hollow stems, that go up through the cap, usually its from fruiting in warmer conditions (78+F).
drop your fruiting temps by 5-10 degrees or so if thats the case, you will notice the density difference.
here is a reference I use for the lower fruiting temps.

Peat moss is non-nutritions and is best to confine it's use in Mycology to casing layer applications only.
For a bulk substrate, use pure coco coir or any other of the recommended bulk substrate materials used in Mycology such as field aged horse and cow manure and wheat straw. The best mushroom substrates are a well balanced mix of as many bulk substrate materials and additives you can use at once to comprise one single substrate out of.

monkiman said: i found some millet at the pet shop will it be ok to just use that?
Millet is hollow thus carrying the least amount of nutrients than any other of the seeds used to run spawn out on. I like to add a meatier seed to just millet like rye, wheat, or milo to puff up the nutritional content of the grain spawn or just bye bags of pre mixed premium bird seed.

$6.99 a 3-pk with $5.99 flat rate shipping no matter how much you buy.
Hey there. Right now ThePetGuys have the best deal on online order-able coir.
They don't have a flat rate shipping like Dr.foster's but their coir is $3.98 a 3 pack and orders from them are cheaper than fosters by a few dollars. The more you order, the more you save.

only certain brands, I dont know which ones though.
Brands of coir that are sold in potting soil bags as an alternative to potting soil are the brands of coir that'r treated with tricoderma. Trichoderma is a beneficial microbe for the development of roots and soil activity for plants.
Brands of coco coir sold in the block form are usually untreated with trichoderma unless otherwise labeled on the packaging. As a precautionary measure, when using coir as a bulk substrate material, I be sure to buy coco coir that's intended purposes are for reptile bedding. Better safe than sorry.

hi there, i am just wanting some confirmation on the method i will be using to prepare my rye grain jars. i rinsed and soaked the rye for 24 hrs, then i am planning to pour the water off and put the rye into a pot with some fresh water so the rye is covered by about two inches, then slowly bring to just under boiling and simmer for 45 mins. i will then strain and rinse with cool water and let it sit in strainer for about 20 mins to dry well. then load the jars 3/4 full, put lids on loosely, cover with tin foil and pc for 60 mins, let jars cool for about 5 hours and inoculate.
i have to somehow make lids with the one piece lids that i have, so i was thinking of just making one big hole for GE and a smaller one for inoculation and then putting tyvek over the the jar and then screwing the predrilled one piece lid on. thanks in advance.

Prep your rye like this.
He shows how to make lids too.
You can either make a hole just for GE, or make two and cover one with silicone for an injection port.
If you only have one how for GE and still want to inject you can inject and cover the hole with micropore tape, or remove the lid and squirt into the jar.
Hope this helps.

If you did not see burst berries, then you are fine. (even better as your berries are only better hydrated)
Take care,

let it drip/drain for an hour (so excess moisture doesnt pool up in the bottom of your tub when you do put it back in) then back into the tub to fruit.

dont rinse after the simmer, you need the grains hot so when you strain them the steam evaps off the grains as you toss and it dries through evaporation. when you rinse after the simmer your just getting the outside wetter and it takes longer to dry the outside of the grains.
then fill your jars 1/2 full cuz the grains will expand in the PC and be too full if you fill 3/4 full.
