I'm thinking about squatting next year.
Anyone done it? Tips/Stories appreciated.

"Squatting is the act of occupying an abandoned or unoccupied space or building, usually residential,[1] that the squatter does not own, rent or otherwise have permission to use. Squatting is significantly more common in urban areas than rural areas, especially when urban decay occurs"

Just be alert and ready to run.
Builders, real estate agents, whoever... often call the cops before they even ask you to piss off/move on, so if you have been spotted just move.

I've squatted at a few abandoned houses, only ever for a few days at a time. Travel with only what you can carry. Don't carry one of those 400 dollar packs either, because then the cops will know that you're just looking to have fun rather than being a true vagabond.

You are one judgmental misinformed soul.
I'm not a free loader, and I'm one of the most respectful people around. I just don't agree with the amount of abandoned homes/buildings when here in Oz for example, theres a housing crisis.
If I'm asked to leave by the legal owner, I'd gladly comply. I'd attempt to fix/renovate the property as much as possible and generally be a good neighbor.
My friend is doing his masters in Physics, he squatted for 1yr because he couldn't afford renting. Not all squatters "have no respect" but are rather choosing a temporary way of life.
An example of "people with no respect"

Whats funny about that statement is that the owners don't care about the property otherwise it wouldn't go unused for years on end.

Yes you have absolutely no respect for other people. I could rape and kill women and have a masters in physics, who the fuck cares what education I have?
My parents and I moved to San Diego years ago, and had our neighbor spot squatters in the house. They cranked the AC bill a couple hundred dollars. No fucking respect.
I hope the police catch you.

I don't care if the police catch me. Thats my point... Legally I won't be doing anything wrong. Morally I won't be doing anything wrong.
I understand your experience with squatters was a negative one, but don't stereotype. It's like camping for free in a forest, do those people have "no fucking respect" either?

I've slept in abandoned places way out in bumfuck nowhere for a night a few times, but more out of adventure than necessity. They were all places where it was pretty doubtful that I would be discovered, so I can't really offer any good advice.
Good luck though man.

just be sure to clean up after yourself if you're planning on crashing long enough to where your presence is noticed. if the place is dirtied up, try to spot clean or make your new home somewhat presentable. definitely clean up syringe needles laying around.
be sure to get out of there before the sun comes up, if squatting at a construction site.
have fun. and be safe

I haven't done it, but would love to.
You are talking about doing this Solo? Hiding, or being public? Semi-permanently? Residential or industrial?
The large scale communal squats in NYC and europe sound really amazing...
How do you plan on cooking? What about toilet? Are you counting on having facilities hooked up?
microcosmpublishing.com might have some zines/info books about squating, and this might be a good start for info: http://squattheplanet.com/
You'd also probably find some information on Digihitch.com
Goodluck, you have my support! would love to hear more if you end up following through.

Squat in abandoned buildings all you want.
Just please take the time to wash your ass.
Being a vagabond for spiritual, economic, or personal reasons is fine.
Walking around looking and smelling like a turd is unnecessary and annoying to others with a sense of smell that hasn't been ruined by smoking cigarette butts on the ground.
Yes, I am being stereotypical--but the vagabonds around here just remind me of lazy pieces of shit. They are all down to free-load every public service except water to fucking bathe.

Preferably I'd look for an abandoned government building, preferably urban/city environment. I'd rather have a few people to squat with, for social and legal issues.
I would do all within my power to get utilities connected, but if thats not possible I will still maintain an acceptable hygiene standard. I don't intend to be a stinky bum.
I greatly enjoy camping, so it doesn't worry me to be cooking on camp stove's if need be. I don't plan on squatting all my life, but I think it would be a great experience. I would like to start something like the link I posted earlier.
I hope to cause no disrespect to land owner or neighbors, in certain situations with certain people, squat's can actually be more community friendly than the original proposed idea for the building.

graveflower here:
i have no exp on long term squatting, but a safe place to sleep just a tid bit when u have no cover is behind a trash bucket, those big industrial ones. no one will find u there also, buy cheap stuff to travel with, more likely then not, ur shit will be stolen. and don't trust squatters, i hate to stereotype, but most that i have met, are willing to do what ever they can to better their travels. i.e. steal ur stuff. especially the ones that have been squatting for years. and learn the lingo before you try it out. you don't want to be seen as a newb on the streets. people will take advantage >.<
all in all good luck, it's hard but WELL worth it. after traveling for just a few weeks, i changed my whole perspective on life.
o and really try to live minimally, it will give you tons of respect and you'll be so much more grateful when you get help from people and get back into the 'real' world.

I love this idea! Definitely not something I would do at this time in my life, but of circumstances were different, I would be open to it. And I believe there is much respect in this case. I mean, he's actually researching and planning this. And I know there's always abandonded buildings around, with wasted space... If I did this I would travel to a larger city on a freight train first, writing poems along the way (or maybe just twittering from my iphone)

a man that trains police officers in academies and also travels around, once gave me a ride when i was hitching. after it turned dark he offered to pay for my taco bell meal and half of my hotel room. i tried to decline but he says "he admires the vagabond life and he's learned a bit of himself that night."
then we went our separate ways. in a way he saved my life that day, cause i ran out of water, have been walking for 30 miles straight, and getting delusional from the dehydration

Have you actually seen what poledancers do?
Its not subjective, it IS erotic activity.
There are more practical ways to slide down a pole than with your legs spread and using your pussy as a brake. Ask the fire department.

I'm going to have a large hiking bag and probably a suitcase or 2. So what if I may have to move house often? I can always couchsurf/hostel it if I'm out of a house and have to find another.
I also plan to be starting university around this time. I will be overseas doing this. I plan on actually making this a respectable life, and picking who I squat with carefully.
If I can hold a house long enough, I wish to essentially set up a trustworthy, sustainable 'free house' and using the space for benefit of the community.

Seriously, more than a backpack and i doubt your going to be able to do this. Put your "stuff" in storage and move with a backpack.
Anyways, Mandrake - you never answered my question. I wanted to know the reason why people dont want to be homeless.

In my opinion:
There are multiple varieties of homeless people and multiple personal reasons for their life decisions. One cannot fairly lump all of "them" together.
Let's also not forget that, statistically, many homeless folks have problems with alcohol, drug abuse, and/or mental illness.
The most obvious answer to your question is because we have adapted to certain comforts and amenities which would cause stress and unhappiness when taken away, particularly when the majority of the Western world, by comparison, will pass you by as a polar opposite of your condition.
