what would cause my hard drive to fill up constantly?
    #8719671 - 08/03/08 02:59 PM (6 years, 2 months ago)

hey, I was wondering if anyone would know why this is happening,

I have a near full hard drive, lately it has been filling up, and I delete the temporary internet files constantly. Just yesterday I was able to get rid of some other crap, to free up 980 megs, and I figured that would give me room for the temp internet files, but after I delete them my hard drive is now at 381, its like the space is not being freed up, or not completely.

what would cause this? I can't seem to think of anything.

Make sure that system restore points are off.  Also, this probably should have been in sci and tech

Yes, turn it off completely.

Do a virus scan as well, virus's are known to replicate files and can fill up a HD.

Either than that, if nothing's funny, time for a new, bigger drive or an external.

You are clearing the temp internet files either while the browser is still open, which then clears everything, but what your looking at, and If you load any pages from shroomery, every avatar, pic and sig pic reloads to the temp internet files.
Also clear all cookies, that could help too.
980 mb really isnt much space anymore, I can actually remember my first computer (post Apple2e+) I had bought a 870mb HD and thought that was huge and that I would "never" need another HD...LOL
cpu now holds 2.5tb, and I still have 2tb worth of external HD's

Instead of clearint temp internet files, try clearing off some old useless programs, or some of the old porn that your tired of;)
Aftyerall... Porn is really only good the first time round:grin:

Really?  I'll toss my 100s soon if that's the case, and bring my total up to 2.1t

I'm already thinking of junk I can fill that kind of space with.

Seriously, hd space is much more important to me than closet space.

Another possibility is that your page file is managed by Windows and it grows and shrinks according to memory usage. Have to tried restarting to see if the amount of space changes?

Page filing usually (unless the settings are finagled with) is a set size and usually equal to 1 and a half times your amount of Physical RAM. You can also Increase or decrease this number to better allow for performance of the CPU.
Right Click "My Computer"
Properties
"Advanced" tab
Under "Performance", click the "Settings" button
"Advance" tab
"Virtual Memory" click Change button

I believe the maximum setting for Windows XP is 3072mb or 3gb regardless of system RAM

I'm running XP with 2 gigs of RAM so I just turned my page file off. Things seem much speedier with it off.

i also turned off my page file, but i did read somewhere that even with it off, windows will still write swap data to the hdd instead of ram, even if there is room.  Pretty fucking stupid, but what do you expect from Winblows.

peace

Wow. You guys really turn them off and experience an increase? because IME I have always had a better luck by setting the paging file to the maximum allowable on all drives.
I always thought of it as like having 5+gb of ram onboard in my CPU.
