hope someone can help me with this question I have ? I will be attemping the mono tub stye and and gonna try to follow RR tek for grain spawning but one question remains he has 1 of 2 parts I will be following, the tyvek or the polly fill lid one, how does one see the holes after the PC if the holes are covered with tyvek ? can I put that polly fill in the PC too ? I have no access to buy the rubber ports, oh ya is sylicone just as good as tyvek and polly fill, I know would have to get sylicone for high temp at least 400 dgrees right? thank you in advance

Regular silicone works. you will still need a gas exchange port though. I would use polyfil for that.

use 2 holes, one covered with silicone for your injection port
and the other either stuff with polyfil or put tyvek under the lid.. so you have your injection port plus a filtered hole for GE

Tyvek under the lid is going to get pierced with a needle.

Hi there, I'm relatively noob as well here. This all looks amazing. . But it does seem like you need to put in a lotta time for it to pay off. I always use grow kits. Just order 'em through www.shayanashop.be and that's it. Maximum yield for a minimum of time. easy peasy. I understand the real mycologist likes to kick it up a knotch, but after reading this I think I'll stick to my growkits...

psycho, its actually really easy once you understand how its done...learning how to do it correctly is the problem with all the outdated tek's, and all the ppl giving bad advice.
stick around and read a bit, you'll figure out the right way to do it and be glad you did....and never use a kit again

look at my journal for ideas regarding grow kits. I only used some parts of the kit, and ended up buying all the other pieces. Most kits are incomplete and over priced:(

So i inoculated my jars yesterday and I'm looking at how to make a shotgun terrarium. It says to use a 1/4 in. drill bit to drill holes on all sides. The perlite i bought is pretty fine and I'm thinking that its just going to end up leaking all over the floor. Will the perlite stay in the terrarium when wet or should i try using smaller holes?

1/4 inch holes are right. Just make sure you make less holes instead of more. You can always drill more holes if needed. Otherwise you may end up putting tape over some of the holes like I did:/
The pearlite should be just wet enough that water doesn't pour out. Some may fall out, but it's pretty clean overall. I might have enough spillage (pearlite) to fill a water bottle cap.
Also, make sure you don;t crack your container when drilling. I ruined 2 different fruiting chambers that way. One little pressure crack, and the whole tub will break.

Honestly, the price differential of DIY compared to growkits for yield is the reason why I grow my own, in dedicating 2 hours to set up and negligible time in the interim, I yield much more than a growkit does for a fraction of the price.
