ID request - Florida - edible boletes?
    #8530015 - 06/16/08 01:00 PM (6 years, 2 months ago)

Hey Alan and or CureCat and others,

I just picked these on property where I work.  They look like edible boletes that Alan (I believe) posted recently.  Please let me know if they are edible?
If they are edible a quick cooking tip is much appreciated.  I have them right beside me - so I can take more pics if need be.

Thanks in advance.

It's in a new home community so the single tree that it was under was only about 8 to 10 feet high...I checked with someone in infrastructure who told me the street trees were 90% nuttal oak and this was under a street tree growing out of mulch.
I hope that helps.
Are they good to eat?

Hard to say without first determining which species they are.

Would you say those stains are bluish?

I just used a fingertip to touch the underside of the cap of 2 of them and they immediately bruised bluish-green - instantly where I touched them.

This is a very complex genera of boletes. Alot stain blue, and look similar. Could be a number of species- some are good edibles some are reportedly poisonous. Be careful! Hopefully someone will help you out. Did you taste a small piece?

I just pinched a piece off of one on the back of my tongue and it tasted mushroom fleshy, non-acidic.  It tasted like a mushroom   I spit it out and did not eat it.

It looks a lot like Boletus chrysenteron, which does occur under Oak.

There are some toxic blue staining Boletes though, be absolutely sure before you eat it.

I was thinking the same thing since B. chrysenteron seems to be so common.  The thickness of the stipe concerned me though.

Yea these mushrooms look a little meatier than B. chrysenteron.  There are many species that look almost the same.
