A closeup of some nice rhizos.
Do you think I should case now or let it colonise completely first?

I would let it colonize before I cased assuming it even needs a casing, I remember you naming the stuff you used in another thread, do you know of any national chain that carrys it????

That is some very healthy mycelium. Why are you going to case?
the db instructions say not to case. What casing is slither talking about?

Slither: "Westland Traditional Farmyard manure" The place I bought it was called "Dobbies Garden Centre" Dunno if it's a chain or an independent, but, since I'm assuming you don't live in Scotland, that probably doesn't help.
12Blate: It's not a DB kit, just my attempt at emulating one. I've always cased smaller scale efforts, so I feel inclined to case this one. More aesthetically pleasing somehow:)

Sorry if i interrupt with a newbie question but, isn't that casing allready ?
You crumbled the cakes, put a thick compost layer, let them colonize inside the container and gave proper conditions to grow. What i understand is that you have to change those conditions to case. I'm i correct ?
If so wich diferent conditions have to be met ?

Cheers,
MAIA

a casing is a thin layer that you lay over top of your colonized substrate so it isnt directly exposed to air, it gets nuetrients from the casing material, and also provieds more water retention for further flushes. i dont know about his kit, but the db kit compost is soooo moist that it really does make the inside like a mini rain forest like Ryche says. mine constantly has tons of condensation on the sides, and the colonized compost always looks, and smells really moist and healthy because of this.

im sure that your kit will be like this too, and if so then you dont need a casing layer, but if you want to throw one in for kicks, why not? did you put a drain hole in the bottom of your kit, or does it not seem like it needs it as of now?

There doesn't seem to be a need for drainage at this point. The substrate isn't as deep as the DB kit, more like 5-6lbs of manure as opposed to DB's 10. Anyway, I'm not sure if I want dung juice dribbling on my floor:D
My kit comes in violet, orange, green and bondi blue, a la iMac, in order to best suit your particular colour scheme:)

SCOTLAND ROCKS... to a certain extent ;)

My granny lives up there, when I last went to visit her with my mom and sister... I got kinda pissed with my sister and got puke on my "hoody" (hooded fleese). So my granny put it in the wash for me.... really nice of her....

She neglected to take out my MP3 player first. I dont think a wash and tumble dry did it any good as it no longer works :(

I'm also trying a "Poor Mans Dung Brothers Kit" but I thinking of whether to use a casing version (ie its in a terrerium) or to use a bigass plastic storage box.

Whoa! Where my Fingers?

with the drainage hole you make some kind of a plug, so that way it only drains when you want it to by removing the plug and turning the kit to its side.

are you going to be selling these kits?

waaaay nice cdc. in karl's thread on the poor man's dung kit at the donkey, he said he would initiate pinning immediately, and that he was not going to use a casing layer (looks a lot like what youre doing). but the thread was never finished, only got 12 days old :( ...there was someone else who used a completely dark bin around the same time, and let light in daily... i think that was at the donkey too, i cant find it anywhere (to see if they cased, to see when the initiated pinning)! the pink tint on the myc. is from the box, rite? (looks neeeatstreet!)

ps, did anyone happen to archive karls dung kit thread from the donkey? HQ wanted to try it, when she got grain down... kinda wanted a manual to follow (like the og thread read).

If not, run a search and then reply to one of the messages in the thread. It will bump the thread up and then you can read it in the flat format by clicking on it on page 1 of the forum.

Noticed many pins today, so casing is a no-no. I'll post some pics in a bit.

Quite an uneven pinset. Once I pick those "early starters" the flushes should be a bit more uniform.

cdc.. They don't look as thick as some of the other pics I saw. And the DBs didn't have the fuzzy at the bottom of the stipe. I bet it's the auto air-exchange that makes them form so big. Did you put any holes in your container?

Is that pastuerize dung or compost?
