I've decided to start growing again after a 5yr hiatus; well truth be told Mother Nature spiked my interest agian. See, it's been raining almost everyday for about 3-4 weeks now here is the Southeast (Atlanta is now the new Seattle), and the fields have been absolutely covered. But that's completely off subject.

I've been researching on the net and [finally] become a member on this site. I now think I can make this work, as my first few attempts had less that desirable results. I was putting in so much work trying to keep conditions perfect, and after contams and poor yields only getting about 25% of what I should have gotten. So to the point, invigorating read, but I do have one suggestion. I see almost no mention of sterilization techniques. While you do mention the pressure cooker; you in no way mention how it should be used. If you intend for this to be guide for beginners I feel that such is vital information.

The link on grain preparation methods has instructions on sterilization times, etc. This is not intended as a guide to everything, just a way to get people to understand basic concepts, understand the way things are dona and supply some links to reading material.

There are so many different ways to do the same thing and it is up to the individual grower which to use. This is why I avoided giving specific instructions and just gave links (so a new grower can read and choose which one he likes) and only gave some general tips on each procedure.

where's a definitive debate/discussion on whether you should start with cakes or grains/bulk?

There is no definitive answer.

It is very much up to the person. Are you prepared to put in the extra effort of researching all the additional techniques? Are you comfortable with and understand fully the procedures required? Do you have the extra money that is needed? Are you a clean, methodic person or at least have the capability to be so when needed?

If you can answer yes to most of these questions you are probably the kind of person that will succeed with bulk first time off.

Im wondering if anyone can give me some tips. I have a home setup in which you should be able to see the picture. My first flush came in real nice but I staggered the cakes so hopefully I could have a revolving schedule. I have noticed, it seems that the fruiting process did not begin on newer cakes and growth significantly reduced. I used Pf tek, with large fruiting chamber and heating pad. my thermo and humidity gauge are garbage but theyll be replaced. if you could take a look and let me know what may be causing this decrease in growth i would be very appreciative. Also any suggestions on preservation, drying, and minimal loss of potency????

Pic1: Topview of FC, should I cut and place plexiglass????? does chamber need holes for ventilation???
Pic2: Topview between container and light.(just an aqurium light for cichlids, is this is ok?
pic3: inside of fc (topview), cakes lay upon wire meshing cage, cage lay upon 1/2" layer of perlite. perlite has been soaked enough to where no free standing puddles exist. i have a feeling chamber may be to much. bottom left corner is thermo, and humidity gauge.pay no mind, im going digital as soon as i get money.
PIC4: Comfort heating pad for pulled muscles... lay under chamber. not sure if its keeping the temp i need. the bottom of chamber stays warm but thats all i can tell, may change that setup as well. thanks for taking the time to look.

I dont understand why you would have a heater in your FC?  Is it cold in your house?  I beleive cubes fruit best at about 74 degrees.  Also what about FAE?  I dont see any holes anywhere.  I dont see a problem with the light.  any other questions you can pm me if you want.

i have the FC in my garage since that is kinda my own personal space and the garage floor is kinda cold. Im pretty sure you are right about the temps on cubes. I m gonna turn it off and take temps and see where im at. no holes because i usually open it to fan out and for like 20 -30 seconds. i do that twice a day. should i have vent holes?  thanks for the video link

Remember, drill all sides of the container. A lot of people forget to drill the bottom holes. They're required to bring moisture up into the container from the wet perlite.

*sigh* No results so far... [Re: 13shrooms]
    #11174592 - 10/03/09 12:04 PM (1 month, 17 days ago)

I inoculated my jars on Monday, and it's been nearly a week, and I see nothing.  I was thinking the room temp was just too cold, 63-65ish (I keep the apartment kinda chilly).  I am trying to get the heat up a bit-- but is it too late even though I've seen no results this far along?  Any advice would be great!

if your still waiting on germination then I would get temps up around 75F then once your fruiting you can lower your temps.
you will be fine colder temps just slow everything down.

If you must keep your environment cooler then place your jars up near the ceiling. At the top of a closet shelf or something. It's probably ten degrees warmer up there.

So I am still wondering, I set my cakes on a revolving schedule and some flushed out(not nearly as many as I thought) but then some of the cakes have been in there for about a week and no pins. I noticed that there is a pin with mycelium growth on the cap. from my understanding this is an indication of too much humidity??? is this true. whats going on? how long does it take for second flush to hit, and does the cakes bruising affect the growth?
