Oyster Bucket Pin Porn UPDATE 5/8/9

Thought I'd share some pics of my latest crop. This is one of 30 buckets that are starting to pin. They were inoculated on 4/22-4/24. The substrate is wheat straw w/ 10%-20% dried banana leaves spawned with +-2.5 cups of commercial spawn/bucket. I added some lime to the hot water bath during pasteurization. A couple of these started to pin at 13 days.
I'll update this post with pics and weights as it goes along. Hope you enjoy.

Here are a couple more pics. I had a little hiccup with my FAE and choked them out a bit. The filter on my blower got damp with air that I was trying to recirculate and was restricting air flow. I knew something was up because buckets stopped pinning and the ones that had already pinned were not growing properly. I change filters and ducted the recirc air to the outside and am already starting to see some new pins and the mushrooms are looking better.
I am now moving the maximum amount of air I can with the equipment I have and it looks like 40 buckets fruiting at once may be pushing the limits for my space.

Picked 2 buckets this evening for a total of 5#. The pin pic bucket yielded 3#. I think this could have been better without my dirty filter snafu and the near 100 degree heat w/70%-80%RH. Even with my A/C running full blast the grow room gradually rose to 77 degrees before the sun started to set and temps began to slowly drop. The temp in the room will drop to 69 deg by morning. These babies grow very fast when it is warm but they are certainly not as meaty as when they fruit below 70 deg. The chefs still love them and use them up quite rapidly so shelf life is not a real issue.

The buckets are in an 10 x 12 Morgan building with a florescent fixture. I have to pull buckets out to photo as my cam sucks and only works plugged in to elec. It is a strain of Pleurotus pulmonarius.

Nice!!
Are you just stuffing the straw straight into the buckets? Or do you have a bag or liner of somekind in the buckets and then cutting slits in the bag (through the holes) after colonization?

I use a trash can liner in the bucket and poke holes at the time of inoculation. I let some go 12 hrs or so before poking holes and the took off fine, but some I let go over 20 hrs really put a damper on growth. The buckets have rebounded and we'll see about yields. Its seems best to poke holes immediately to get the mycelium of and running at a rapid pace.

Edited with a pick of the first harvest from this crop. These buckets went 16 days from inoculation to harvest. I'll have a bunch to pick tomorrow. Yippeee!!!

Those look delicious!! Do you pick them before they drop spores? I'd imagine it would be quite a mess if they did

Thanks ABC! I try to pick before they drop spores but with the amount of air I move trough my room the spores seem to get flushed out even if I let the mushrooms go long enough to sporulate.

Thanks lots Houdinihar! Yes MycoAu, Those are Hericium in the jars. Good eye! As a matter of fact that Hericium culture came from Houdinihar in a trade.
Just picked some more buckets. I have gotten about 30# from the first 12 buckets. Sold 5# at convenience store in my neighborhood and am going to deliver 20# to a couple of restaurants. I love it when my mushrooms hit diners plates within hours of being picked.

Hericium growing on a mix of fresh oak chips, cottonwood sawdust, wheat bran, and gypsum.
The last of the 1st thirty buckets will be finishing up today. Its looking like the 1st flush total for all is going to be around 60# or 2#/bucket. This is by far my best single flush to date and I am quite pleased with the results. I do, however, feel confident that with some tweaking and more practice I can get to 3#+/bucket on the 1st flush.
I'm off to peddle some mushrooms now and then try to figure out my 2nd flush strategy and how I'm going to rotate the next 40 buckets into the mix.
