Drug vending machines installed in 57 prisons [UK]
    #10687131 - 07/16/09 11:46 AM (3 years, 10 months ago)

Drug vending machines installed in 57 prisons
July 16, 2009 - christian.org.uk

As part of the Government’s ‘harm reduction’ programme, methadone vending machines have been installed in 57 prisons at a cost of £4 million.

The technology will dispense methadone, a heroin substitute, to prisoners who will take it under the supervision of a health professional.

The approach has been criticised by Dominic Grieve, the Shadow Justice Secretary.

He said: “The public will be shocked that Ministers are spending more on methadone vending machines than the entire budget for abstinence based treatments.”

He added: “Getting prisoners clean of drugs is one of the keys to getting them to go straight.”

Mr Grieve continued: “We need to get prisoners off all drug addiction – not substitute one dependency for another. The Government’s approach of trying to ‘manage’ addiction is an admission of failure.”

Methadone-dispensing machines are planned to be eventually installed in half of the 140 prisons in England and Wales.

The machines deliver the drugs to prisoners identified by iris and fingerprint scanning.

In May the Government’s ‘harm reduction’ approach to tackling illegal drug use was dubbed a £10 billion failure.

Kathy Gyngell, of the Centre for Policy Studies, said the approach was trapping people in “state-sponsored addiction”.

In 2008, the Scottish Government said it would drop its harm reduction policy deciding to focus instead on “recovery and helping people live drug-free lives”.

Holyrood estimates that the drug problem costs taxpayers £2.6 billion each year. There are an estimated 22,000 drug abusers on the methadone programme in Scotland.

Professor McKeganey of Glasgow University’s Centre for Drug Misuse Research had attacked the use of methadone in drug treatment.”

He said: “I think far too much [money] is being absorbed by the methadone programme.

He added: “I think we need to refocus where that money is spent. We need to massively increase the availability of residential rehabilitation”.

Isn't Methadone almost as addicting as heroin?
They just want the prisoners addicted to THEIR drugs.

Maybe your right, but bottom line is some people are hardcore heroin addicts, and getting thrown in jail and stopping cold turkey must be sheer hell. Sure some damage may be done, but it will really fucking save allot of guys

I can't say I condone this in the least. If they want to help the heroin addicts by methadone treatments, it needs to be through a clinic, not a snack machine.

I agree with Cona, I think this is a way to get them addicted to their drugs. What's the prerequisites for being a 'heroin addict' in the UK, anyway? Is it based off word or is it based of levels of it in your system?

It just seems faulty
It just seems unsafe
It just seems like they're going to make the problem go on for way longer

Methadone is a far more addictive and powerful drug then most of the things the inmates that are in jail have been jailed for. The logic behind this is not to help heroin/opium addicts, it is to get people to swap to synthetic drugs, which pharmaceutical companies control the monopoly for.

I wouldnt be a bit surprised if the U.S. follows in suit. I sure would have a better time in prison with 10-40mg of liquid methadone a day, BUT at the same time, it will get people dependant. They simply want to profit from the problem, as usual. Nothing new here.

This is ridiculous. The way I see it, this has the possibilty of creating much more crime. If addicts can't get their shit out on the street all they have to do is commit a crime because now they know they can go to prison and get potent drugs and a place to stay for FREE..

prison would be SOO much easier with a shot of methadone each day, lol.  the main side effect of methadone is to sit around and not give a fuck about anything...perfect if ya got nothing to do and just sit all day.

Actually it can't.

The point of this is to attack the drug problem in prison by fucking up the trade. Drugs in prison are extremely easy to get and extremely profitable. If people start taking methadone it's really going to fuck with the number one most profitable and abused drug in the UK in the prison system. Heroin.

So, that being said if they stopped locking those people up in the fucking first place there wouldn't be so many fucking issues with shit like this.

Running a taper/maintenance program in prison is a fucking joke. The cost, time, and resources it would take is unreasonable for their budget (clearly), so they try the next best thing. Trust me, this could be going to much worse things than methadone maintenance in prison system.

An admission of failure should have been made 10 years ago. Are we seeing trends change? Has the rate of drug use declined? Has the drug war eased in Mexico?

I didn't think so, that sounds like a pretty fuckin big failure to me.

I'm surprised no one else brought this point up: the prisoners themselves who are now drugged up on methadone will be much easier to deal with and handle, they probably won't cause trouble, make a lot of noise, hassle the guards or become violent. I think this is also a control scheme to subdue prisoners...and, as cona brought up, they want those prisoners addicted to their drugs so the pharma companies can reap all the profits. What a sick and twisted way of approaching things: they jail the heroin users because the government makes no money off black market heroin sales, so they give them a different opiate and say its okay to take that one, but not heroin. If they're giving them free opiates, then why the hell should those guys be in prison in the first place? I can understand if they robbed someone or a store, then it would make sense. But undoubtedly a lot of those guys are in there solely for the possession of heroin. Now that they are in possession of another opiate, it just makes no sense why they were sent to jail in the first place. Fucking hypocrisy is what it is.

All very good points but I have to say that Methadone has helped me immensely. It is definitely not for every dope addict and suboxone can be used if you can afford it or have insurance but the reality is that methadone does work for people that have had a seriously hard time staying off dope. I know that jail would be a hell of a lot easier if I could get my dose everyday. What they should do is anyone who is serving over 6 months (and has had a history of opioid addiction), put them on a blind/slow methadone detox. Like a mg or 2 a week and you wouldn't even notice it until you got down below 10 mg's in which case they could slow it up even more and drop like a mg every 2 weeks till you're clean. No W/D,

Yes they can, I have lost 2 friends to this, they both had seizures in jail because they were not allowed anything to help them with their WD's.

I was a heroin addict for 5 years, when I tried to quit I had seizures that almost killed me, I would have one then stop breathing, thank god for my wife being there to save me.

Its the amount of stress it can put on your body, and the purity of the dope.

Benzo WD's can kill you too, I have seen this as well.
