went hunting the other day

I went on a hunt the other day with CptnGarden and his lady. we did not run into the bobcat, but we did find something just as elusive and special: Hericium erinaceus.
i forgot to bring my cam, but cptn got a few pics.
we had a good time of hunting, finding also Gymnopilus luteifolius, G. sapenius, Trametes versicolor in a splended array or colors, T. hirsuta or similar, a maze polypore and a few others.
cptn: please feel free to post your pictures.
i'm bicycling into town today, and i'll probably do some hunting near 1mile. i'll remember the camera this time.
--------------------
Along a path I walk this night, clear to no other eyes than mine.
In faerie circles perchance I might, hope Elven honey bread to find.
Over stream and tangled root I leap, o'er bough and slumbering badger's keep.
Under hoary oak and willow I bound, to find such groves as can be found,
the sating mushrooms; spring's delight, as gifts from figures of the night.

i hit up the first 5 miles of the park today. cycled about 40 miles total and i'm perfectly exhausted.
i only found 3 specimens of G. luteofolius there. none of my old gym areas where fruiting. no G. junonius to be found.
the giant honeys are fruiting down there.
ran across some over mature oysters and collected spawn.
the cam is not working again, i really need a new one of my own.

any time.
by the way, those Clitocybe gibba [white ones with the upturned caps] are everywhere around middle and lower park.
the redwood groves have no blewits yet, but the duff is still dry, and it'll take several more rains to get through the canopy and saturate the ground. i expect to be seeing them within two to four weeks.
there where a load more Trametes and those maze polypores. i saw one down oak colonized by Galerina marginata.
i also saw a few specimens of a honey i'm not used to seeing. they are large, and even more robust than the giant clustered form we usually see here, and grow more or less terrestrially, singly, etc and while they have a 'pinched' annular zone, the annulus is not really persistent.

thank you cactu. merry christmas to you and yours.
it's good to get back into hunting my old haunts. this area offers everything from candy caps and gyms to wild figs and bay laurel to ice cold melt-water swimming in the sweltering summer months.

found a few new luteofolius logs, and about 1,000 more sapineus pins on that one big spot i showed you
there was a lot of interesting mushrooms out today that werent out the past few days, and everything that was up before is now rotting from the rains.
i also found some various entoloma and pluteus mushrooms, pluteus in particular seemed to be 00t and ab00t.
we need to find some S. Crispa

you bout ready for this next big hunt?
i found a Boletus Zelleri out back my house today, bruised blue a little bit, not rimose, greyish/black/dark purple cap, had a good salty-mushroom taste. i didnt end up cooking it up though, despite it being in good condition (no bugs)
if we find some crazy amounts of porcini this week ima shit myself. but i might be content enough trying some Zelleri if we end up finding a bunch.
also, my hericium is tearing up the cardboard, no contamns yet.

by the way, Evan is coming a long for sure, and were leaving to go hunting definitely before noon, we need at least 4 hours in.

nice, my herecium tissue cultures [also on cardboard, because i don't have my new petris yet and i'm out of jars] have only now started to grow vegetatively.
i'm planing to start some more P. oystreatus, since my wild spawn isn't doing anything yet, and i also picked up some buna-shimeji.
i'll have those culturing on cardboard untill i can do more agar work.
i'll be ready for the hunt tomorrow, and as always; the earlier the better. i'm stoked to go, as there's little new popping up around my place. if i see one more Nolanea in the orchard i'll go crazy.

the way i do it, just transfer any clean part of the fungus [wild spawn, stipe buts, etc] which will readily revert to vegetatve growth and sandwich it between layers of soaked, corrugated cardboard. if you keep it exposed to free moving air, molds [the only serious contamination threat in this method] are minimized, as most of them thrive in stagnant air.
i do this when i don't have time or resources for agar work, and it works great with most wood-loving species, and sometimes many others.
cptn and i have both done so with basal tissues from our Hericium.
cptn: i'd love to give them a try. when i get clean cultures of the shimeji and oyster, you're of course welcome to some.

i question the taste of the lyophyllum shimeji. lyophyllum sp dont look very appetizing. cant be as bad as the canned stinkhorns though. ughhh.... stinkhorns

I cooked some for a bunch of people in santa cruz the other day and they gave it really good reviews.
I fried it in a cast iron pan until it started to brown, those parts were the best.
They also really liked the Agaricus albolutescens and matsutake that I cooked in the same pan, but they seemed to like the zelleri most.

interesting, i appreciate the info! ill definitely give them a try next time, they had a great soft watery texture.
we didnt find anything to eat today, we spent more time driving today than hunting, and we quickly ditched a high elevation burn-ground area for our old spot with the lactarius, which as soon as we arrived it started to get dark. luckily this time we found the land thats ok to walk on, and found some cow grazing lands through the forest of tall grass and trees. this area has some very strange mushrooms, ive never seen coprinus micaceus as big as we did today, and ive never seen jack o lanterns like weve been finding - they truly have a wide variety of appearances.
our biggest find seems to be some very small Panus conchatus specimens, if so were gonna start cultivating them.
unfortunately after all the pints and taco truck i think im gonna have to wait til the morning to upload, im pooped.

yeah; i went home and straight to bed aswell.
i looked through my pics before hand, and found that most of them didn't come out. i don't think my cam focuses well in the rain.
what did come out, and which i'll upload in a bit are the pictures of the very clavate jack-o-lanterns and the purple oysters. after looking them over, i'm pretty sure they where P. conchatus. thanks for the identification.

our high elevation spot, we were probably 2500ft above sea level. the area was recently plagued with wildfires caused by lightning.

Coprinus Micaceus, why was this specimen so large?!! holy cow! we also saw some various galerina, turkey tails, rotten mushrooms of various brown squishy variations, some various gilled brown/orangish with a hearty mushroom smell much like agaricus augustus large mushrooms growing from the side of a living oak tree, and a possible hericium we found half rotted at the base of a tree that it possibly fell from. the air was hard to breathe, the cold was so intense the back of my head hurt, and eventually we couldnt find shit, so we left.
as soon as we arrived at our other spot in about 200-600ft elevation, we had 30 minutes of light left, so we got to business
some lactarius, didnt test these ones

look at those clavate Jacks!!!
then we had some taco truck, some pints, and plenty of sleep that night

time to make some more cardboard spawn, and by the way, i transfered some of that hericium into the tea-leeched sawdust pellets.

cool. it's about the time i figured we should hit up that redwood grove at the park. i haven't checked it for blewits in a few years, but as there's a continual renewal of the duff, i'm sure they still grow there.

In faerie circles perchance I might, hope Elven honey bread to find.
Over stream and tangled root I leap, o'er bough and slumbering badger's keep.
Under hoary oak and willow I bound, to find such groves as can be found,
the sating mushrooms; spring's delight, as gifts from figures of the night.

they come back year after year in the same spots from what i hear.
we didnt find any in good enough condition to want to eat, but now ive got 12 pieces of cardboard with thin strips of lepista flesh on them, woot! we were in town today for awhile and almost gave you a call, but daylight was again running out.
we should definitely go look for Lepista sometime soon at the redwoods, and back at our lactarius spot again.
i think that high elevation area we went to (and around) might be a very good spot for morels, if not this year then in the next few. morels are just a few months away.

there is already regrowth at the burns, and it looks over a year old, so i think spring would be great. since the snow is only occasional, and dosen't tend to stick around that elevation, i think the verry beginning of spring would be good. especially as there's no telling how long the rains will hold out this year.

here are what was worth keeping of my share of the photos. sadly so many of them didn't come out with the autofocus acting up.
Amanita ocreata:

there where many cattle skulls around:

This seems to be an entoloma:

Some Galerinas that Cptn found:

this seemed to be a Colybia, Rhotocollybia or similar. i'm calling it Gymnopus dryophilus for the moment:

i don't remember, but i think this was one of the Russulas. it was pretty large:

there where jack-o-lanterns everywhere:

we saw many large Lactarius, seemed to be L. alnicola.

these where one a large dead oak. i think they where Lentinus lepideus. they did not smell similar to L. ponderosus, though they where pungent:

I believe these used to be an Entoloma or related aswell:

Here there where some Psathyrella. i had more photos, but they didn't come out:

these are the purple oysters. i suppose P. conchatus is correct:

Many Russula, looked to be in the R. brevipes group:

i have no idea what these where, and don't really remember them well:

we where hunting, part of the time near a burn site in the mountains, but the scenery across the river was great:

Cptn: my mead is turning out great. it's around 4-5% right now, and still very sweet, with a high gravity. i'll give it 3-4 more days then see about racking it to settle. i'm sure this one will be drinkable right away, like my last few. the nose is sharp, and slightly vinegary, but there is nearly no sulfer compenent and the flavor is good and not the least sour.

well had some luck today for sure...
First off, the Hericium!

it was so low to the ground i was kinda like son of a $%^$%&@$%& cause of all the cleaning i would have to do, but it was worth it. while down there scraping it out i smelled something horrible, the log.
dirty knees for a buncha rotten hericium (seen above is 1/3 of the cluster!) on a rotten log (the log smelled like dead animals)
at least i know another spot they are sprouting out from now...
just down the way...
i think more panus conchatus specimens... more cloning fun, yay.

this is what i took home to eat, the un-bug-home specimens.
that big one weighs as much as our chihuahua.
i also saw these from a distance
i was like then i got a bit closer and was like "Thats false advertising!"
i also finally found something growing under a bay/laurel
 Hygrocybe sp.

i checked the redwood area, and didnt find them under the redwoods, there was some nearby though (filled with bugs), and some by the gymn spot (just a few bugs in the gills).
i cut the stem base off that big one and broke it up in little pieces and stuffed it into the ground around the area.
and my agrocybe aegerita LC's are growing...... not sure whats growing at this point though.
im drying half that big mushroom, and half the little mushroom. im gonna give them a try tonight.
that little one was hard to spot under all the litter, it was kinda funny cause i was like "i bet theres so many we arent seeing" and moved some leafs and found it

i racked the mead in-bottle today, 7 bottles.
it's coming great, but there's going to be a lot of sediment by the time it finishes.
this will definitely be drinkable right away, if not too clear. there are little of the off flavors i usually see with baking strains.
i'm keeping this culture.

sounds like its gonna be good!
my culture work on our first specimens of p.conchatus was eaten by a very dark grey cobweb... either that or this mushroom has some freakish mycelium...
i got 4 more cultures off the other ones i found though, and all the first lepista cultures are taking to the cardboard nicely.

good to hear.
i don't know what P. conchatus mycellia should look like, so you can never tell unless the mycellia you are seeing begin to sporulate.

it's in the fridge. i've been, uhm, tasting.
it's much clearer now than the other day. i'm actually tasting right now. slightest funk to the taste, probably from where i disturbed the sediment a tad when i poured. just the right amount of tart, and the sugars are still high; if i can get the corks in time and time it right, i should be able to get a good bit of carbonation without risking blowing the bottles. two of them are champagne type bottles anyway.

ok, so that cardboard sandwich of conchatus that i threw away was definitely contaminated with something, maybe a blackrot. the mycelium coming off some of these new specimens is the same ropey shit that looks weird, but its a much lighter color (greyish white)
it reminds me of when u eat a mango down to the seed and theres that stringy ropey shit hanging off all sides of the seed.
looks kinda funky
poured 20 plates yesterday too, 5 ostreatus 5 citrinopileatus 10 agrocybe aegerita
i filled a whole dresser drawer with agar plates and cardboard sandwiches and everything is individually bagged for contamn control

went looking in somewhat high elevation (2000ft, same as our other high elevation area), in our amanita lanei area, and realized we were a bit behind schedule as most of the boletus in the area were rotten or fall apart/full of bugs. we saw many boletus zelleri, as well as various lactarius and russula.

we gave these lactarius a taste, they were mildly peppery, they have beautiful red/orangish, and purple tones to them.
only hunted for an hour, but thought ide report my shitty finds
ill give the spot a thorough lookover in a week, hopefully when the next flush comes.
