2002 Azure Hunting!!
    #933690 - 10/05/02 12:40 AM (21 years, 5 months ago)

This will be my official 2002 azure hunting thread. I will post updates as to the hunting conditions in Astoria and neighboring cities. I will post pics of my finds.

I encourage all of you to post the same and to post any ??s about azure hunting here.

The season shall soon be upon us!!!

Dobie asked a ? in another forum, I will address it here. He wanted me to advise him of locations on the Oregon side of the Columbia for picking azures.

While I can not divuldge my favorite locals for obvious reasons, I will name one location that is easy to find and that has great hunting grounds that follow the standard azure habitat.

Ft. Sevens State Park is a great spot to find azures growing in Maratime grass covered dunes. There are several roads labeled according to the letters of the alphabet, give that a shot.

Here is my favourite pic from last years hunting:

Here is one to show the beauty of the azurescen:

Here are some links to last years hunting results:

do these things really lose as much potency when drying as I hear they do?

might as well hunt cyans then, I hear they don't lose much potency at all when drying.. you can only keep a mushroom fresh for so long. did you find any cyans last year Josh?

I vaguely recall a reference to sustained potency after drying. I thought that the reference stated they retain a good portion of potency. I'll see if I can find the reference.

I ate them as dry specimens only and they were decently powerful. I don't like the azure trip however. I find that I feel something different in them that affects my muscles in a negative way. I have had the same experience w/ cyans.

I did not hunt for cyans last year. I hope to head up to the Puget Sound area for some cyan hunting this year though.

Joshua

Read this trip report:

7 g Azure Trip.

I ate 3.5 grams cyans a couple of weekends ago. I felt the same muscle weakness as w/ the azures. I had problems later in the trip focusing my eyes. It was as if my muscles for focusing were drunk, it was not comfortable for me at all. My arm muscles and my leg muscles were a little weak and shakey. The whole trip was 7 hrs or so, the muscle phenom lasted from about the 4 th hour to 12 hours.

so is it the same degree on cyans? less, more?? cyans and azures deliver the same trip pretty much?

very interesting trip report.. wow.

wow! I loved this post last season too! Im always surprised by the size of azures - they are big mushrooms for woodlovers!! And id say that due the high levels of psilocybin detected in this mushroom, that it should maintain potency after drying. Cant wait to may here when our rain starts to see if we can get them up and running down under.
They are very similar to Australian species - in particular we have a newly discovered mushroom in Australian - possibly ps.eucalypta - that is very similar to this mushroom
keep us informed Joshua!!

Perhaps the muscle thing could be attributed to something other than the mushrooms themselves. like your physical health and strength?
or maybe not.

according to MJ Azures and Beaos lose a good amount of potency when drying, cyans do not.

this again according to Mushroom John.

yeah, that park is huge, but i see people hunting even when there aint shit to hunt.  seems pretty hot.....i dunno.
i think that azures, having a large dose of both psilocybin AND psilocyn, are relatively potent after drying (psilocybin keeps, psilocyn is ephemeral..)
i think stamets says so in his psilo guide.
i also read somewhere that baeocystin had the unpleasant association with muscular incoordination and headaches....it scared me a long time ago...funny, azures have more baeocystin than baeocystis generally....maybe thats what gets you, joshua.
since azures have such an inordinate amount of psilocyn, as is evidenced by all that damn bluing (), one would think that the experience of the dried shrooms would be vastly different than that of the fresh material.
i only ate one single azure out of the several ounces i got last year.  fresh little fucker the size of my thumb.
i couldnt drive.

Not doubting the nedless wisdom of MJ Shroomer, gartz found a psilocybin content around 1.7 percent plus. If we believe that, this alkaloid is more stable than psilocin, then you would expect azures to maintain some of their potency. Or something.

theyre easy to find there.  no more clues for you. will be in westport for a surf sojurn this weekend and will be checking things out there as well. I tend to devote a lot of time looking for our fun little friends this time of year, dont feel bad that I beat you.  try finding my cyan spots in seattle if you can. Left about a hundred pins to grow this morning so by wednesday they will be phat! Noone has any idea either. I see hippies walk right past them every time I am there.

Wassup Josh.
This is Kevin, Mike (Azurepowers) old roomate.

Mike is in jail FYI. He's become a tweaker downtown P-town.
He lost it. Couldnt handle the big city, or tweak.

May god have mercy on his soul.

But hey, at least he showed me some good spots around Astoria, Hammond.

Has the season begun there yet????????????

yeh the park is my spot too. I have been thinking about boating it out to that Island b/t wa an or, looked small though. Big park and the cops are on the scene a little bit but there are so many of us up to it and only so many of us really with it that they don't know whose pocket to look in. It is big enough and I do not know how much of the area is covered with them. But I found my spot the first place I got out of my car and have never had the need to find another spot. peace....

GSAfarmer and I made a trip to Astoria over the weekend and found some Azures!!! We traveled south from Astoria and looked for liberty caps as well but had no success. Only one of the patches I hunt at was fruiting. Two other patches have been destroyed by urban growth. My favorite patch looked like it had been sprayed w/ either an herbicide or a fungicide .

Our harvest came in at over 600 grams. We expect about two ounces dry. We have some caps that are printing right now. I don't know if the prints will turn out though.

Let the season begin!!!

This was the first specimen we found.

The total harvest.

A little art .

I was wondering about this weekend????????? FUCK YEHHHHH:) gonna give it a few more weeks though:)

Is that from a "natural" patch or did you help them allong a little bit???? ie alder chips, spawn... or just a patch you know of which you hit up from time to time???

no time at the moment to go but feels cool in Eugene now and getting damp enough seems like by next week we should have a good solid start?

just wondering what is the furthest south on the oregon coast anyone has found azures?..much of it has dune grasses and climate similar to Astoria..Ft.Stevens seems to be gettin a bit popular these daze..I'm thinking sort of in particular about that HUGE, VAST, WIDE dune grass covered area down by "Sea lion caves" (which is a trip in itself)..i'll be down there this week, and i was just wondering if anyone's had any luck there..peace..

In response to odd muscular effects....

I have had an experience with muscular stress that was unpleasant on three different occasions with Cubensis.  Mine was different though...I had intense, accurate visual control, and heightened senses.....even felt like I had a Spidey Sense   Anyway, I noticed that toward the end of the trip, if I did anything strange to over exert my calve muscles (walking long distances while on trip, or basketball, or just resting them and letting them cramp up) they would start to hurt, similar to a mild charliehorse....consequently, the morning after they're unbearably painful, waking walking difficult.....it's like they're permanently tensed up feeling, but the muscles are resting, not tense.  I've looked into this a little bit, and it seems that alkaloids may be behind the strange muscular tensing/lack of control and muscle drunken syndrome.  Just a thought...

re: muscular effects

My friend ate several fresh Azures last week and had a similar experience with loss of muscular control. FYI, he is an experienced psychonaut. Anyway, as Doobie says, towards the end of the trip, nearly sober, he began having trouble with his jaw and facial muscles. So much so that he had trouble speaking! It was as if he couldn't control his lips, and spoke with a lisp...also, he had extreme difficulty chewing. He was trying to eat a snickers bar about 5 hours after consuming. He described it as if he were trying to chew leather; at times he had to stop completely because he simply could not bite through the thing. Very weird, and more than a little freaky.

The effect lasted nearly an hour. There would seem to be something active within the shroom that has an unwanted effect. He didn't like the effect, but probably won't stop eating the Azures...they're just too nice in many other ways.

I experienced muscle twitching; like above my eye and in my arms. But I have noticed that it is directly corrolated to the amount that i injest. I like to not over due it so i rarely have a problem. I generally only eat like 1-2 gms (bone dry weight). I know many people like to eat like an eighth. But these are not cubes and there is that elemnt of baeocystin (i butchered that word:) in azurs unlike in any other. Is it not just speculation as to the effects of baeocystin have there been studies? Perhaps there is a corrolation there? hmmm.......

Muscle tension / spasm / trembling / tremors

Psilocybin leaches calcium from the users system. Calcium
is not only important for the building of strong bones and
teeth, but is also ESSENTIAL for muscle functioning. Too
little calcium in a users system is a guarentee for muscle
discomfort.

I have addressed this problem before when somebody posted
experiencing post mushroom trip headache. Set and
setting for a psychedelic experience is important. Equally important is the
proper maintenance of the human body.

If you are experiencing muscle discomfort as described in this
thread, take a look at the following threads:
headache or
extreme headache

Equally important is being properly hydrated ~ drink plenty of good quality
water prior to ingesting the magical fungi. I too used to experience moderate
to severe muscle tension/twitching during heavy experiences. Sometimes I
felt as if I were suffering from a seizure. Once my body was properly hydrated
and had a sufficient calcium supply, the latter symptoms disappeared.

Hope this was some help. Physical pain or discomfort does not go well with
any psychedelic experience.

Peace to Everyone,

Peaceful Nomad

Dobie-

If I could only tell you the paralysis that occurs for me when ingesting azures or cyans. I recently ate 3.1 g cubes, 1.5 g azures, and .5 g cyans.

I collapsed in the middle of a field. I couldn't walk 5 blocks. My co-tripper couldn't smile the next day. I have experience many muscular problems on these two spieces. They effect these muscle parts/groups: eye, facial, esophageal, hand and leg. These effects are due to the species. I have never had similar effects on cubes. Read this: A play by play trip on 7 grams Azures!!!!

While that particular trip was an extreme dose, I have still noticed the effects on much smaller doses as well. That just happens to be the only trip on azures that I have recorded.

9 of 10 extended forcast days call for a possibility of rain. Temps are in the right range. We should be seeing some very prolific azurescen flushes w/i the next 2 weeks!!!

I don't think it has anything to do w/ the leaching of calcium. I would go for some sort of competitive inhibition mechanism, but really have no idea.

I have not seen any literature suggesting the leaching of Ca+ from the body due to the presence of psilocin/psilocybin. I have dosed on extremely high doses of P. cubensis w/o even a hint of the same feelings I get from azurescens or cyanescens.

The condition Nomad speaks of may be different than the paralysis I am speaking of.

so, it must be the high(er) baeocystin content of the woodlovers, or what? sounds like this "syndrome" is caused by woodlovers as opposed to dunglovers. any reports on this occurring with pan cyans? other actives? again, what about woodlovers from other geographical areas?

I don't think it is the baeocystin. semilanceata have a high level of baeo in them, I have not felt anything similar on my liberty cap trips.

My friend and I who both ate fresh ps. baeostycis felt that before the come on of the actual mushroom trip - we both felt like sleeping and very dozy and muscle tiredness - now that you mention it, just like the feeling i get after eating a fat load of turkey.

(or maybe I'm combining 2 threads in my head here and replying half to both of them) but I did read the thread...maybe it was in the history of the weiliii one they were talking about tryptophan being in turkey and weiliis.. ah well I dont know.

ahah with a grain of salt. peace.

There is a big difference between what you describe and what we are speaking of. The feelings I get are to be described as paralysis. After the main peak in the trip I find my muscles do not respond as well to my control. Eventually I have colapsed from not being able to control my muscles. This affects different muscle groups. I have experienced the inability to walk, hold objects, focus my eyes, to drink, to smile, or to swallow water proficiently.

hum, so that would seem to rule out baeocystin. what then? does this appear to happen for both azures and psy yans in the same way/intensity? has this been reported only from specimens collected in the PCN? what about this happening from psy cyans say from california? again, i want to know if this occurs also from domesticated specimens grown elsewhere (e.g. austria ). anyway, this is an extremely interesting topic. joshua, could this information be organized in a separate thread? or in whatever way to allow us to collect as many reports and information as  possible. also, is this the sort of "scary thing" on which people should be fully informed? i remember stamets mentioning it. is there more precise information out there?

for tha record..i've done loads of liberty's and never experienced anything remotely like this, physicaly...so i don't think it's the baeocystin either...what else do these baby's contain that other psyliz' don't?..we seem to have reports of this happening from two people so far (at least on this thread)..has anyone else experienced this with azures?..

ok since i brought the idea of baeocystin in to play here, i must confess that upon further research i see that semilanceata has similar levels. Further if it were baeocystin, i believe that the it would be perceived more with semis than less because people would be eating greater weights due to its lesser overall activity levels. So??? It seems that we are talking about mussle twiching to total paralissis? I revere and respects azurs although i have tried eating them at very low doses on a daily basis and have had very good results. But i did also notice an eye twich at the same time period, however i do not necessarily associate it with the mushies. Eye twiching can happen to anyone at any time and it is totally normal. So I think it is really something associated with injesting at higher dosage levels and if the other input to this thread is accurate, then it must be species specific to a degree. BUT, i do not know anything about ca deficiency and have not done any background check on that thread. It sounds plausable if there is research to back it up...

how?

a post containing "where???????????????????????????????????????????????????????" doesn't do anything to contribte to the forum. if a user want's to know where azures occur they can do like everyone else is expected to and do a search. there are many secriptions of P. azurescens online, including on on the hunting FAQ i beieve.

a post saying "make sure to take prints" is less than relevant to the thread as these mushrooms where picked almost a year ago.
