a hippie commune

Some of you are familiar with my situation. 3 kids, and pregnant. Caught up in a ridiculously rough relationship. Well, I've been trying to figure what my next step should be. I'm broke, no job, and no family to speak of to help us, so my options seemed pretty limited.
Determined not to give up hope, I have been seeking out less common ways of living, and I was reminded of Berea College in KY by a friend here at the shroomery. unfortunately, they are full up until the fall of '09, so I have a while to wait on that one to say the least. But when i contacted them, they suggested I try out Dancing Rabbit Ecovillage in the meantime while I wait to go there.
I gotta admit it seems like a hippie fuckin dream come true, so I wrote them a letter, and am waiting to hear back from them.
What do you guys think of commune living? Am I in for a big surprise?

What exactly would you do while living there? Do you work there and they provide you with food and shelter? What about your kids? Any chance of health insurance?

Have you checked into gov't assistance. I know our county has programs for mothers who are in shitty relationships (e.g., abusive). You might check them out. I know the mothers get first priority compared to the other "homeless" people - and our county does a good job of trying to get you back into society.
What county do you live in? State?

What exactly would you do while living there? Do you work there and they provide you with food and shelter? What about your kids? Any chance of health insurance? Well, I'd work 40 hours a week, (including dishes and childcare type of work that is not usually compensated for in mainstream culture) My kids are as welcome as anyone else, and I don't know about the health insurance, but considering I have none right now, that isn't a top priority anyhow. And yeah, food and shelter, and environmental education are provided at no cost.
Have you checked into gov't assistance.
Gov't assistance is joke!! The maximum amount for a single parent of three is 287 dollars a month, here in Missouri.
If I was going to do that I'd have to go live at the damned domestic violence shelter. Don't get me wrong, it's awesome that such a resource is available, but I am not in a violent relationship, and I am not the kind of person who can live under the watchful eye of their psychologist.
She kept telling me that marijuana has affected my self-esteem so badly that I accepted being abused because I am addicted to it. (if it weren't for fucking pot, I prolly would have given up on life completely.) I went there for a couple weeks, and decided it was better back at home.

What did you do for work before becoming unemployed? Why not go back to that? Whatever you decide I hope it works out for you. The commune doesn't seem too bad.

I worked at an independent care facility for profoundly mentally retarded adults, and I was a bartender on the weekends. Also, I WAS going to college, before Douchey decided to start neglecting my kids while I was going, and had to drop out. I would go back to work, at the bar, if I had adequate childcare, but the ICF isn't an option while I am pregnant, as there are some serious hazards there.

If I was in your situation drugs would be the first thing to go. They WILL lower your ambition, and if your already feeling overwhelmed and depressed they will likely make those feelings worse. I think you should get clean and get a job.

I agree with that ^^
Making excuses to justify your drug addiction will not help anything. Likewise, attempting to run away from your problems wont solve anything because they are your problems and they will follow you no matter where you go.

Get a job at a childcare facility. Bring your kids to work with you. Since you already have experience working at a care facility it shouldn't be too hard to get the job. Unless you don't like working with children, but with three kids and one on the way you probably love kids.

They're having an open house on Saturday, I would check it out if at all possible. I really like their rocket stove. If they're hippies at all, they look like smart hippies! Those are the good ones.

the government won't help you at all
most likely take your children away if anything
don't know much about communes, or this one in particular.
But if they are legit (u can leave anytime, ect)
then it seems like a decent option for u

There are more than just one commune around this (MO) area.
Check out the website - thefec.org
Pick your favorite.
If that fails, you could come live with me I'm nice but I'd get your children drunk for fun <3
I plan on either joining or starting a 'commune' or intentional community someday. I'm gonna get a good job and buy lots of good land. That's the plan, stan.
So I say go for it. And check out that website. It'll open up your options.
ALSO!!! If anybody would like some little weiners, I have some left over from dinner last night. They have barbecue sauce.

I think you are going to eventually have to pay to stay at the rabbit place.

I don't think there's anything wrong with cutting things off and starting brand new. I say go for it, but do some heavy research before you commit.
