This prove the title of this thread. Depression isn't a choice or "so called" it is a real thing that, obviously, you have never had. Do you tell a cancer patient "if you want to be well you will be", "if you focus on this so called cancer you will stay there"? :wow:

difference is

effort doesnt kill cancer

I hate people that are fakely over happy, but there is no reason to wallow in depression, just try to have fun or do something that gives life meaning- like making music or some shit......... life isn't too bad. you only live once, if you look back when you die and realize you were bitching your whole life- odds are you will regret it- just be happy , doesn't mean you have to constantly smile like the fucking joker, but just try to appreciate the beauty and absurdity of life...........that alone can make me laugh sometimes

I would say that depression is curable as is cancer. Exercise, diet, psychotherapy can cure depression in less extreme cases. Other cases need medication or electroshock.

It is not a matter of "if you want to be happy you will be". That is the cure for being sad.

There is nothing I can say in a post that will change your mind. I think you have had no experience with depression in yourself or in a person close to you.

I think most of you are missing the point of why he posted this thread.  This depressed guy is in need of someone to talk to bc he has no one to talk to about the way he is feeling.  It sounds like you need confirmation that others are going through this as well.  All those people out there that do not believe in depression, you should not even be expressing your views bc they are wrong, do a little fucking research because this topic is not up for debate.
I have suffered from depression most of my life and psychedelics have helped in the correcting of my brain functions but that is another discussion.
I have also found that every time that I need to make a drastic change in my life like, change schools, move out from my parents, move back in with my parents, break up with a gf, lose a job, break my L5 vertebra and so on.  I would become very depressed when face with one of these choices because I knew that  needed to make a huge change in my life to continue to be happy.
It sounds like you are at one of these crossroads in life and you are not sure what direction to take and it is scary so a way of dealing with being scared is you retreat in your mind and try to figure out how to make a change while still holding on to the life that you know it.
I sugest jumping in without testing the waters and you will come up a different person for the better or worst and that is life the Universe and Everything all boiled into one answer and that answer is

its a matter of

IF YOU TRY TO BE HAPPY YOU WIlL BE

not want.

it takes effort.  so many depressed people are just unaware of the conditions that cause depression in them.

You're fucking dumb! :yesnod:

#1- It might help you to hear that I've been in a similar situation, and am still kind of coming out of it. One thing that has helped me a lot, and still does, is to not give a shit about what others think or say about you if what they're thinking or saying bothers you.

I say try yoga, meditation, and casual psychedelics. SSRI's and social workers won't fucking help you worth a shit. Remember, they're both there to make money.

Stop being a whiny little bitch and do something positive for yourself.

Get a girlfriend. Learn how to play an instrument... I don't know.

I personally believe that depressed people are only that way because they have nothing better to do then sit around and dwell on shit that's happened to them.

We've all got problems. Either deal with it or slit your wrists.

Good fucking post. Everyone here who thinks that depression is a choice is dumb as fuck. It can be caused by a chemical imbalance and in that case it has nothing to do with fucking choice. Alot of you are ignorant swine. Those of you who understand, thanks

Stop jerking off all the time.  Seriously it will help you.

Stop smoking weed all day everyday.

Stop drinking constantly. Only do it when it is in a nice social setting with the friends you might not even have.

Exercise.

Find some passion in SOMETHING.

Get off the fucking internet.  Too much drama, news, and negativity, on top of commercial BS.

Quit TALKING.  TALK IS CHEAP.

Hum.

I know someone who has a chronic depression, nothing wrong in her life, but her brain is deficient.

So yeah... the bullshit... is you.
You take drugs, you should understand that the mood is completely dependent of the brain. If the brain does not work completely fine, you're not happy.
I mean, that girl took meds, did lots of stuff, but she can't help it, she is regularly depressed, wheter she's feeling well or not.

I'd like ignorant people to shut the fuck up, but I might be idealistic here.

As for depressive people... I was born in south america, in a shitty place, been through shitty stuff and all, but I quitted showing contempt towards depressive people when I was around 14. I mean, tolerance.
Some people cry because their girl left them. They could do better and just get over it. I mean there are terrible stuff happening right now, much worse.
But have they lived much worse?

I mean, with that kind of logic, no one here can really complain.
You lost your weed? Shut the fuck up, I have no father!
Your parents are being mean? Shut the fuck up,  I had no home when I was 6 years old!

Do you actually see how that "be tough" logic is flawed?

To the OP:

K, you really need change here. Is there anyone you trust around you, apart from your parent? Can't you go see someone and tell that person "hey bud, I'm not feeling alright"? I would listen to anyone around me who has problems, and I know many people would. Don't be like "oh shit everyone is against me", just be honest about your feelings without blaming anyone else. You might get a little help.
It's also time to be careful with your money. Quit drugs, quit the shroomery maybe too. Taking care of your debt is a priority.
Get into sports. Sports make you forget shitty stuff, sports make you healthier, happier too.
Don't be lazy about your situation, I mean you're probably young. Consider the fact you might live a lot longer. Even if you spent 5 years struggling, what is that in comparison of the 70 or 80 years you could live?
Be friendly to people, they will be likely to be friendly to you.
Avoid your parents.
Start looking for a new job.

The key is being motivated to change.
Plus, your problems won't stay, unlike other people who have cancers or stuff like that; you have the possibility to change.

And don't say people don't understand you, you can't imagine how many people do understand you... you just have to be less ego-centrical. I mean, why would you assume that the others are happy?
Why would you assume that there is "you" and then "the others"?
Why would you assume you are undergoing severe depression?

that was a very enlightening post, 18, thx man.

The big problem is that there are not alot of people that I trust around me. My best friend is going to uni in another city so I hardly ever get to see him. I recently ditched this shithead friend of mine because he was an inconsiderate prick and everyone he knew hated him too, just for some reason he always called me and I never had the heart to say 'no I don't want to chill'.

Anyways thanks to him, I haven't been able to have any interesting friends (for the most part) for the past 6 months or so, and so I just recently have finally been able to meet some cool people without this dick scaring them away completely. He is a long, long story so I am not going to get into the specifics but...

You know, friends rub off on you, and my social sense of right and wrong has become seriously twisted thanks to him.
