Just went for a wander with my dog on some grassland in the Lincoln City area. Didn't look too hard as the grass was long and wet but did find a single Lib! I can't believe they have come so early, I only started to find them at the very end of September last year!

I will have to have a proper look tommorow morning. On a side note loads of Conocybe albipes and another Conocybe species i'm not sure about around, along with some Inocybe and Pan Foes + Pan sphinctrinus. No Amanitas though.

So do you make special journeys to the peak district then? I'm from a village where I'm the only one who knows about this patch, pretty damn good!

yup, its a bit of a trek but well worth it for the amount of mush i find!
it's a relatively exclusive spot too, only seen a handful of other pickers there in the 7 or 8 years i have picked those fields...
theres like 50+ acres of prime habitat so when one field doesn't fruit there are always another 10 to check out :yesnod:
i made friends with the farmer also so i don't have to worry about getting kicked off

i'm surprised that you have found any so early, despite the amount of rain we have had the temps haven't been exactly perfect

anyway despite these earlier than usual reports i'm still going to hang fire for a few weeks and wait for those cool misty autumn nights to roll in...

That's extremely lucky that the farmer gives you permission, how easy can it be?!!

I'm still amazed at the amount, never seen that much before. I need to look around for different places myself but I'm always too lazy and stick to the same old loyal patch!

lol i spent the first 5 seasons doing my best to avoid him...
then one day he cornered me in a field that had stone walls so i couldn't get out without fucking the wall up...

so i just stood my ground and he came over in his tratter, he was cool, he knew exactly what i was doing and didn't care...

in the 25 years he has worked that land he has has all sorts going there to pick, he reckons it isn't bad for the animals out on the hills to get used to having some humans around them, it is easier for him to get his sheep in come winter, so in a round about way i'm doing him a favour...

to be honest i couldn't shut him up that day, talked to me for well over half an hour about mushrooms and farming and shit...
now he comes and says hello or gives a friendly wave from his truck every time i see him

and i take him a bottle of whiskey to say thanks on my last pick of the year to keep him sweet

didn't talk to him last year, i wanted to because i left him some dried shrooms with his whiskey and instructions on how to use them the previous year and i want to know if he tried them!

i think farmers have a bad reputation in general and are not as stingy as most people think, so long as you respect their land then they are usually ok :yesnod:

:rofl2:

Oh, what a lovely gesture  that's really thoughtful to do something like that. I bet he'll want you back again more often

Your experience reminded me of one of my own a few days back; I was in a field (very large and was occupied by three horses who didn't take any notice of me) looking for libs. The chances were slim as I'd never previously looked in this field and the season is relatively early.

Anyway, after about an hour looking around hopelessly, I found nothing apart from a tonne of hay caps :frown: -them things can be a real pain.

After giving up I made my way to the barbed wire fence to get back out and two women pulled up on horses. I had to think fast and quickly explained that I'd lost my dog. I went into great improvised detail! They even took my mob number to contact me if they'd see him. I text her back a while later telling her I found him.
But I really did have to think fast...

A question to anyone; do you pick pin heads? They seem pointless to me to pick, I'd rather leave them to grow up a bit and pick the daddies later on.

Fair enough considering the trip you have to make!

Not normally, but sometimes I have found pinheads that are completely blue, these look dandy so I will nab a few

Personally, I try to leave pins. As was said, it seems pretty pointless grabbing them at that size.

i leave them also, even though i'm not likely to be back at my spot the next day to pick them, you gotta let them grow up and drop their spores at least :yesnod:

I have to agree. Even though it's unlikely you'll be back to reap the rewards, it still feels like the right thing to do.
