The only outdoor cyan patch I've created did fairly well.

I did the standard stuff. Dig a hole, dumped colonized chips in the hole. Then on top of that I added a mixture of woodchips and soil (50/50) with some grass seed mixed in. Covered that with a thin layer of new chips.

The grass seems to help hold in moisture during the summer and helps to create a nice micro-climate during the fall.

The grass can also be an indicator of over-dryness. If the grass starts to wilt or die from being too dry then its obviously time to water.

Other things that you can try,

Plant peppermint, runs though and grows up through the chips and adds shade, mushrooms begin fruiting near the dirt edge, but work their way all over the patch.

Lay small branches, like 2 inches in circumference on the patch, it will fruit beside the branches.

What Anno said, leaves and debris make an nice casing to keep the humidity up.

Course, they do love dirt and channels seems like a great idea.

439 days after the fact, an update!

Fall 2008 went fruitlessly by, save for a single small shroom. This was more or less expected as the patch was made late and in a 1:10 ratio.

There were humidity issues, my fairy godmother discovered to her dismay some chips were naturally too wet to colonize.

My fairy godmother expected this year to go fruitlessly by, given that a few liters of substrate were taken from the patch to start pilot patches in a friends garden, and this revealed too high humidity.

But lo and behold! Today my fairy godmother discovered by chance that 85 Cyanescens were showing their wavy caramel heads - assuring the needs for the coming year are met!

Some soil was sprinkled over the patch rather than making trenches. Growth was still around the edges but a few daring mushrooms popped up as far as 7" from the edge. Wavy Caps seem to like moss association.

One mushroom was ripe for cutting (cap wavy but plane). It was associated with a cluster on the edge, its cap measured 5cm/2" across and freshly picked weighed in at 7.33 grams.

Behold some pics shot with CrapCamTM technology

Congrats!

Keep adding new chips every year and they should keep returning.

The main part of my fairy godmothers patch is 8 inches thick. This was done deliberately to create a reservoir of spawn which will be used to expand on the patch coming spring.

She didnt expect the patch to fruit this year though, taking care of all personal needs for the coming year.
