Linux distros
    #9143727 - 10/27/08 05:28 PM (3 years, 6 months ago)

Which do you use and why?

I have tried out a few, ubuntu, kubuntu, gentoo, and pclinuxos.  Right now I am running on gentoo, but am really starting to tire of it already.  It still feels clunky to me for some reason, and sadly, things like browsing the net, watching videos (flash and other) are faster for me on windows.  Plus, my firefox tends to segfault a lot on videos, and segfaults quite a bit too.  I do love how customizable it is however, and really like portage, it is a great package manager.  I am starting to feel like i spend more time working on it, figuring out how to get a certain program to work, figuring out why something won't compile, etc. than actually using and enjoying my computer.

I really liked ubuntu/kubuntu, as both just flat out worked for me without major problems.  They were very stable, fast, and user friendly.  While user friendly isn't a huge one for me, as I know computers quite well, it is a good perk as it makes it where I can use the system and not have to work on it all day.

My favorite so far was PCLinuxOS, i really liked this distro, it was extremely stable, fast and lightweight (even though it did run kde by default).  It was also very easy to use, and right off the bat I was up and running.  It is still my favorite, and would probably be using it now if the live cd had a kernel that would support my hdd, as it will not mount and is unusable, at least the default, on my newest computer.

Forgot one, Linux Mint, I also liked it, it was practically ready to go right out of the box, kind of like windows in the linux world.  I may even try this one again, as I only used it for a short time, though i think i will go with something new.

So, im kind of looking for a new distro to try, as I like to tinker around with them, I'm debating between slackware and archlinux right now, but am more than open to other distros as well.  So which do you guys use and why?

peace

Debian is what ubuntu is based on, but no one should convince you of a distro, I used debian for a long time and then windows. I switched to ubuntu recently when I ran into a virus and just didn't feel like configuring things with debian, if you have time debian is great.

I use mepis, its great for what i want, incredibly stable, (though now i'm using mepis8 beta which is still in testing)

Some distros require more work than others to configure. Ubuntu is definately good straight up. Suse had promise but it only reminded me of why i left windows.

I use slackware, and only slackware. I haven't used windows for a few years now.

To be honest the reason I use it is really historical... Slackware was one of the first (if not the first) to have good support for SATA drives. Later when other distros caught up I tried them but they were too slow and too unstable.

Slackware is stable and fast... that is why I like it. I am running 12.1 right now and I didn't even need a custom kernel (like I did pre slackware 11)

Also Slackware is the oldest Linux distro. I like it so much I have a slackware hat and bumper stickers.

See I have issues with most kernels, as they have issues with my video card, ATI radeon 9250 PCI, and will only work with my default onboard intel video, no matter what I do.

I remember my stack of 64 1.44M floppy disks that contained slackware back in the early 90's.  Amazing how much things have changed since then... and how much then had changed since I got into computers (back when 64k, not meg, was an enormous amount of memory!)

That card hard issues with propriety windows drivers, let alone linux, i used to have one. Got it running alright under the xorg drivers with some tweaking, but its been a while so i can't remember what i did, in terms of 3d gaming the biggest problem i had resolving was with textures exceeding certain sizes and the actual rendering and clarity of the textures.. otherwise nexuiz, tremulous, sauerbraten etc worked fine without crashes.

You can try getting the 8.28 xorg drivers for that card (as i think this is the last version to actually support it) get it from the ati support site and then installing through the console choosing your distro version as an argument (there are guides for this online) (as the gui probably wont come up at all - thats what happened to me) then its likely that you have no x. so you have to reconfigure the xorg-xserver i think (guides are online for ones distro) for your drivers and monitor.
Yes this card is a prick of a thing...
It will show as a 9200 not a 9250, but it works more or less the same...buggy.

or better still, save for a better graphics card and make sure its still supported (most nvidia from the last 6 years are still good)

linux mint is nice.  it is based on ubuntu, but has restricted drivers and codecs + a bunch of cool programs.  it's also highly rated by distro watch, so they must be doing something right.

yeah, ive used mint, it was nice.

So, i have now installed Arch, and found the install process much easier than gentoo.  Also, it only took me about an hour to get arch installed, X installed and configured and working, plus get kde4 up and running, which is much better than the week it takes to do on gentoo.  Plus, it already feels more stable, as my firefox has not had a segfault yet, though I am having problems getting flash installed and working.

I can't give it all the credit, gentoo did help teach me how to configure my xorg.conf, so that made it much easier, however, so far, i like it.  Keepp the recomendations coming, as I will probably keep trying some out, then come back to the one i like the most.

peace

i use gentoo. i prefer gentoo, mainly because it is what i am familiar with. i started using it 7 or 8 years ago. i'm used to the tools gentoo offers. i've tried a bunch of other distros but always come back to gentoo. the main problem i have is nsplginwrapper not releasing the sound after i watch a flash video, but i hear this is happening across a lot of updating distros so, i assume, it is a problem with that one bit of code.

Yeah, i just started using it today, so no telling, i could always end up back, but so far I'm liking it...

Ubuntu is great only because you can usually install and not need to search for fixing xorg, etc. Debian is great when you have the time to install everything yourself though.

Eventually I think ubuntu will become prominent enough to make a larger share of desktops linux.

ubuntu definitely is nice for its install and go usability, though it is quite loaded down with crap right from the get go.  For some reason, im on a minimalist kick right now, and only want to install what I need to use.

However, Im stuck a little right now, as both archlinux.org and their forums/wikis are all down right now, its odd, considering all of gentoo did the same thing not but 2 weeks ago.

peace

Gentoo, but its being a cunt with my external soundcard & sound in flash videos.

This precise moment in time I'm using vista, so I watch tv on the internet .

I havent used slackware in years, but I've heard its turned into a pretty nice distro.

I've run the OSuse/SLES at a previous job - the only thing that really irked me was their insane package management process (YaST) always updated the cache before selection, which made a quick change take a lot longer some times.  The centralized administration via YaST was pretty cool though.

I'm a Debian/Ubuntu man for desktops & servers whenever I get the chance, however.  The colo I setup over the weekend is 100% ubuntu server, thought I'd give it a chance - as I normally use Debian for servers.

Cool, i really need to check out SuSE, as I have yet to try that one too.  Might be a while though, I am really digging Archlinux.  Everything works easily since it is mostly binary packages, but a few things I have already compiled and it has worked great.  Really easy to use the Arch Build System, and pacman is also a wonderful package manager IMO, plain, easy to use, and gets the job done without a hassle.  And with yaourt installed, you can get almost any program easily, and even automate downloading the source code, putting all files int he right place, and installing them, with just a couple commands.

Yeah, it really has. Every release has been a noticeable improvement since I started using it with Slackware 9.0. Recently they switched to from a 2.4 to a 2.6 stock kernel with minimum fuss.

There may be better distros out there but for a speed/stability based distro I have invested so much time in it that it would be pointless to switch now.

It's fast and it's stable. That's all I want.

Nice, I'll be sure to check it out.  I do remember really liking it back in the days before I used linux regularly.  It was quite easy to get up and running with minimal knowledge, whereas my current favorite flavor (Debian) was horribly complicated at that point in time.
