised weilii and have not felt any difference in strength. Is there such thing as non-active weilii? I think this may be a rumor.

If you are talking to me, you will have to check the waste water treatment plant, I think the spores are floating down the Chattahoochee.

Yuck. I made the mistake of paddling that hooch. Thoroughly disgusting and seriously perturbing, considering it might have been a nice ride, if it hadn't been in sewage.
Gross, Georgia. Understand Ted Turner's daughter is supposed to be looking after that waterway. Well, i'm sure at least her big green house is clean? Pretty sure Lagrange sued Atlanta for some 60k/day or something for the untreated shit.
Better find spores pre-processing!
