ID request PNW find Black spore print
    #9082274 - 10/15/08 04:14 PM (15 years, 5 months ago)

Habitat:
Growing in wood chips in a shady conifer area.

Gills:
Gills are dark cocoa brown, adnexed,

Stem:
Around 5c give or take 2cm, around 3mm in diameter, tawney brown to white coloring, smooth hollow structure

Cap:
between 3-4cm wide, light tan interior browning darker towards the edges, meat of the cap is fairly thin, (about 1-2mm thick) ,cap is conical when young, turning widely convex with age to depressed and slightly wavey with age

Spore print color:
Spore print is VERY dark. Appears black.

Bruising:
Light brown bruising.

I found a decent sized field of these just on the edge of a park. I don't think they're cyans because the stem to cap ratio seems a little off on the younger specimines and the caps aren't as wavy or a caramel brown color. These are different from other LBMs I've been seeing around town so I thought I'd post them just for fun.

Those are definitely odd ducks.  Off the top of my head I can't say what they are.  Maybe a freakish Panaeolus.  Stems look too sturdy for a Psathyrella and they certainly aren't coprinoid.

Senor_hongos,

Yeah, If a small patch of these were growing near some cyans I can see how easily it would be to mix the two species together. The lack of bluing and not seeing an obvious purple-tint to the spore print points away from any active species that I know of. When I saw these I definitely didn't get a "holy shit! thar be some actives!" feeling. These were adjacent to several large patches of LBMs of varying species.

Why?  Process of elimination or hollow stem or both?

Habitat, print color, the look of the cap.

Usually Psathyrella has thin white stems but not always.

Wow, I looked up Psathyrella in Mushrooms Demystified. David Aurora seems to really dislike this Genus of mushrooms.
