nice find.
Are all the gills whitish or do they become darker in age?

hey nice to see people are excited about these i think the gillsmight look that way because of the picture or something they are a dark purple spore print... i do have more pics but dont have the time to upload them all right now but i will soon.

you might consider sending some specimens to a qualified member to review, such as Workman.
a microscope is probably the only thing here that will decide what mushroom that is.

Those mushrooms are pretty cool! Yeah, your probably gonna need some microscopy to figure out just exactly what those are. I'd also like to see more pics and get a better description of the habitat. Nice finds!

Definitely an active Psilocybe, an amazing and rare find in Michigan!

It looks most like Psilocybe caerulipes to me, but other possibilities are P. silvatica or P. liniformans var. americana.

in the first pic it appears as if there may be universal veil remnants (warts) on the edges of the cap, how odd?

these appear to be immature. pics of the bigger ones would be sweet!

Great shots and find, fetalscab.

Maybe Psilocybe liniformans var. americana.  They are not P. caerulipes.  I found those last year over Labor Day.  Here's a couple of comparision photos.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Psilocybe_Caerulipes.jpg

Both photos are mine and may not be reproduced without written permission.  I gave WarriorSoul permission and he's the only one that asked.

Notice the umbo on even the smallest specimen.  Plus the season is way off.  They don't come out till late June.

They aren't P. silvatica either.  The caps aren't striate at all.  The striations appear with the cap is sufficiently translucent enough for the gills to show through.

Make as many spore prints as you can and watch for another flush.  Specimens and prints should be sent to Workman.  Also Alan Rockefeller if you have enough.  If there is any left over I would like a copy as well.  If not, it's no big deal.

Congratulations.

Habitat don't seem right for Psilocybe liniformans var. americana.

His friend found these in the fall, so the season isn't off for P.caerulipes, but they seem too small to be that species and they arent growing cespitose like caerulipes does.

And like Danny said the habitat is wrong for P.liniformans var. americana.

I vote for Psilocybe silvatica, the cap can be even to striatulate, gregarious but not cespitose, also the dark color and small size points this way. The season for this species doesn't start until the end of September.

Good call, Danny.  I'm not familiar with that species.  I was just going with what Alan said.

WS:  Yeah, I didn't read the post carefully enough to notice he said in the fall.  I was looking at the mushrooms and their features.  What does "even to striatulate"  mean?  Striate means "marked by stripes, grooves, or ridges," striatulate means "marked by small stripes, grooves, or ridges."  What does "even" mean in this context?  I think it is futile to speculate beyond this.  That said, I don't think it is any of those mushrooms.  P. silvatica, as you said, comes closest.
