Ah, I wasn't aware of that. Maybe I should stop in my local store and check the inventory.
When you say blank, do you mean just a blank piece of silver, or you mean it has the mint mark and weight, just not a currency value?

yeah when I say blanks they do have markings on them.
The one that I am playing with right now is about 1.5 inches long .75 inches tall and about as thick as a silver dollar. There is a clear edging and a design on the front and back. A mint mark is one the back and it says international trade unit one troy ounce.
If I can find my camera then I will edit this post with a pic.
Im not sure if all coin shops do this, but the first time I was in there i was shopping around in a big ass bowl of blanks looking for some cool ones and they told me that cash purchases were tax free

That's interesting. I wonder how taxes are evaded. It makes sense, though, silver is, or should be, considered as money, so you're just turning your money into another form. Of course, it could also be considered a commodity like oil, which we all know is far from tax-free.
Actually, I'm pretty sure I have those international trade unit bars. I have quite a bit of art-bars lying around, too, but the one thing I got concerned about was the purity of the silver and the validity of the assayer that created the bars. Unlike a trusted name like Englehard or a government mint, I didn't know the producer of a lot of those bars, so I stopped buying them. I don't know if this is an issue or not.

Im not worried about the purity because if word got out that a coin dealer is selling bunk blanks, then they would lose all credibality, and thats all they have to trade on.
Also ive melted a few and given them to a jewler and had him run whatever tests he ran and he to me that it was in fact .999 pure silver.

Nothing can ever be 100% pure.
Pure silver according to the trade is 999, Silver Maples are 9999.

i have always wondered why they dont tax pure silver.
does anyone know the actual reason?
changing over to another form of money doesn't seem make sense because 90% junk silver, or collector coins are also money, but it is taxed.
