Someone had asked me about using dowels, you can make a lot more by filling bags but this is good enough for around the house It's surprising, actually, how many a quart jar can hold.

Dowels from here:
http://www.midwestdowel.com/dowelpins.htm
Prep as follows; Dowels were put into a big thermos with boiling water added. This was sealed for a day, then decanted. Another fill with boiling water, another day, and they were drained and put into jars. A sprinkling of colonized birdseed is more than enough, you don't want too much seed. PC'ing is the recommended procedure for dowels, but I have yet to see a problem doing it this way. I bet even one of the steeping steps would be enough.
I don't know what I was thinking when I made them, though, it's way too early to plug logs.
The company above is a very good one, the guy I talked to was very helpful.

Part no. "PIN 0375". The prices seemed reasonable, including shipping it was under 20$ for a thousand. There are a couple of different choices in the type of wood you can choose, all hardwood [as furniture pins usually are]. Not many people have the luxury of being able to do outdoor logs; they do make gread bordering for a garden, though. I wish they would have produced this fall, but what can you do
