Cubensis on wood chips.

I know. Not possible right? Has to be dung under there, right?
I don't know about that this time. There could have been dung here. It might not be Psilocybe cubensis. I would not be a scientific minded person if I said that I was certain of both of those facts to be true or false.
I don't have a spore print, but I can see purple spores on the edge of the cap where it is cracked, and faint spores on the "skirt". I can also see faint bluing on the mushroom, but it's not vibrant like some of the other specimens I've seen. The mushroom was not fresh, and was on the dry side, but it wasn't dried out or rotting either.
So you say cubes don't grow on wood, or this is another bluing Stropharius species. I could buy that. I really could. Except as far as wood goes, I saw cubensis mycellium in the mulch beds I took them out of last summer that was certainly colonizing wood chips along with whatever else was in the mulch (cow or horse dung) that gave it a start.
If it's another Stropharius species, then I can understand completely that I am wrong. I have pulled tons of sun baked cubes out of the mulch beds last year, and they look so much like this, it's not even a question of visual identification.
I'm not "wanting" this to be a cube. I don't need it to be. Those of you who know me know this.
I am saying we don't know absolutely everything about this species and whether or not it shares traits with other psilocybes as far as an affinity for, or at least the capability of, colonizing wood. I hypothesize that either P. cubensis is capable of consuming wood, or that some strains are evolving the capability.
The shitty thing about this is, I didn't take a pic of this in it's habitat, but I have pics of the habitat.
purple spores on the edge near the split...
Attached to a wood chip, wood attached at the base as well.
Spores on the skirt
bluing... hard to see but it's there
Habitat:
This is a bolete I found in the same area as the suspected P. cubensis. The substrate was the same wood chips this is found in. Of course, the Bolete is growing from the oak tree roots, but the substrate, the chips, are what the P. cubensis was growing from. There was no evidence of dung in these chips. These chips were not freshly laid down, either.
what do you think?

I think it's another motherfuckin' Tylopilus in your cube habitat.
Great job, PinheadX. I almost bumped your old thread but I am delighted to see this material revisited.
Looks like if you can't find 'em one way you'll find them the next.
Watch the patch, pick more and print them!
Right now I don't know what they are.

I just cut the cap off to do a spore print, and the stem is clearly bluing where it's cut. I don't know how, but it's a cube in a school playground growing on woodchips.
CRAZY

Only you, Pin, only you.
Now you have to find them growing on rocks.
Can't happen, right?
Think again.

heh. I thought boletes were mycorrhizal. Was there a root growing through that rock?

It looks like a cube to me o.0
I mean if I looked down and saw that I would be like, "Holy shit, is that a cube growing from wood chips?"

not yet. Gonna process them tonight. Slice the caps thin to dry them...

Not all Boletes are mycorrhizal and neither are Amanitas. This one, however, had a tree growing above it. I never saw the roots but I am sure they were there.
I seriously hope you get a print from those cubes or whatever they are. Inquiring scientists want to know.

I'm trying... I'll likely try to clone it too. Gotta make up some LC media.

I tried cultivating cubes on wood chips once; these were decorative woodchips, so not at all decayed. The mycelium colonized the chips, but ever so slowly, so I eventually gave up, although there was still growth and no contams. I can imagine that if the chips have decayed somewhat and nutrients were added, for example through additional soil or dung, cubes can actually fruit using wood chips as substrate.

I saw that. I don't think it's the same thing, but it's the same as the pins I found at the playground where this cube was found.
habitat schmabitat...
