    If you give him the truth, you can teach him that there is a time and a place for everything, that there is a difference between marijuana and drugs that are simply harmful for you, such as cigarettes, crack, cocaine, heroin, OTCs and prescriptions that are abused, etc. You can teach him that while marijuana is not bad, it is not to be abused either, provided you have an accurate view of what abuse really is.
  You can teach him that his friends and others are going to be misinformed, and immature, and to be careful to avoid their bad habits that will negatively influence him.
  Children are more perceptive than parents realize. They often know when their parents are being stupid in one way or another.
  If you have respect for yourself, you will treat your child with respect. He will perceive that when you actually do get really upset about something, there is a very good reason. He will grow to not want to disappoint you, not out of fear, but because he does not want to disappoint the person he looks up to the most.
  And that is why he will believe you when you tell him there are times when marijuana is NOT a good idea, such as when he has homework to do, and hopefully you will have provided him with a very good reason as to WHY he should do his homework, not that he should simply do it because he is told so.
  Also, if you have the correct attitude about marijuana, he won't have to hang out with the wrong crowd, because IF HE SO CHOOSES to use marijuana, he can do so in a SAFE environment.
  I know several parents who smoke marijuana and have educated their children on it. And what do you know? they aren't even interested in smoking marijuana. They understand that it is not bad, but also decide for themselves that SMOKING in itself is bad, and say things like "If I were ever going to use marijuana, I would eat it instead of smoke it, because smoking is bad." These are kids that are 10-12 years old. Very good and respectful kids that don't act out. I swear upon my life and all that is sacred in this world that this is true.
  If you want your child to not become a substance abuser, give him the truth, the WHOLE truth, the real pros and cons of the things in the world around him. If you are a good parent he will make the right decision on his own based on the facts, without the need for tyranny. If he one day discovers you have been feeding him lies the whole time, he will lose vast amounts of respect for you. Respect yourself enough to be a good role model, respect the child to gain his respect, and keep it.  On the other hand, discipline him with fear or disrespect, and you have lost.
  Personally marijuana has increased my appreciation for my family. When I am under the influence I find it much harder to be selfish, I am more giving, selfless, and understand all too well the importance of having a good relationship with your family, no matter how rude or lost some of them might be. Exuding positivity at all times is the only way to win over evil, and it really does work. People will decide for themselves that it is much richer to be respectful of life, themselves, and family.
    For me personally, marijuana was a spiritual awakening, and I have ALWAYS been against substance abuse, because I have seen its negativity for myself. Marijuana has brought me much closer to "Christ Consciousness" than I would ever have been without it, but being that that is something personal, and that marijuana is definitely not for everybody, I don't force anything upon anybody. I may provide information, and my own experiences, but I do not force anything upon anybody.
  And that is what you want to say no to?
