Re: Who Are You? [Re: Veritas]
    #9781000 - 02/11/09 07:56 PM (3 years, 3 months ago)

I've been posting more than usual lately, and it might keep happening (you just never know), so I figured I'd just do this now.

1.  What was your upbringing?  Did your family have money?  Were they religious?  Did they discuss philosophy and/or spirituality with you?

My family is about as middle class as you can get. I never got everything I wanted, but it wasn't often that I'd get nothing. That sort of thing. My family went to church every Sunday (Episcopalian) until we moved to PA. We went a few times while we were there, and my brother and I had to attend bible school for a little while. I was too young A. for anyone to have really gotten into the actual religion with me and B. to pay attention anyway. I almost got held back in 1st grade because I'd always play with action figures instead of doing my work. As it turns out I wasn't developmentally challenged, I just didn't feel like doing busy work all day. My parents never really talked about philosophy, spirituality, or religion with me though. I'm sure they would have if I had asked, but I didn't (by the time it was something I actually thought about I was already in the habit of keeping everything to myself and figuring things out on my own).

2.  How was your educational experience?  Did you enjoy school?  Were you academically-oriented, or disinterested?  How much of your education has found application in your daily life?

I never really liked school, but that's mostly because I was one of those "everyone but me is dumb, I hate people" teenagers. I wasn't goth or anything, just disappointed with people. Most of my peers were very immature and disrespectful. And they acted like simple algebra was incomprehensible magic. The subjects sucked too, mostly. I liked some classes, and not others, but I've always been a fan of googling things that interest me. I did and continue to do well in school. The only C I've had was in high advanced Ap calc, and it was because I never took trig, which is kind of important in calculus. The only thing aside from basic math that I've found applicable is what I learned about writing because that's what I'm in college for and it's something I like to do.

3.  What career interests you?  Are you working in this career now?  Do you feel satisfied in your work, or is it mainly a paycheck job?  What work would you do if you did not have to earn money?

If I could have any job, it would be a toss-up between musician, writer, some kind of visual artist (painting, photography, w/e), someone who grows plants, or the sole night-shift janitor in a large building.

4.  Has your philosophy/spirituality changed much over the years?  Have you had epiphanies or rude awakenings which led you to reconsider your beliefs/values?  At what age did you first become interested in philosophy/spirituality?

My philosophy has changed drastically over the years. Rude awakenings are just unpleasant epiphanies. I've realized a lot just by sitting around and daydreaming. I've realized a lot just by sitting around and daydreaming while on drugs. I've realized a lot through rude awakenings as well. Probably the worst was when a girl I was (at least I thought I was, I'm not so sure now) in love with cheated on me, lied about it (a lot), and then she broke up with me over the internet. That wasn't even the end of it, but this post is already too long. Anyway, that particular incident eventually resulted in a near-total overhaul of myself. It pretty much pointed out everything about me that I didn't like, and it taught me a lot about other people and life in general.

5.  What are your core values?  How are these values expressed in your daily life?  Do you feel that your values are similar or dissimilar to those of the majority?

I don't know. I don't really have values. I mean, I don't go around robbing people or anything, but it seems to me that nearly, if not actually, 100% of the time values change with context and depend entirely on the person in question. Right and wrong are made up. And "core values" kind of implies some values are more important than others, and I think that's wrong on a number of levels. I just try to be happy, try not to make others unhappy, and when the opportunity presents itself, try to make others happy. If I ever say something that seems arrogant or mean or douchey or whatever, it's probably just my lack of ability to accurately represent the intangibles of communication through the medium that is the internet. I'm never a dick on purpose because it makes me feel like shit.

1.  What was your upbringing?  Not so good on the psyche.

2. Did your family have money? Yes

3. Were they religious? No

4. Did they discuss philosophy and/or spirituality with you?  Not really, mostly politics.

5. How was your educational experience? Not very good public school and now I'm in college as a philosophy major. I participated in competitive policy style debate in high school. In college I participate in the National Parliamentary Debate Association league. I am also doing a model united nations at the united nations for the second time this year.

6. Did you enjoy school? No, except for debate.

7. Were you academically-oriented, or disinterested?  Interested

8. How much of your education has found application in your daily life? My life has revolved around education since I was a child. Outside of school I kayak and camp in the summer. It helps because I learned a lot in science classes.

9.  What career interests you? 1.Guiding rafts for a living but...2.I'll probably end up joining the peace corps after I get my undergraduate degree. After that the military. Then graduate school then a career in who knows what???

10. Are you working in this career now? Yes, hopefully again this summer too.

11. Do you feel satisfied in your work, or is it mainly a paycheck job? The money is shit, its all about the job when you guide.

12. What work would you do if you did not have to earn money? Instructing beginner kayakers, i do that for pretty much no money.

13.  Has your philosophy/spirituality changed much over the years? Yes, I am now pretty much completely atheist.

14. Have you had epiphanies or rude awakenings which led you to reconsider your beliefs/values? No it was a building process.

15. At what age did you first become interested in philosophy/spirituality? As early as I can remember.

16. What are your core values? You control your life in an absurd world.

17. How are these values expressed in your daily life? I am more a product of my society and culture than I am of my personal philosophy.

18. Do you feel that your values are similar or dissimilar to those of the majority? Similar.

1.  What was your upbringing?  Did your family have money?  Were they religious?  Did they discuss philosophy and/or spirituality with you?

My upbringing was fair.  I had parents that were there for me if and when I ever decided I had to talk to them about something (which I rarely did, and still rarely do).  I had a tight-knit group of friends during my first couple years of school, but once they all started moving away I lost contact with them, and have struggled with relationships since.

My parents had money, but not lots of it.  We could pay bills, buy groceries, support ourselves and still have a little bit of money for the odd occasion.  They mostly saved their money for retirement, paying off credit, etc.

Religion and philosophy/spirituality was never really discussed in my household.  From time to time there would be the odd talk about the general situation in the current world, being a good person, getting work done ahead of time, the good ol' stuff.  My folks really never knew of my views on anything, life, religion, or philosophy until recently.  From the way I always understood it, I was by myself in this hodge-podge, and that thought has seemed to stick with everything I do.  I can't do teams, and most of the time I would rather be alone.  Go figure.

2.  How was your educational experience?  Did you enjoy school?  Were you academically-oriented, or disinterested?  How much of your education has found application in your daily life?

My educational experience was hell at the start.  In grades 1 and 4 I got picked on severely.  Essentially, all the "popular kids", the one group that all dress nice and talk about hockey, commercials, and what-have-you would gang up and chase me around the schoolyard.  If they ever managed to catch up to me I was pushed to the ground and kicked in the shins, sides, legs, and arms, until I could scramble away again.  I pushed through though, eventually stopped going near those people, and continued being myself.

In grade 5 I started getting interested in skateboarding and BMX.  Boarding never lasted; I could ollie but wasn't determined to learn any more tricks, for fear of hurting myself.  The BMX stuck though.  After a few years I was getting pretty good, I could double-peg and feeble grind most moderate height ledges, could do flatground tailwhips, and flow around parks.. then my bike got jacked.

Around the same time I picked up guitar.  This was another major turning point in my life, as music like Blink-182, Gob, rap crap, Limp Bizkit and the like immediately stopped interesting me.  It was then that I discovered Grand Funk Railroad (thanks Dad!), Hendrix, the Who, Zeppelin, Floyd, Little Feat, and other great bands.

Come high school I started noticing just how different I was from other people.  It was probably this that lead me to my confused mentality and a search of self.  Right around this time, or maybe before grade 9, I began finding out new music.  It was this amazing new magic, a giant well of music that I had accidentally stumbled upon.  Bands like Electric Wizard, Sunn, Earth, the Melvins, and Bongzilla forever changed me (oh, and psychedelics.. but later).

It was those bands that first drove me to smoke weed.  It wasn't people, image, or a reason to rebel.. it was just purely to see how I could enjoy music that I love under the influence of cannabis.  Let's just say I'm still smokin'.

Now I'm done high school, but I haven't even done anything with my life.  I'm slaving myself just to keep my place, feed and clothe myself and buy weed.  Doesn't that sound all too familiar?

3.  What career interests you?  Are you working in this career now?  Do you feel satisfied in your work, or is it mainly a paycheck job?  What work would you do if you did not have to earn money?

I've been thinking of going into the music recording field.  It's expensive, but I'd be doing something I really enjoy.  I always love hearing new music, and to be the guy who records that music and makes it sound the way it does seems like the dream.  If I can't do that I was thinking of taking a baking course in community college, get an apprenticeship, and maybe start my own bakery.  Hopefully by that point cannabis will be legal :vaped:

4.  Has your philosophy/spirituality changed much over the years?  Have you had epiphanies or rude awakenings which led you to reconsider your beliefs/values?  At what age did you first become interested in philosophy/spirituality?

I'm still very young, so philosophy and spirituality haven't been a part of my life that long, maybe 6-7 years, when I was around 15.  I've thought about my place in the world, how I can make a difference in either myself or other people, but as far as leading a good life and being the best person one can be.. fuck me.  I ain't knowin' that.

5.  What are your core values?  How are these values expressed in your daily life?  Do you feel that your values are similar or dissimilar to those of the majority?

My core values are like most sane people's.  The only thing is I seem to keep them to myself.  I don't have a problem with others doing what they please, as long as it doesn't interfere with me.  I feel distanced from the majority of yesteryear.  I feel distanced from my own generation even, but there's a sense of.. unity almost.

I'm extremely tired, forgive me.

Hello friends. I'm a truth seeker who wants to learn from you, as I am always seeking the truth. I am in a love affair with life, in and of itself; it is a love that never dies. Life is completely fulfilling, and I will always have everything I've ever wanted. I consider myself a spiritual being, one who sees himself in everyone, and therefore loves everyone. I consider myself a psychonaut, one who has seen beyond himself and learned a great deal from psychedelics. I am here to share with you what I have found on my path to seek the truth.

Some of my hobbies include playing guitar (rhythm, acoustic), singing, and performing. I gain most of my inspiration from The Beatles. I connect with lyrics; I become music. I also practice yoga and I enjoy riding my bike (weather permitting).

I am here to spread my love unconditionally, and I hope you all can learn from me as I seek to learn from you.

I look forward to seeking, spreading, and defining the truth of life with you all.

Other than that, I'm a university student majoring in psychology.  Cheers.

..and in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make.

1. My family is pseudo-religious. They just don't seem to have time for spirituality. And there also is lack of belief. That means: They believe in god and in the words of Jesus and still they don't
I tried to talk to them about spirituality but it only worked a bit.

2. I still am in school and no it's not very useful to me. I don't learn anything that helps me in any way. But I'm fine with that ;D

3. There is no career (anymore) that really interests me. But before my life went through a gigantic change I was very keen on becoming musician.

4. Since I can remember philosophy was a hot topic for me. Well okay, not since I can remember but since I was 9
It became more and more important over the years and when it almost got unimportant the change came over me. But that's not for now to be told :P
First I didn't face the topic of religion, I was pseudo religious. Then I was atheist. Now I'm trans religious spiritual.

5. Honesty, love, friendship, etc.

1 no my family was not rich father sort of generic proadstin mother southern baptist we went to her church no they didn't talk about it to me
2 I was board out of my gored the whole time at school the math and reading is useful not much else from school is
3 the trades and maintenance would like to work on computers but I don't have the paper to prove any knowledge about them now it's just a job it was a source of pride but not any more
4 I'm a hippy and as such extremely liberal
I always was spiritual because of a feeling that something in my mind was missing as far back as I can remember
when I was told that all I have to do is believe it set off an alarm in my 6year old head such that I was driven out of the Christan church by it
5 my spiritual path demands that I live it from the level of every thought on up to every action in life I try real hard to do it
the state of my path on the web is such that I would rather not say what it is
