The TRIPPY games list!!
#10057863 - 03/28/09 02:54 AM (4 years, 2 months ago) |
|
|
This thread is dedicated to games that will TRIP YOU OUT while high.
The list will be updated regularly, so check every once in a while to see if any new trip-a-licious games have been added!
CONSOLE:
F-Zero X (Nintendo 64)
A very nice racing game for anybody who loves fast paced gaming, expect to travel at speeds over 1000km/h! With a vast array of tracks, modes and sound tracks, tons of unlockables, plus some rather trippy colors and patterns, you will quickly find yourself hypnotized by this hyper speed classic! TO PLAY THIS GAME: Either find it used/new at some game store/website, or download the ROM and play it with the Project64 emulator (I won't tell where to download ROMs for legal reasons).
Mario Kart 64 (Nintendo 64)
A legendary game, known for its great racing and battle modes. Lots of high speed, colorful mayhem, and nothing beats racing at top speed on Rainbow Road! In general, most Mario Kart games are trippy, but this one is a must for anyone who loves great N64 games! TO PLAY THIS GAME: Either find it used/new at some game store/website, or download the ROM and play it with the Project64 emulator (I won't tell where to download ROMs for legal reasons).
Super Mario Galaxy (Nintendo Wii)
Mario games have always had some sort of trippyness to them, but if you want a truly trippy Mario game, then look no further! Super Mario Galaxy is like Mario 64 on acid! Tons of colorful, beautifully animated levels show off the best graphics of any Wii game, and the game physics are phenomenal. Walk upside down, float in space, just do anything that is simply out of this world. Mario Galaxy is easily one of the best Mario games ever made, and one of the best games of all time, period.
Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved 2 (Xbox Live Arcade)
Yes, this IS a video game. It's a grid shoot-em-up of the psychedelic kind. You're a lone ship surviving an onslaught of dozens, hundreds and thousands of enemy abstract shapes who try relentlessly to blow you to pieces. This game is easily one of the best games available for XBLA, and is one of the best in its genre as well. Shoot-em-ups (or "shmups" for short) are a very diverse genre, with many variations and styles, but this game easily ranks among the best of them, and provides tons of challenge, fun and TRIP-OUT factor. Yep, colors and trippy effects make up 90% of this game, guaranteeing that GWRE2 is a perfect companion for anyone with an Xbox 360 who wants a head soaring experience. So if you ever decide to add something to your collection on XBLA, GWRE2 should be your first choice!
We Love Katamari (Playstation 2)
The whole Katamari series is great, but this game is probably the best of them. The gameplay revolves around controlling an ever-growing ball of matter, collecting material while fulfilling certain obj]ectives. There isn't too much to write about this game, as it's another one of those "play to know" type of games. But this game is quite unique, and the bizarreness of it all makes it quite an interesting experience. That and that the graphics and sound being quite trippy as well. So if you get the chance, pick up and play We Love Katamari for a different type of challenge!
Razes Hell (Xbox)
If you want a trippy and colorful game with a violent and bloody side, then this game is for you! Razes Hell is all about stopping the evil/cute Kewletts from wiping out all the ugliness in the world, and replacing it with total beauty and.. *shudders*... cuteness! A hilarious yet great game for the Xbox, play it for a colorful, funny and gory experience!
PC:
Typhoon 2001
If anyone remembers that old school arcade shooter Tempest, then this game will bring back memories, with a big enhancement. For one, this game has 3 different level modes - Classic Tempest, Tempest 2000, and the new Typhoon 2001 levels, so you have A LOT to choose from. Second, there are 3 scoring modes - classic, combo and typhoon. And third, the graphics are INCREDIBLE, with an infinite array of colors and animations. Plus the game has a nice upbeat techno soundtrack that fits the non-stop space shooter action so perfectly! Anyone who wants a nice trip should try this game. Just be aware that it has some difficulty to it, and is entirely a skill-based game (like most shmups), so practice is the key to getting anywhere. But with all this game has to offer, and the fact that it's FREE, no one should pass up the opportunity to experience the bliss of Typhoon 2001. DOWNLOAD IT HERE: http://typhoon.kuto.de/
FLASH:
Ski Runner A seriously trippy game, you try to avoid obstacles while collecting pills, all the while suffering a huge battery of colorful hallucinations! This is a must try! PLAY THIS GAME HERE: http://www.arcade-games.ca/view/21366/Ski-Runner.htm
AOOA Some really trippy puzzle/logic game. It gets a bit weird and scary at times, but it's still worth playing at least once. Very unique game ftw. PLAY THIS GAME HERE: http://www.aooa.co.uk
Amanita Design This is actually a web site with various trippy flash games on it. Samrost 1 and 2 are both great games, and The Pantry is eye candy. Good stuff. PLAY THE GAMES HERE: http://www.amanita-design.net/
Psychedelic Science Theatre Trippy games made for those like us. Play any of 6 games to find a clue. Find all six and you win some sort of "reward", I don't know what, but the games are fun. PLAY THE GAMES HERE: http://www.seethru.co.uk/games/pst/index.htm
Psychedelic Shooter A really unusual shoot-em-up, you're a mushroom and kill garden plants, and can also upgrade your mushroom. PLAY THIS GAME HERE: http://www.y8mini.com/psychedelic-shooter
Game Game Game and Game Again Really weird game with some sort of subliminal twist to it. Apparently, this game is meant as some sort of "poem/game/net-artwork" hybrid, whatever that is. Bah, just play the game and experience this oddity first hand. PLAY THIS GAME HERE: http://secrettechnology.com/gamegame/gamegamebegin.html
Boohbah Zone WTF x10. Really bizarre, colorful and tripped out flash game. Man, the creators must've been on acid or something - seems a lot more than "interactive entertainment for kids".. PLAY THIS GAME HERE: http://www.boohbah.com/zone.html
The Office A really strange escape game, check this one out. PLAY THIS GAME HERE: http://www.anodeetcathode.net/games/office/
The House Sequel to "The Office", this is another bizarre escape game. PLAY THIS GAME HERE: http://www.anodeetcathode.net/games/house/
Vector Park A site with a few flash games on it, very trippy stuff. I recommend you play "Park" for a dreamy mind-boggling psychedelic puzzle/logic game. PLAY THE GAMES HERE: http://www.vectorpark.com
The Museum Really eerie game where you explore a museum. Very unusual themes are to be expected. PLAY THIS GAME HERE: http://jogos.hex.com.br/jogo/the-museum/
Psychedelic Game Collection Just a collection of trippy games to play. That "Zoom Quilt" thing is really crazy!! PLAY THE GAMES HERE: http://www.funnylishus.com/category/Psychedelic.html
This is it for now, I will continue to update the list to provide the most variety, challenge and fun possible!
Know a trippy game that is worth mentioning? Go ahead and post it, and I might add it to the list if it's good enough!!
I REQUEST THIS TOPIC TO BE A STICKY. I think this stuff is a MUST for anyone who is on any psychedelic substance, from shrooms to THC to even ecstasy.

It would be helpful if people posted both game titles, and whether they're a console game (and which one), a PC game or a flash game (with link included)!
I will only post the best and trippiest games possible, as I want people to experience the best material available for trippy gaming!

earthbounds awesome. theres a few times you drink a magic tea or eat magic cake and go into a psychadelic background with motivational text running down. Alice always looked nuts when i'd see it in the store but i never played it. This PS2 game clocktower something with this dude that had huge hedge clippers was the trippiest game I ever played, he just walks around slowly with this creepy ass music as you've gotta run and hide somewhere before he finds you. that and this game for sega cd night trap with a sleepover getting invaded by crazy techno vampires....fuckin nuts

Or Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island I have very little recollection because I have bad memory and I was young when I played it, but I remember you could something that would make the sound all fucked up and the screen all wavy. All I remember is loving the shit out of that game.

Not really a trippy game, but did anyone play the first person shooter "The Hunt Begins: Rise of the Triad"?
They have all these powerups, one being a foot with wings (which allowed you to fly) and another one where you could bounce of walls, invincibility, etc...
But anyway, there was this one powerup which was a mushroom, and when you ate it the screen went all psychedelic and wobbly and you couldn't aim your gun properly or anything. When I was younger I didn't get it and always wondered "why would anyone want the mushroom? Why is it doing this?". Now I know

Oh man, I loved the Mickey games on Genesis & SNES
And SMW2: Yoshi's Island was also awesome.
For any 360 gamers out there (maybe the other current consoles too?), there's a sweet collection out now called "Sonic's Ultimate Genesis" or something. Tons of good shit, Vectorman included.

Tetripz was the game someone was looking for. although i cant get it to run on any computers these days.
Rez - played that for like 10min on a dreamcast, id like to play more but how? lol
Geometry wars is on pc as well- great fun listening to trance or something that really drives
audio surf would be fun trippin on the mono ninja mode. I like this game but i kinda hate it because its a music/puzzle game not a music rythm/reflex game. Although its truly awesome how its set up, you can play any song and it will find who else played that song, even has a comment forum for each song, and when you load the lvl and it shows the line graph it will even show you other ppl that are currently riding that song.
also its not really trippy but i sorta miss playin goldeneye 64 multiplayer with paintball mode.

i dont know if youd call it 'trippy' per say. but Mass Effect (for 360 or PC) has some far out scenery, characters (aliens) and animations. and i just demoed both Geo Wars 2 and Rez. and while Rez is alot trippier, Geo Wars is more fun.

and speaking of earthbound, earthbound 3 (the one not released in the US) just got a really well done fan patch, so grab that and a GBA emulator.

This thread should be at the top of the forum!
For all of you PS3 owners out there... you have a whole, downloadable, trippy world at your fingertips. Not to mention you can get them for free if you gameshare. Here are a few of my favourites:
Pixeljunk Eden
Basically, you control a little thing, called a "grimp", and jump/swing around this beautiful 2-D environment with trippy electronic music. The aim is to catch pollen, which fills up pollen catchers, and then you jump on the pollen catchers to make weird and wonderful plants grow, which you can then climb and use to ascend in the level. The aim is to capture "spectra", of which there are five in each level, which then make your "garden" (basically the area at which you choose your level) grow. Wonderful game, all the levels are very varied (so if you don't like the one in the video, there's bound to be one you like), and it's 3 player. Cons are that the levels are timed (but you can constantly replenish that time) and when you catch one spectra, you complete the level, then the next time you must catch two etc. - this means you have to do each level five times, which can get slightly tedious. Be sure to get the expansion.
Flower
In this, you control a single petal. You hold any button on the controller to make a gust of wind blow the petal forward (the triggers and analog sticks allow for varying powers), whilst you control direction using the motion-controlled Sixaxis function. When your petal hits a flower, that flower blooms and another petal follows you, until you have a massive line of petals gusting in the wind. Beautiful visuals, only one player though. Six different levels, including a beautiful daytime scene, one which starts monochrome as you bring colour to the landscape, and one set at nighttime where your petals illuminate the way. On the downside, there are one or two levels where it becomes slightly industrial (twisted mechanical spires and jolting electricity are portrayed negatively, I believe they had some sort of artistic statement about nature and industrialisation), which are less fun and beautiful.
[url= flOw
By the same developers as Flower, this is also controlled via the Sixaxis. Ever played the game Snake? It's a bit like a beautiful, more complex version of that. But still so simplistic. More comparable to the earlier stages of Spore, really. Anyway, you choose a creature (after playing for a certain time with one you unlock another and so on until you have 8 or so I think), and then you simply move around, eating small creatures and avoiding larger ones. Your creature gradually gets larger and more intricate as you go on. The face buttons can be used to active certain mechanisms, for example spinning or a burst of speed. There aren't "levels", it's more one big level: if you eat a red creature, you go deeper where more complex creatures lurk, and likewise blue creatures cause you to ascend so you can beef your creature up on smaller pickings. Up to four players. Only complaint is that your creatures do not get saved, although you can kind of see why. Get expansion. It's debatable whether or not you want to get this if you don't plan on playing it whilst tripping... I do find it relaxing from time to time, however, and worth its price tag.
Noby Noby Boy
The most peculiar one here... I believe it's by the same creators as We <3 Katamari, which someone else mentioned. There is no real objective, you just stretch out this worm thing, eat stuff, shrink, and just wriggle around the environment. It's seriously fun though. Eating caused you to increase in girth, although you can thin yourself if you so desire. Up to four players. The only real "goal" is to stretch your Boy lots, which you then report online and causes this big thing in space to increase in size. As she (called "Girl") extends, she reaches farther from Earth. As she encounters new planets, those environments become playable! It's a crazy idea. I believe we've made our way past Jupiter recently, and the sizes are realistic, so as you can imagine it's a long way to Saturn. Only cons are really that the multiplayer is tacked on (camera only focuses on player one), and some people may not like the lack of objective.
Right, this has taken up more time than expected. They're my favourites, but some other games you might like to consider are: echochrome (fantastic puzzler, one player); Riff: Everyday Shooter (trippy twin-stick shooter, one player); Wipeout HD (futuristic racer, two player, zone (and zone battle) mode especially trippy, get expansion); Super Stardust HD (astronomical twin-stick shooter, two player, get expansion); and finally Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket-Powered Battle-Cars (ignore the name, basically football/soccer... but with cars, extremely fun, four player including splitscreen online, not particularly trippy but still good when under the influence (I often get weird thoughts juxtaposing the ball to a divine figure...)).
Hope this persuades someone! I guarantee with these games in your collection, you shall never be at a loss for things to do whilst tripping, especially with friends (not that it's very common to be at a loss for things to do whilst tripping...). And you don't even have you leave your house to get them! If you know someone who also has a PS3, I recommend gamesharing i.e. one person buys some, the other buys the others, and then you share passwords and downloading from each other's accounts. Good way to save money.
EDIT: Sorry some are imbedded and others not. I intended for none to be. Seems beyond my control though.

Yeah, but you have to complete a level with 50+ coins to get there, and then it won't take long before you've either completed the bonus stage or failed it, with no way to restart.

Ok, how could we leave out Metroid Prime II:Echoes?
Granted the first one is trippy as well, but not nearly as fantastically strange as the Dark Realm with its tentacles, purple swirling skies, pulsating enviornments, arcane architecture and netherworld-like plants that breathe...just like on shrooms.

There isn't an objective...you walk around and if you touch something your world changes. There are random events like once i was walking down a hallway that kept extending as i was walking and finally i got to a room with some guys back to me. He turned around and shot me and the day ended. It's a dream simulator so just expect fucked up thinks...pretty need game to waste a few hours on. Also some days are more nightmarish than others.

Holy shit.
My life would be complete if someone made a game like that with next-generation graphics. I would love to see how developers try and recreate dreams using the vastly improved tools at their advantage.
"After roughly 20 days of gameplay, a new option will appear in the main menu, called "Flashback". This mode is more spontaneous than the regular gameplay. You start out the mode like you would any normal day. It, however, seems to have the capacity to become much stranger. It transports you from the current dream every 10 seconds to another, more unusual dream. It also lasts between 3-5 minutes over the regular mode's 10+ minutes. Some players believe what one sees in flashback mode is what you might eventually see in the actual gameplay as a flashback does not count as a dream."
Cool, ever have your game on long enough to acquire 20 days of gameplay? It's an awful lot.
"The freeware game Yume Nikki (lit. Dream Diary) by Kikiyama features a dream-based storyline similar to LSD. The games also share some ideas (both games feature a road where a car accident has taken place, for example.) Yume Nikki has also been praised for its surreal and disturbing qualities. Other than this, Yume Nikki is a game with stable environments and a few random events, with little more comparison."
Cool, I'm going to go and check that one out.

I think cheats would help us in this situation. There must be codes that move Sonic to bonus lvls immediately.

Sadly, I can't find a cheat code of that nature for it, and there weren't really cheat devices around as far as I know. Maybe in an emulator...
You have reminded me, though, of the (presumably) somewhat trippy gamemode in Sonic 2, the special stage. You can play it two-player and doesn't have any special requisites if you get there from the versus mode.

System Shock 2(PC)

Deus Ex (PC)

Fallout 2 (PC)

And Earthbound is amazing, anyone who has yet to play it should look into it immediately.

I didn't take the time to read the whole thread, but did anyone mention Oblivion for 360? The complexity of the game might make it a tad difficult to play while tripping, but if you get overwhelmed just run around the woods enjoying the scenery and hunting deer with fireballs. Good, wholesome fun.

It has always occurred to me to play this on the PC whilst I'm tripping, but I never really trip alone and so if I'm going to play video games, I generally play multiplayer on the PS3. Either way, especially after some mods if you have it on the PC, I can imagine it would be a fantastic experience (so long as the weather remains good... I hate it when it's overcast, visibility is poor and no matter how many days you wait it just doesn't change).
And, once you get bored of the immersion, just put in a few cheats and rampage the Imperial City, and after the massacre move the bodies into suggestive positions with one another.

I think most video games are "trippy", they are other universes where I get to BE the most relative object/charchter and/or god.
I loved playing around with the Crytek engine, always dream about making a game specifically made for shrooming.

Braid on xbox live arcade is fucking awesome, the soudtrack as well as the art and gameplay are super good. It's also very easy to pick up so it won't cause people tripping to give up instantly.

and Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne.
Quote:
The plot of this game is a complex affair, but the simple version goes like this. In the beginning of the game, the world ends. Seas of fire, everyone dies, the whole bit. The hero is saved from this particular apocalypse, called The Conception, along with two of his friends, by a strange young boy. What follows is a battle not just between Light and Darkness, but among neutral powers, to control the future state of the universe.
Shin Megami Tensei; Nocturne features a non-linear plot which does a very good job of allowing the player to find his or her own path through the game. During the course of the game, the player is given the opportunity to guide the fate of the universe by selecting a Reason, or a set of universal laws by which the world will be governed.
In choosing a path through the game, the story asks some very big, very serious questions of the player - does might make right? Is it better that everyone be unified, or should everyone have absolute control over their own world? How free are you? The answers the player gives to these questions and others like it will determine not just the course of the plot but the state of the world to come, and even has consequences in the greater war between the two major players in the SMT series; YHWH and Satan. Though these two characters represent Light and Dark, the game doesn't instantly typecast them as Good and Evil. Both sides commit some horrific atrocities in the name of their ideals, and the world is full of innocent bystanders. The fate of the humans caught between these powers makes up a great deal of the story, and the best part of it all is that since the player actually has a chance to affect the fate of the characters around them, you really start to care about the people in the Vortex World. Given your choices in the game, innocent lives may be lost, your friends may turn against you, or the entire world may even cease to be.
While no side in the game is depicted as being truly good, God is depicted as being a ruthless, petty despot dedicated to the subjugation of the universe in general and the human race in particular. Satan is portrayed as a noble rebel, albeit one who doesn't particularly notice damage he causes those around him
Liberal copy pasta-ing from a review to properly explain this game...Its an excellent game if you like deep, philosophical trips...or just like to play awesome games. Either way SMT: Nocturne delivers.
-------------------- Men are born for games. Nothing else. Every child knows that play is nobler than work. He knows too that the worth or merit of a game is not inherent in the game itself but rather in the value of that which is put at hazard. Games of chance require a wager to have meaning at all. Games of sport involve the skill and strength of the opponents and the humiliation of defeat and the pride of victory are in themselves sufficient stake because they inhere in the worth of the principals and define them. But trial of chance or trial of worth all games aspire to the condition of war for here that which is wagered swallows up game, player, all. - The Judge
