Cool stuff!
I tried a smallish bucket of my own (just one quart) and it's now pinning nicely. I really like this technique, it's tidier than plastic bags. One thing I'm uneasy about though is the risk of contams going on unnoticed for a long time. How do you handle (or plan to handle) that?

Thanks for the compliment Neo. So far I have not had any problems with contams until the buckets have flushed a few times and I have moved them outside. Maybe its dumb luck or maybe it is just the aggressive nature of oyster mushrooms. Probably a bit of both.

I use a hydrofogger on a cycle timer. I have it sitting right in front of the blower that provides FAE. It will keep the RH pegged at 98% even while constantly moving massive amounts of fresh air through the the room. You have to stay on top of ambient conditions outside and make adjustments accordingly or you can easily waterlog the mushrooms. Once I get myself caught up I am going to shell out the 2 bills to get a controller to do this for me.

I have tried buckets with holes that range from 1/4" to 3/4". They all work but I went with 5/8" for most of my buckets. It was that or 1/2" and at the time my 5/8" spade bit was sharper and drilled holes more efficiently so that is what I went with.

Where did you get the spawn? Sounds like you got some damn good yields. The 4 foot 8 inch diameter bags in my sig only yielded 3lbs each, 1st flush.

I get my spawn from Amycel. It is a warm weather strain that does well in the Texas heat. I averaged right at 2.25#/bucket and had some buckets that were over 3#. I think that had my filter not clogged mid-flush it could have been 2.5#-3#/bucket average. I have another batch of 24 buckets that will be ready to go into the grow room on Friday. Hopefully I can repeat or improve on these results.

From what I remember, they sell in 40lb bags, correct? Is it a problem ordering like one at a time, or do they want big orders? Also, how much did it cost you? From what I read in this post and Cryogenicz's posts, this stuff easily outperforms the other strains, and i would like to try it.

They sell me one case(2-20#bags) at a time and it costs me $42. Most of their customers order pallets at a time so I imagine they have a nice chuckle when I call for a case. I live 150 miles from where it is made so I make the journey to pick it up so I don't have to worry about it getting compromised somehow in shipping. Many times I can arrange it so I can ride with a buddy whose job has him calling on accounts near there. Costs me $0 for gas and I get to spend a day with my bud.

Sorry for the barrage of questions, but this is a very impressive grow. (most oyster grows are boring) How much profit are you making, and what price are you charging? Are you located close to a large city? I imagine the most I could sell here is about 20-30 lbs/week in a town of 45,000.

Thanks lots faffle. I'm in Austin and the chefs here don't often see quality oysters coming in from their suppliers so when they get mine the same day they were picked they do back flips. I had no problem moving all of this flush for $11/#, $10/# if the took 10# or more. All buyers asked when there would be more. I'm lucky that Austin still has a little hippie vibe and the chefs like to use and promote local growers even if they are more expensive than others. Texans do love things that come from Texas, the greatest country on the planet. A brother has got to get busy!
As far as profit goes, I have not worked that all out yet but I estimate it costs somewhere around $5/bucket to make and fruit them not including labor obviously. I'm at least going to go for one more flush and possibly two so will know better after that. If I can repeat this it appears that it can be a profitable venture. Like I said, a brother has got to get busy!

How many flushes are you getting off these straw buckets? What do you do between flushes for prep.... any kind of dunking or anything?

When you figure profit, and costs, you HAVE to include labor in your products as a cost. If you paid someone to make the products, you would still need to make a profit. A lot of small companies either never get anywhere or they go out of business because they do not factor labor into the cost of their products. You can't always do everything in your business, and eventually you will have to hire someone, if you want your business to get bigger, this is a good example as to why you have to include labor.

I do agree with this, but when it is a home business you must also consider the benefits it brings and the costs you don't incur that you would if you had a slavery job for someone else.
You don't need bus fare or gas money to get to work.
You don't need special clothes or anything that needs dry cleaning.
Your car insurance and maintenance expenses may be less.
You can write off a portion of your household heat, rent or mortgage, and maintenance expenses.
You may save money that you would spend on childcare.
You have an opportunity to put a few dollars quietly in your pocket.
Your boss may be an asshole....but he's one you would have to put up with in any case.
You may be doing what you love, and this can't help but have a positive effect on your health.
You may have time to spend with your kids and an opportunity to participate in raising them.
I do think the hard figures are important in assessing a business, but when it comes to a vocation there are a lot of "soft facts" that can be equally important.
My two cents,
Jef

I am super interested in bulk in buckets. Any further news to what happened with all of these. 70 buckets at 2 lbs a flush is an insane amount of mushrooms. Any complications as a result?
