Timmy Leary was necessary. Ideas, perspectives, ideals manifest through many outlets. Leary just being one of them, delete him and the other outlets spew forth. The opposing forces will always make a demon out of the face men for the general mass is so stupid as to associate tools with a single tool user. And as society is programmed into "sanity", anyone who speaks of the outsane will demonize themselves to the eyes of the "sane".
But there are those who will want to break free, to also become outsane. All movements have contrasting ideals working for the same general cause. Malcolm x and MLK, so on and so forth. But the thing is reality is dynamic, not static. Dualistic. Therefore, no matter how much sense one seems to make or not, or how beneficial or not one appears to be, these people will be a necessary but partial part of the equation. One may take from anyone what they choose to take and adapt to their own lifestyle. As righteousness is relative, who is any other person but oneself to judge of its worth?
But the underlying factor to all this is that we may bastardize or make a saint out of people everywhere from Timothy leary to Albert Fish. But there will always be these people in this current state of evolution. And there will always be discord.

I do'nt think he seems "spaced" in that interview. To me, he looks like someone who knows the absurdity of the issue they're trying to push and just takes a "you gotta be fucking kidding me, lolz" attitude. For example, imagine you're 12 and do'nt even know how you would go about smoking pot. You buy a Bob Marley cd because you like his sound. Your parents find out and jump all over you saying "OMG!!! Our little baby is on the drugs!! You're grounded for a year!!" Some might be angry, but a common reaction would be something like the "you gotta be fucking kidding me lolz" attitude aforementioned. I think he just seems like someone who is fed up about some things tied to him, sees the pointlessness in arguing about it at an intellectual level, and just has a little crazy fun at the mercy of the delusional mass.

cognitive shift - great statement. amazing how many shroomers overlooked that simply fact. LSD does not make you crazy, only brings your mental insufficiencies to the surface.
Also, I want to see some examples to why people think leary was so crazy. Yes, some of his ideas were a little off mark, "tune in, drop out" that whole thing was a little far off.
However, if it weren't for the beatnik's, and people like timothy leary, the movement from 65-70, would probably not have happened.
To say that he did more harm than good, is a very naive thing to say. IMO

1. Timothy Leary was a jack ass and really fucked up a lot of young kids' lives by telling them to tune in, tune out, and drop out. I really don't have much respect for the guy. Other media icons of the time were more fascinating and insightful but that's my opinion.
2. I'm sure the LSD didn't help him...he was a pretty fucked up guy after using it extensively. It just drove him too deep into the hippy mentality. I'm a bit of a hippy, but I know my boundaries. I've had friends take it way too far and most of them have ended up being life time stoners/ druggies with no desire to accomplish anything with their lives. Life is all about moderation. However I won't judge them for their decisions and they are happy with their lives so that's all that counts!

How can you say he fucked up kids lives? Do you know kids that took LSD, because leary told them to, and there lives spiraled down hill because of that initial experience. There could be countless people who listened to leary, and after that first LSD trip their lives have been nothing but joy.
Regardless of how fucked up we all know, "tune in drop out" was, you can not say it fucked up kids lives, with no proof. Who knows of all the people that Leary may have actually helped?

That interview is bullshit, he knew they were there to just berate him and that's why he tried to leave.
Fuck that Art guy. Leary was just eccentric, and eccentric people act "crazy" only because we don't understand their motives.
And fuck anyone who hates Leary for bringing LSD to the attention of millions. Without that I would have never wanted to try psychedelics. Sure it probably helped with making it illegal but it kept it from being just an exclusive underground yuppie drug.
And who cares if Leary was crazy? I'm sure most of the people in this forum have felt crazy at one point. We're not crazy, it's the whole fucked up world that's crazy. Millions spent on tiny trinkets and plastic toys while millions of children starve. There's no justice, no truth, not anything worth a fuck in this world.

I use to dislike Timothy Leary because I thought he was responsible for making LSD illegal. But then I realized that LSD becoming illegal was inevitable. I now am extremely grateful for Leary's actions. I believe I would never have experienced LSD if it wasn't for him. The chemists who synthesized my LSD were very likely turned on to LSD by Timothy Leary. I think we all owe him the thanks he deserves, too bad he's dead.

Leary was an egomaniac. But as for that video, I think acid was probably the prime cause for his behavior there. Still, I've seen lots of people that have done lots of acid that wouldn't act that way so I think I must conclude that though acid was a key factor, Leary was just lost in his own head either way.

As much as I want to think he was a lunatic and cast some of the blame on him for LSDs bad image, I also think that without him LSD could have faded into obscurity after it became illegal. If nothing else, Leary helped to create the unstoppable machine that is the underground drug culture in America.
Illegal or not almost all of us can still obtain it. I think Leary helped create that.
