Do you have..."goals?"
    #9120907 - 10/23/08 11:47 AM (15 years, 5 months ago)

My mom told me I need to start making short term goals.  Like every six months, make a list of goals to complete and then devote myself to getting them done.

I thought it was a pretty good suggestion, but I've seldom made a goal and stuck to it in my life, so I'm a little bit wary.

Do you guys have goal-setting suggestions?

Give yourself a reward or suggest your mom reward you when you complete those goals.

Set real goals that actually matter to YOU, and they will get done. If your mom's priority for you, for example, is to go to college or get a job in the next few months, and that simply isn't your life vision, then set a different goal. Maybe you want to set the world record from eating the most crab based hot dog substitutes in under 12 minutes, maybe you want to pour warm tapioca pudding on Donald Rumsfeld's head from a concealed location... set the goals that matter to you. My $.02...

This sounds pretty good to me.

And by that logic, Moth... you DO set goals, and you DO complete them. (For instance, your raw run.)

GreenGoat - that was hilarious!

JC - you're right, I do tend to meet goals if they are important to me.  I guess I would like to expand on my capacity to meet some goals.  I would like to have more goals to meet.  I'm trying to think positively about it.  It might help my confidence and self-worth if I met a few more goals.

I have a couple of long-term goals in life, but I guess only a couple end in concrete, tangible ways, whereas others are more philosophical. I want to be able to walk into a bookstore and find my novel(s) on a shelf, with my name printed along the spine.  I want to have children.  Those are the concrete ones. I want to be a loving human being and to inspire everyone I encounter, no matter in how small way.

In the short term I want to be more consistently creative and write more often. I want to not smoke pot. I want to move, most likely to Portland. (Which I almost mistyped as Potland. Ha ha.)

how about you write a poem a day, no matter how big or small... and whether you feel like writing or not.

or maybe save $20 from every paycheck, no matter how hard life is or what you have to go without. then your 6 month reward will be $520

Re: Do you have..."goals?" [Re: MOTH]
    #9121012 - 10/23/08 12:14 PM (15 years, 5 months ago)

I spent a good portion of my teenage years having self-help mantras crammed down my throat at the hands of my parents, (Mormon) boot camp staff, and "Family Therapists."

While I think the load of it was entirely unnecessary (I got in some intense arguments with the parents, but I was hormonal, and they're controlling folks), it's helped me be able to take the good with the bad.  Overall I think if you buy a Tony Robbins tape set and listen to it all the time to try to "learn to live life" you're an idiot, but there are some good things to be taken from it.

I think having goals that you formulate and state to yourself is a good idea.  Some people like to write it down, but I don't find it necessary.  Most days when I have stuff I need/want to get done I'll wake up and kinda run the mental checklist and think of how to get everything done in the day that I have to (which I'm failing miserably at right now, I'm squandering what should be a very busy day playing bass guitar and typing on the Shroomery).  I think with goals keeping them short term and achievable is a good way to get started.

If I recall correctly you don't smoke pot much, but I'll often say to myself, "Okay, get this and this and this done, then you can smoke a bowl" and you get that whole satisfaction of completing your stated goal and a little reward.  (again, currently failing miserably)  Find something that works for you.

It seems like sometimes you are a bit hard on yourself and question your abilities, but you're a very capable person.  The best thing that's going to help you complete the goals you come up with (and basically everything else in life) is confidence that you can.

My life got a lot better when I started setting goals.  Reaching the finish line feels great, but more importantly, it feels great to spend your time working towards them.  You can go to bed feeling good when you know you made progress.

Just make sure you define them well, and make short and long term ones.  And set deadlines; aim to finish each one early.

Whiskyclone: how do you "define a goal well?"  What does that mean, exactly?

How do I know if a deadline is the right amount of time set for the goal to be completed?

i have vague kind of general things i need and want but they seldom manifest as actual ¨goals¨

but yeah, it´s good to have some concrete direction, even if it´s a small thing...
i remember when i was back in tel-aviv i decided that i would sign up for Aikido and Yoga and try both of them out, i loved both but i could only stick with yoga and i did as much yoga as i possibly could, the rest of the time i had a feeling like i´m not accomplishing the rest of the stuff i need but i was able to forgive my self because i knew that at least i was going through with one thing that made me feel good!

When I was younger I had more specific goals (get a degree, publish X number of papers etc.).  As I grow older they get looser and looser.

My goal is to retire when I'm 50 then move to the netherlands and buy a house in the country with a windmill.  And grow a ton of opium poppies and nod off all day.

I mean you should decide specifically what the goal is, such that you can ask yourself "Have I completed this goal" and know instantly whether the answer is a yes or a no.  "Lose weight" isn't a well defined goal, but "lose six inches from my waist" is.

Trial and error, really

Envision how much time you'd have to spend each day, and how many days you'll be able to spend time on it, then add a little grace time.

My short term goal is to finish school. My long term goal is to get an ok job, and get back on opiates.

I do have goals.

Life seems meaningless without ambition to achieve something.  Most of my goals are big although I make up small ones everyday like I will do all my housework today.  Otherwise I just sit there on the computer, if I'm not at work...

My big goals are to play the music I produce at a club or at a festival and save enough $$$ to get a villa in Spain.  Also to invent a crazy new flying machine.

They are going well so far apart from the flying machine one.

I have a series of very vague goals that I haven't cemented into verbal form. Maybe that's why I don't make much progress.

Here are some short-term goals I recently added, though:

a. Find a new job, one that allows me to feel less stifled. Preferably one with dental insurance.

b. Get on a regular regimen with yoga.

The reward for these two goals is allowing myself to try smokin' the reefer again.

My long-term goals, which are fuzzy and mostly undefined include:

a) Getting a demo recorded

b) Buying one of those Bose L1 personal sound systems, so that I can start:

c) Playing out at small venues.

I guess all my long-term goals involve makin' music.
