pasteurizing worm castings and coir
    #9970186 - 03/14/09 12:36 PM (15 years, 17 days ago)

I want to try coir as a substrate and it seems a lot of folks don't pasteurize their coir.

I also wanted to add some worm castings for extra N.

Do i need to pasteurize the castings???

I was thinking about making a tea with the castings and using the tea to hydrate the coir.

Any thoughts or advice??

just pasteurize them together.

i read that coir is good for rasing worms in.    anyone ever raise worms in coir, then take them out and pasteurize?  just a thought

I am pretty sure everyone pasteurizes there coir.  They way I do it is that I break the brick up into smaller chunks and place it in a 5 gallon bucket, I then boil a gallon of water on the stove.  Once the water is boiling I take it and pour it over the coir in the 5 gallon bucket and cover it with a lid.  I then let it sit for 2-4 hours until the temp comes down to around 100 degrees or so.

I then add in my spawn cover it up and let it colonize.  This basically pasteurizes your substrate because you pour boiling water 212 degrees over the coir which then brings the water temp down to around 180-190 degrees.  You then maintain a temp of 160 + for at least an hour by covering it with a lid.

my coir recipe

You can modify the recipe to use worm castings instead of the coffee.
