I work in a marine biology research lab. Cool, you might say. Think again.
I'm working on some behavioral research with fiddler crabs. This entails sitting behind a blind (so the crabs can't see you) and watching fiddler crabs... all fucking day. It's kind of like watching paint dry, except you have to take notes. And the pay is crap.
To top it off, I probably have more common sense than my boss. Prior to me joining the study she had been using a turkey baster to do water changes. I showed her something that blew her mind... Using a siphon to remove the water. I also suggested using a camera to record the crabs then speeding that up on a video editor. Both instances she seemed amazed. And those are about 2 out of endless examples I could give.
The only reason I haven't quit is because I need the reference for future jobs and graduate schools. Even then this study is flawed in so many ways I can't count them, so the reference may not mean a damn thing. I'm tempted to talk to the senior scientist and tell them how their grant money is being wasted... but that would mean I'm out of a job if they pull the plug on the study.
It has to be the most mind-numbingly boring work I've ever done with absolutely no gratification. Every minute I spend there feels like a minute of my life wasted.
Just about the only thing I enjoy about the job is when we have to go out into the field for more crabs and the fact that my coworkers are pretty cool.
Next time you think your job sucks, imagine sitting in a dark room watching fiddler crabs from behind a curtain for hours on end.
BTW: If you know who I am, please keep it to yourself. I posted here because I don't want to take the off chance that someone from the lab will find this post then look up my post history.

even if the study's flawed, you've done a lot more than would be expected of some random college helper.. just grin and bear it, at least you're not dealing with human excrement or rotting food and harsh chemicals. trust me on this one. plus, like ya said it goes on mr. resume, even if it was bad you still are doing a hell of a job right? it's not *your* experiment or study or whatever, so any flaws with it are the responsibility of the one in charge right? then again, if there's flaws and you can think of a way to repair the flaws of the study and basically reboot the thing, or even better to change it in some way and not have to throw out the old data, just spend a lot of time thinking of a way to broach the subject to your immediate boss. don't come off like "well shit bitch you doin this all wrong", i've found that phrasing things so that you come off as simply not understanding why things are being done the way they are because you would have thought they would be another way instead.. someone phrase that for me better i'm being lazy, but yall get what i mean. don't come off condescending, come off naive and confused, and it might even work out that in the course of explaining it slowly to you so you understand your boss'd get the big lightbulb and notice the same flaws you've noticed.
fact is scientists don't really tend to have a lot of common sense.. for whatever reason. they'll leave the turkey in the oven for precisely the correct amount of time, but forget to turn the damn thing on, yanno?

What level are you at? highschool?
Science is like most fields: You pay your dues. Someone has to do the "grunt work", and that's where you start. Its a weeding out process.
Unfortunately the process continues for a long, long time. If you make it through a B.S., you'll get 5 more years of "grunt work" as a graduate student. If you make it through that, your reward will be 3-5 more of "grunt work" as post doc.
Ask ANY professor in almost any science-related field. Everyone who's made it has been there and done that.
Suck it up young grasshoppper or change fields.

Quite the opposite, I'm a senior bio major. I've worked in my fair share of labs. My last job was under a world renowned neuroscientist. I have seen what working under a professional is like. Right now I'm working under some retard masters student who doesn't know science for shit.
My "lab-bitch" job at the last internship was doing immunohistochemistry, PCR, gel electrophoresis, and immunofluorescence imaging. This job is a joke compared to that.
I've paid my dues. I have experience, don't try to lecture me like some highschool fucktard. It's not a matter of changing fields, it's a matter of finding a "boss" who doesn't suck at what they're doing. And at my current university, I'm stuck working under this idiot. Trust me, if I had any other options for a marine bio job I'd be done with this joke of an internship in a heartbeat.

I spend my winter evenings standing in a bucket on top of a 70-foot boom spraying this carcinogenic and burning hot fluid at high-pressures onto a plane. In the meantime, the wind is blowing water, snow, and this same carcinogenic and burning hot fluid right into my mouth, face, and eyes.
OSHA says you have to wear a face-mask, but there is no way you can do this job with your vision obscured.
It sucks and is fucking stupid as hell. We use the same fluid at school to cool our rock saws and there you have to wear gloves and a respirator. At work I swallow ten gallons of that shit every winter.
I will say that while the job is shit those 5 months, the rest of the year I don't do a fucking thing and get paid relatively handsomely, so it's okay overall.

try getting a real job to pay for college. something dirty, minimum wage, hazardous to your health, demeaning, and ultimately pointless.
I'd recommend prostitution in your case probably.
