Preparation of coco coir

Hey everyone! My cat just picked up some coir to experiment with. He want to know if he ought to pasteurize it, and if so what is the best way to go about it? Will nuking for 10 minutes do the trick, or should he bake or maybe put in a bag and simmer at 180 degrees?
Your resposes are appreciated! He really doesn't want to screw his nice, big casings up too badly here.

If your coir was packaged in brick form and shrink-wrapped, just explode it according to the instructions, moisten and use as is. No treatment neccesary.

Actually, the coir that we picked up is pre-moistened in a big bag, like you get potting soil. Should this be pasteurized, then?
I'm a little concerned about the part of the description that states:
"The addition of B'Cuzz positive microorganisms to the substrate guarantees that soil diseases have absolutely no chance of developing."
I've read somewhere that coir is treated with trichoderma sometimes. Is this true, or am I just being paranoid?
Thanks!

Hmmm... I'm afraid you may well have bought the wrong stuff for your cat to use on his casings Fanatek. I have heard similar things. I only have experience with "Bed-A-Beast" coir which works the way I said. To be on the safe side, go to Pet-Smart and get a brick of "Bed-A-Beast" $4.95.
Or, you could have your cat do a small casing with that stuff pasturized or sterilized and see what happens. I wouldn't use it as is though.

I used to think so to.....not any more! I bought a brand new brick of Coco Coir. My kitchen was clean....as always. I opened the sealed package....soaked the Coco Coir. Then applied the Coco Coir to my fully colonized horse poo. I got GREEN in 4 fucking casings of my Keepers Creepers!!!! I will never again use Coco Coir without treating it.....EVER!!!!
Just thought you might like to know!

Just nuke it, not going to do any harm nuking it. Rather be safe than sorry. I personally haven`t ever worried about sterilising my coir and I`ve not had contamination on my casings. I am however going to start sterilising the coir for my bulk substrates, too much to loose in my opinion.

WOW!! That must be a fluke of some kind. Maybe your water had contams, or the bucket or something because I've been using it untreated with no problems and so has our ill-fated friend bassplayer74 (lost his cable connection) who turned me onto the tek in the first place.
I much prefer vermiculite for casing now anyway, so I haven't used coir in a while, but never had a case of the nasties with it when I did.
Sorry to hear about your misfortune Road. That really sucks. When did that happen?

I used bed-a-beast also. I mixed it with vermiculite and nuked it for 10min.

I buy purified water. I have a sterile kitchen. I spray the room with Lysol. I clean my mixing bowl with Alcohol. I wash my hands with anti-bacterial soap. I am almost anal....ask pleezr....lolzz
It aint no fluke. the Coco Coir had a contam....I know this for a fact! I had left over Coco Coir in the bowl and left it in the oven when I was done.......it got the Green growing in it too!!!! My oven is cleaner than anything.....self cleaning oven.....then I wipe it down.
Yes losing 4 casings sucks big time! Probably Karma kicking in for spreading the Keepers Creeper into the community. lolzzz

Well, those are the breaks when using a natural product, I suppose. Anything semi-nutritive that comes from outdoors is going to run the risk of carrying with it things that like to eat it.
My cat mostly filled a mixing bowl with coir, dumped in about a cup or so or vermiculite to (according to him) improve the structure, and a couple tablespoons of oyster shell. He then did a microwave pasteurization for 10 minutes on high. It's a strong nuker, and it was too hot to touch when it came out.
I suppose we'll find out if it worked in a few days, huh? Everyone keep your relative appendages crossed for us!

Wa-La ... but be on the safe side throw out that funky coir you brought ... go to petsmart/petshop/petland whatever and get some bed-a-breast ... and nuke it if you feel safer ...

I too have gotten green mold every time I used my coco coir straight off the brick soaked in some water. I would get green mold during and right after my first flush. Now this last time I sterilized some in my pc in 4 quart jars and so far I dont have any green mold. Im finally going to see a second flush.

It is very odd... I have read posts from people claiming that if they do not sterilize the coir, they contaminate. I have read an equal number of posts from people claiming that if they do sterilize they contaminate. I did some tests way back and couldn't get repeatable results. My advice is to try it one way and if it works stick with it. If it doesn't work, switch and see if that helps.

I used to get green and cobweb all the fucking time with coir - regardless of weather I PC'd it or not (and yes even the left over coir would contam on its own). I determined that my coir was too moist. I now squeeze it as hard as humanly possible so there is no drip and lightly sprinkle it over my casing. Since that small change I now get rapid colonization and zero contams. I don't even sterilize the coir anymore: just soak it in mountain spring water, wash hands, grab some, squeeze, and apply. For me at least moisture level was a hugh factor. By the way - the coir wasn't as wet as many of you might be thinking, even when I was getting contams I was squeezing most of the moisture out, just not enough.

The raccoon simply pasturizes coir -- wet -- in a pot on the stove. He just adds water until it is a moist steamy mass. Then -- lets it simmer a while. Nada problem -- yet (tiny raccoon fingers crosssed). 6T

Hmm... I had the same problem with coco coir in the brick. I rehydrated and got very lovely contams. Im 99% sure it was the coco, since I fruited one without the coco, just vermie.
