I've been tempted to full out punch some women in the face and yes some of them do deserv a good slap when it is warrented but to continue a beating, that sounds like the dude has some problems so have yourself a beer.

like i said, i was at a friends house, and my friend is in the biz. so police attention would have been bad. we had just been smoking tons of pot in his front room.

You're lucky that dude was an untrustworthy heterosexual pussy. I do not advise picking a fight with anyone, and you could make an anonymous phone call to the police claiming it is a 'public disturbance'.
Now, I wouldn't have been beating my old lady in the first place, but if some neighbor-guy came over and punched me, lets just say I would not run. I'm small, I mean like 5'9" and 135 lbs.... but daily weight training and a few years of martial arts I can do a bit of damage. Some people are best not to pick a fight with.

what if he had pulled out a gun? Your life could have been snuffed out in one squeeze of the trigger. I can't say I'm against what you did though. I think a little more vigilantism would make a lot of scumbags think twice. Its just not the best course of action in this situation. To do it right, you should have put him in the hospital.

Props OP.
Through it all even if she hit him like a man to start it, a women will still take a hit like a woman, they tend to be physically more fragile than men. As a man I know I can walk away from a bitch if she's pissing me off that bad.
There is a point where you break up a fight, and there's a point where the fight is too one sided and drawn out to let an asshole get off with just breaking up the fight. This must be carefully assessed on a case by case basis.
As for calling in the pigs, FUCK THAT!! In my experience they are only useful in making peoples lives harder for there own sadistic enjoyment. Street justice has been the primary method of dealing with pieces of shit through most of history. I don't consider myself a violent person, but occasionally there comes the time that someone needs their ass beat for the benefit of everyone including themselves, I myself have had my ass beat and am a better person because of it. Besides I've been to jail and heard the screaming of an inmate being beat by the pigs for literally hours, then seen the man as he was dragged by wearing nothing but butt huggers and wrist/ankle cuffs, covered from head to toe in blood with the trusties mopping up the trail of blood leading from where they were beating him to the infirmary. That being said the criminal justice system cannot always be trusted to be what they claim to be. Personally I will never call nor talk to them for anything other than brutal murder/rape.
Dishing out an ass kicking was likely the best thing you could have done, with a little luck he'll learn a thing or 2 about managing his aggression. He doesn't have to go to jail, nor have his life suck because of the violent charges he would carry with him on his criminal record. And even if she did do something fucked up to ignite the fire it sounds like it was going to far and needed to stop.
