I liked the game play of Final Fantasy Tactics better, but the materia system and story line were amazing in FFVII.

Gameplay is important to me, but the story and characters are always the defining factor. I never got a chance to play Tactics all that long though.

FFVII is possibly one of the best games ever made. Cloud and Barret were my two favorite characters, o and chocabo's. I havent played the game in more than 5 years and those characters and certain scenes from this game stuck with me. Like the arcade

I couldn't beat sephiroth, I tried so hard so many times until I was pissed enough to stop playing the game. A year later, I pulled out the game to show a friend the final boss because he never got that far, and I beat the fucker on the first try. I didn't know whether to be pissed or just happy that I finally saw the ending.

lol this just happened to me with killzone 2 on hard, the last boss I gave up on because it's REDICULOUS. 2 weeks later I pop it in and try first try and win. It was all luck and how the AI works out...

I had trouble at first, but on a recent playthrough (1-2 years ago) I leveled up to maximum capacity and toasted him in a turn or two.

Wow, I totally forgot Cactaur is my avatar. Awesome haha
I wouldn't even know where to begin on playing the PC version through a torrent. I'd need power ISO I guess?
But yeah, I finished playing FFVII and FFVIII in French on my PSP a few years ago and I got so good at it I was able to think in the language! No joke! My French is still not that bad because of it. I was immersed.

FFVII was good all around, but I'll have to agree tactics had better gameplay. I must have played through tactics at least five or six times, I can't say the same for the other FFs.

I found sephiroth quite easy, guess you never challenged ruby or emerald weapon in hopes of actually beating them...I've read it is possible, but its not, its all lies.

I never liked to whole turned based random encounters every five steps aspect of FF games, but FF7s setting, music and story always stuck in my head; ideas like a planetary overmind with a lifestream that connects all creatures to it. I remember talking to a friend on LSD about how each individual is inseparable from the whole, like a window that the universe can view itself from, and he goes "oh, like the lifestream in FF7." Haha, pretty good as far as video game stories go.

Best game in history.
I ended up with over 500 hours of gameplay.
All Characters max leveled with all Lvl 4 limits All materias in maestro (an all in maestro was worth a fucking fortune, I used to fight in Mideel for hours just to level them up and sell) A stable full of golden chocobos All the moves on the Enemy skill materia All the side quests Bought the house etc
It just gave me hours upon hours of fun.
Then I went and lost the memory card with my savegame

The bitch of the whole thing is you get a gold chocobo when you beat him......a useless weak one at that. I guess beating him was just something to brag about. Equipping a ribbon (immune to all status changing effects) to each characters makes it a lot easier. Use knights of the round and mimic it over and over. This has got me wanting to play it right now!

I took piano lessons last year and learned the song that plays during that part (called "Interrupted by Fireworks") on piano. Lol

I got my GF (concert harpsichordist) to play Aeris' Theme for me the other day. She tought I was geeky as hell but she nailed it first time without ever having heard the song (impressing the hell out of me in the process).
It brought back great memories though

I'm so playing this game again once I get Windows 7 installed on my PC so I can run the game in XP mode. I wonder if they've released any more graphical mods to the game that smooth out the polygons. We all know a remake isn't coming any time soon so any improvement over the PSX version is welcome. I'd also need the soundtrack mod because I refuse to play through the game in MIDI.

I'm so glad that there are other people that feel the same way about that game that I do! It really is like a love relationship, the feelings that game stirs. I'm a little afraid of a remake though. I just feel they'll rape it. Change the music and game play, stuff like that. I think the old girl if perfect the way she is. Unless they can get over the temptation to soup it up for new generation.

I always hoped they would issue an exact remake, except for being able to revive Aeris like you can in the japanese version.
It would suck if they changed anything else! Especially the music. Or the beautiful backgrounds (one that stands out in my memory is the mountain with the tracks you can jump from and to, and all the materia... forget what it's called)

Fuck I LOVE FFVII. And Nobuo's music too.
To answer to a question : the game is named "Final Fantasy", because it was released as what was supposed to be the last game of Square (money problems); it was their last fantasy. However, its success allowed them to keep on going.
Personally, I don't know about a remake... some things about this game are like that because of the shitty half-3D graphics. Think about it, what would be the scene at the HoneyBee Inn? The whole game would have a much serious tone. Dunno, the story is enough to me, it's beautiful and it's better that way. Especially since Square is Square Enix and is making more and more shitty games (I mean, Dirge of Cerberus, with Gackt, a singer, in it? What the fuck? They just want to pump yens out of that game).

It's about time somebody made a FFVII Appreciation Thread! One of the greatest RPGs ever made IMO! It's right at the top of my list with Chrono Trigger.
FFX is the most overhyped out of all the FF's! I played pretty damned far, waiting for it to get better. It never did. I didn't even bother with XII...but I am rather excited for XIII. We'll see what happens.
I never beat FFVIII, and I remember it being good, but they really made a mistake letting the enemies level with Squall.
Everybody keeps telling me that I need to give FFIX another go but, there's something about the battle system that drives me insane! It's like it lags...or it's bogged down or something. Not pretty to watch at all.
Lately I've been trying to get into Breath of Fire III.

I beat FFVII a LOT of times lol it's one of my favorite games. I've maxed out all the characters, their materias, gotten master materias/summons, gold chocobos, KOTR, ultimate weapons, whateverz in da game I've done it pretty much... except beating the damn arm wrestling game in the Gold Saucer
I also love FFVIII and FFXI

QFT, i feel so elite about this that i'd be even upset if they upgraded the music too much lol. If they dared to butcher this game in a remake i'd wouldn't buy from square enix again, simple as.
...unless they came up with most epic, badass game of the century type thing...
(also, i'm not sure about the chances of them actually remaking this game :\ )

Yeah the music is what it is, I'd be pissed if they changed a single note. The only thing I care about is a graphical upgrade. If they add extras (which I don't want) they better show up after beating the game to 100% completion.

Spoilers to those who didn't complete FFX!
FFX was pretty interesting. Tho whole thing about Tidus being a summoned dream... I liked it. Especially when he says "this is my story", it has no particular sense in the beginning but towards the end, you see that it really is a story, and once the story is over, Zanarkand fades aways...
Fixed, sorry.

To each their own bro! You like what you like. I feel that FFVII had a deeper emotional impact...but that's my opinion.
And speaking of FFVII, has anybody else watched Advent Children Complete on Blu-Ray yet? ACC on Blu-Ray makes me go:

It's also great on mushrooms...best trip I've had yet. ^_^

Have you seen the newer spinoff? Denzel: On the Way to a Smile? It shows the meteor coming down from Denzel's point of view, and it's really fuckin cool to watch! It shows when the first signs of geostigma start and it shows how Denzel meets up with the FF7 crew.

I'm trying to dig one up. It really stirred up a bunch of memories watching. You see the Sector 7 plate come crashing down and all. They're going to release the series in sections, each character having their own. Barret, Yuffie, Tifa, etc..

who is Denzel? I don't remember a character in FFVII named Denzel, but it's been so long I could have forgotten. I'm assuming it's a character from an anime?

He's in Advent Children. Didn't really care for his character in that production but after seeing this short it's neat to watch how he ties the stories together.

Chrono Trigger deserves a remake too. There would have been a fanmade one but Square Enix shut it down because they're fucking bastards. From what I heard, the team actually finished the remake completely for themselves after it was shut down...they just can't release it. I keep hoping it'll mysteriously pop up somewhere someday but...wishful thinking I suppose.
It was going to be a non-profit release too. They had no reason to shut it down. It looked pretty impressive too. Very impressive.
Google "Chrono Trigger Ressurection" to see the cease and desist letter from Square...and to check out some game footage.

I didn't like Advent Children. It sucked.
It was like, "hey FFVII is over" then "oh wait... I see $$$ there... hey guys, look, look Sephiroth is not dead, pretty graphic designs!" I just considered it fanboy masturbatory material.

I liked it but i see where you're coming from it seemed like they just dragged the story out a bit much there for the monies. Bit pointless but pretty good nontheless

They also made it a lot simpler so 11 years old could have a complete understanding of the plot.

Just to think that this image is a key show a bit of the game's complexity!

crono cross, need to plAY TOOOOOO *zombie* such a good game that i didn't play into enough to see it's glory.
NES, SNES, N64, and old school playstation still rocks and the only good new games or designed for individual imaginations, like genres... don't care for simulation... where is the stories of todays games? GOD OF WAR... like one game out a shiste load that has the old school flavor. XBOX generation is boring... and GTA 4 is snoooorible... except for the design of everyhitn... yaya great game engine... i'm sure if you don't mind the occasions break in fun trying to deal with dating some chick you'd rather just run over it's fun all the way throug believe me... but... GTA 3 is waaa... aaaayyyy better.

Wasn't Chrono Cross a half ass remake of Chrono Trigger? I thought I read somewhere it was made in the "spirit" of Chrono Trigger.

Just brings back the memories of my time in Junon. Scenes like that could defiantly do with a graphical update.

Hell no. It doesn't even make more than a reference or two to the first one. It's really a lot of fun to play. You fall in love with the characters and especially the music. It has TREMENDOUS replay value too as you can literally fast forward the game's time and blow right through it and view dozens of different endings.

I really loved Advent Children...it has some cool philosophical ideas...at least for me personally it inspires cool thoughts and feelings. I certainly wouldn't say there's no point to it. The only thing I didn't care for was the dragonball z-like fights, but I can tolerate them for the what else is there.

The collection of FFVII web novels I was referring to can be read HERE
Denzel's has already been animated, the rest should be out eventually...
Quote:
On a Way to a Smile is a collection of seven short stories written by Kazushige Nojima the scenario writer for the RPG Final Fantasy VII and its spin-off movie Advent Children. Each story takes a look at how the characters have been doing in the two year gap between the end of the original FFVII story and the beginning of the movie Advent Children. The collection started off on the internet where the very first story Case of Denzel was initially split into four chapters, the first being published onto the official Japanese FFVII: Advent Children website on September 5th 2005, a week before the release of the long anticipated CG movie. Over the two weeks that followed up until the movie's release, the remaining chapters were also uploaded.

advent children is awesome to watch really stoned
I played ff7 before I smoked weed...it is a goal of mine to play through that game really stoned (the entire game, even if i have to take a tolerance break)... I've been 1) letting it fade from my memory as best I can...it's situations like this where it sucks having really good memory 2) waiting on the possibility of a remake...some say it wont happen, but the producer i think, said he would like to do it if he could get the whole original team to work on the remake...that would be awesome...he says the latest projects like ffxiii are what is being focused on, some say it will never happen, but who knows

Well, Advent Children had pretty much nothing to do there. Final Fantasy VII was a story in its whole. There even was a video with Nanaki at the end of the credits where you could see an abandoned Midgar, in a "the end" way.
I mean, wtf, they put three emo guys, an "unknown person", a resurrected Sephiroth, a virus, and the story is back on tracks? No it's not. The original was beautiful, it had a powerful story and a rich backround which left many questions unanswered. It had a particular feeling, it was older in the way that there was less hype around it. A few fancy haircuts left aside, many things were left as simple, and darker. You could visit a brothel in the slums and such.
Advent Children was made for fanboys. Why? It's pretty, everything is "badass", you have some nice matrix slo-mo action, you have a comeback of many characters, even Rufus and Sephiroth are there just to make everything even more badass.
Do you get my point? Ok, it's cool but it's empty. It's like making a Lord of the Rings II : Frodo's comeback, where a Frodo whith dark glasses and superpowers would come back to kill a badass Sauron. Saruman's back too; in fact, everyone is back in one epic battle. At the end of this battle, everything goes back to normal and I think, damn that was quite useless. Square Enix is just raping the shit out of the original story with all those games and movies and whatever. I'll just stick to the original story, if they want to make it a tale where popstars fight other popstars, fine...

Exactly! I watched AC one time and wish I could scrape it out of my scull. I've never played the spin-off games and never will. I would cry my ass off if they raped Lord of the Rings! I cried when Gandolf fell.....yeah I'm a puss.....so SUE ME!

by the way, it's MUCH better to watch Advent Children with the original japanese dialogue. Especially that little girl at the beginning...much more impactful with the japanese girl talking about the lifestream and whatever. That movie was not completely empty, it had some cool eastern-philosophy type stuff throughout, if you can ignore the over-the-top fight scenes...I guess you could say the average anime has that too but I still enjoyed it very much. It definitely pwned spirits within, but you still can't expect it to please everybody. Squaresoft may seem to be greedy for the $ nowadays but at least they aren't completely ignoring some of the classics. Maybe they butcher some stuff a little but who knows, maybe one day they'll see the $ potential for unbutchering what they butcher, or actually doing some justice to the shit they recycle.
squaresoft has been ownhill ever since merging with enix, but still, it would be better to voice complaints to them, not to people who enjoy bits of what they do

I downloaded the jap version with subtitles. I don't expect much, because as was stated above the original was complete story unto itself. I just want to see some of the old characters rendered in modern day graphics. That will be enough.

Oh don't get me wrong the bizzle, I'm not really annoyed by the people who watch it, but by Square Enix who's pumping yens out of that wonderful story.

Kukaracha said: Well, Advent Children had pretty much nothing to do there.
I must say that Crisis Core was a great spinoff...and the only one I've played. Advent Children might mean more to you if you play it. (I'm assuming you haven't based on your attitude towards the spinoff games and movies lol)
I also disagree with your comment that it's cool but it's empty. Is it as deep as FFVII? Of course not, but you can't shrink a masterpiece like FFVII down to 2 hours and expect it to be as deep. For what Advent Children is, it is done quite well and is rather amazing. And, I do agree that it was made for the fans (no need to lump all the fans in with fanboys...there's a difference), but that's not really a bad thing or a valid argument. What kind of sense would it make to do a spinoff of something and not do it for fans of the original?
I don't understand why you guys are bashing it for being: pretty, "badassed", over-the-top, comeback of characters, etc. What do you want it to be? Poorly animated, lame, boring, no familiar characters? The fights may have been over-the-top but they were each unique in their own way, and did things that had never been done before.
If you genuinely didn't like it overall, that's fine, but don't condemn the qualities it DOES have because you felt it was missing something else.

No, I don't think that being badass is a quality. And when I say "pretty graphics" it's to point out that it can be really nice in the outside, hiding a poor quality inside.
Cartoons for kids are badass. I don't want badass. I want no superpowered heroes, I don't want them to have cool poses, I don't want unlimited explosions. It's ridiculous! I don't want a story to be cool, I want it to be deep and to fill me with emotions. I want weak heroes, I want humanity in them, I want them to fail, I want something simple, no fancy explosions, no poweranger poses.
I don't want to see power and cool stuff and cool fights, I want to see a meaningful journey to have beautiful dreams myself. Something that makes me wonder, like a wonderful painting, and not something that excites me like a badass movie or a porn movie. If I want to be excited, I'll watch porn or Pulp Fiction or 300... but in the case of FFVII, it's not really what I expect. Everything comes down to what I expect from the original game actually.
Now, what I don't like about the spinoffs, as I already mentioned it, is that the game was a whole already. I don't see the point of any spinoffs, especially in the future of FFVII, except making money out of hungry fans.

Apparently there are a lot of patches out now for the PC version that replace the character models with upgraded Advent Children style ones, even in gameplay. I just might download this game, mod it up, and play with improved graphics and music. Shit, it's exactly what I'm looking for, why wait for a remake?

Have you even played the original game? I'm beginning to wonder...it sounds as if you would despise everything about the game except the storyline.
But, to each their own I suppose. We'll just have to agree to disagree.
There are plenty of other people that enjoy Advent Children with me.
I just have to ask one question though...why can't something be badassed, cool, deep, and emotional at the same time?

I still play it every now and then, it's the only PS1 game I kept along with Alundra so, yeah, I played the original story.
I mean, for example, Sephiroth is real badass, right? (Spoilers if you haven't finished the game)
Well, knowing he's stuck in the river of life since the Nibelheim incident, the Sephiroth we see is just the shapeshifting Jenova walking around under Sephiroth's form, while the real Sephiroth only summons the meteor, being fooled by Jenova into thinking she's her mother, while the mother is Lucrecia and the father Hojo. So, in the end, the character of Sephiroth is pretty pathetic, isn't he? And the main theme of the game is ecology, how is ecology a badass thing? No, the game had some "badass" parts but they were well dosed.
I don't mind something being cool as long as it isn't too much, and from what I've seen people cross the line most of the time. You can't have a normal fight, no, there has to be stylish poses and ennemies coming one after another with a nice choregraphy and a mysterious look on the hero's face. I'm sorry but I can't get emotional with such scenes, I just get the feeling that they ruined it by adding some poweranger content. I'm not into it anymore, I start seeing how ridiculous is that thing, and how exaggerated is that one, and so on. It ruins it for me.
An illustration could be... "Pirates of the caribbean"! Did you watch it? Did you see some random dude and his lady kill dozens of trained pirates while they fight over some random thing, insulting each other as they beat the crap out of everyone? That's the kind of thing I hate. It just makes me wish so bad thet both get shot in the back so things seem a bit more logical.

I can see where you're coming from, but at the same time, I feel the same way about your points as you do about the coolness factor. You're taking it too far. You strike me as one of those people that nitpick a movie to death because it's unrealistic or could never happen in real life.
Or maybe I just loathe your choices of Advent Children and Pirates of the Caribbean as examples of the point you're trying to make lol.
It's all good though. Like I said bro, to each their own.

Ah, had planned to awhile back, but as usual the trip could not be held down by any sort of planning. Would definitely love to see it on some LSD sometime. Still have not had the opportunity to have a trip where I could just do whatever. Cannot wait until I have my own living space.

I never beat FFVII. It's like one of my life goals haha. But it takes time and dedication. I always got caught at certain points. Nevertheless it left a deep emotional attachment and nostalgia. FFX was kinda amazing at first when it came out with those graphics that were state of the art at the time. I never finished that one either. I guess I have a habit of starting things I don't finish eh?

Sounds like me. I beat FF VII and VIII and did everything there was to do on both of them. IX was goofy to me and X I just couldn't get into it to beat. I have to fall in love with the characters to follow it through to the end. FF VII and VIII held me by the balls to the very end!

I think VII and VIII are definitely awesome, but I would go as far to say that X blows VIII out of the water. And I love VIII man, that game is probably #3, I just don't think it stands up to VII and X, which to me are on even ground.
And IX....yeah that game is all right too, but definitely not as good as the others. My least favorite other than XII, which also sucked.

Well I'm not that picky with everything, just some things that I consider as masterpieces like FF VII. I just don't like it when people touch them.
And yeah Florida you should take the time to finish them, it's worth it! One hard thing considering FFX were the side quests. They were interesting but some were just so hard, like the purgatory aeons.
Also, ever heard of the remix of FFVII music, Voices of the Lifestream? Here's one of the songs.
