gymnopilus aeruginosus lookalikes?
    #9362731 - 12/04/08 01:23 AM (5 years, 10 months ago)

I found what I believe to be a small patch of gymnopilus aeruginosus.  Theyve got the characteristic scaly cap with brown/oragne coloring, rust orange spore print, blue-green tones on the cap, slightly decurrent orange gills.  I am tempted to make some tea, but Im wondering if there are any poisonous look-alikes I should know about.  I probably wont do it anyway until I can get an expert to confirm the ID in person, since I have a nice stash of dried-out p. cyanescens that I picked recently.

I'm not sure of any except other Gymnopilus.  Does it taste bitter?
You are wise not to consume them before a proper id.

I took a little taste and spit it out- it's bitter.  I definitely won't eat it without getting an ID in person.  Even if I had good pictures, I would not be comfortable eating it based on an ID confirmation made on the internet.  My friend who took a mycology class helped me ID it using Mushrooms Demystified by David Aurora.  She said she can probably get her teacher to help us ID it for sure.  I was just wondering if there was a particular risk of misidentifying a poisonous mushroom as G. aeruginosus.

Some possibly harmful Galerina sp. can be mistaken for some Gymnopilus sp. to the untrained eye...same spore print color and habitat as well as general color.
The bitter taste is a good sign you do, in fact, have a G. aeruginosus, but, as we have both agreed, caution is your friend.

Gymnopilus luteofolius is a look-a-like for aeruginosus.

Seeing as the OP only has 8 posts I'd say we'd need a pic before anyone would say what you have is safe to eat.

yeah pics are needed

dont eat them unless your 100% sure, besides the obvious reasons for making sure you have a positive ID there's always the reason of wanting to have a good trip.

Imagine eating sum mushrooms you weren't sure of, the come up would be horrible, you wouldn't know if you were going to die, trip, or have diarrhea and that would ruin the mood for the rest of the trip.

I didn't get any good pics, which is why I didn't do an official "ID request."  I'm not going to eat it unless I can get a positive ID from my friend's mycology professor in person.

Is this an id request? Where's the pics?
G.aeruginosus is not a species that turns up frequently here.

Gymnopilus don't have green spore prints, they have orange - rusty orange prints.

By the way, this is a 9 month old thread.
