hmmm, interesting stems but I think they are Pan cyans. I'm not sure what the differences are to be honest but considering you are in Florida they are most likely P. cyanescens, congrats

This should clear it up a bit: http://www.shroomery.org/8421/Panaeolus-cyanescens-FAQ#distinguish
Looks like the only real macroscopic difference is cap size/height. Guess you'd pretty much need a microscope to tell for certain, I'd rather just call them cyanescens

I've been putting a lot of time into this and after a few problems with conflicting information I now think I have a pretty good handle on the differences.
Panaeolus cyanescens: most common (in wild), palid pins or only slightly pigmented that soon fades with maturity, large spores.
Panaeolus cambodginiensis: second most common species, very dark chocolate to olive pins, small spores, sometimes produces sclerotia-like bodies in culture. In my experience, this species seems to contain the most lab friendly strains and is overly represented in circulated strains.
Panaeolus tropicalis: rare, palid pins, small spores (like P. cambodginiensis). This is the most problematic species as far as misinformation is concerned. Stamets indicated that it is a two spored species (two spores per basidium) which is incorrect. Gerhardt's key to the Copelandia states that its a darkly pigmented species, which is also incorrect. This led me astray on the Sandoze "tropicalis" identification. That strain is better served as P. cambodginiensis.
Once the Copelandia are mature the caps tend to fade and they all tend to look about the same. Microscopic examination is the only way to be make certain the identification. There are also other minor Copelandian species such as P. bisporus but these are rarely seen.
I'm working on a simplified but detailed guide to hopefully make this easier.

Thanks once again, for you dedication. Stamets and errata? Say it isn't so.
