yerba mate as fruiting substrate
    #8439952 - 05/24/08 11:42 AM (15 years, 10 months ago)

i made my own spawn recipe: poplar sawdust and used yerba mate 50/50. i will inoculate with oysters grain tomorrow.

let's see how works!

i use yerba mate residues as additive to grain with good results, the mycelium colonize yerba without problems

What is your reasoning for using yerba mate? Just curious

probably uses it as a tea, then doesn't want to discard the organic material

no experience with oysters, unfortunately,

however i used coir with yerba mate in place of coffee grounds once with a recognizable difference, however it was multispore.

have a look at my journal if interested,
and good luck!

Apparently spent coffee grounds is good added to waste for composting/garden rots; my family sometimes disposes of the spent grounds in the garden. However, I wouldn't advise the usage of non-spent, caffeine-laden coffee as a growth medium, since it is toxic to at least some plants (and fungi)?

Evidently the pathogen is either viral or bacteria; a lesser possibility would be another fungus, imo.  If it is away from other species that are growing I would just kept and eye on it and see what happens.

What kind of air exchange, Rh level, exposure to light?

The contamination, if that's what it is, might be from switching bags.  I've never tried that so I can't say how well it works.

the bag is at open air, temp around 15 degrees, RH fluctuates between 50-80%, 8 hs indirect sunlight. is interesting the hypoteses that switching bags. i do that many times without problems. i used yerba many times as additive without contams

I would try to think back if any factors were different this time.  Sometimes it is just bad luck.  Everything else sounds good though, Rh, air exchange, etc.

Keep an eye on it and let us know what happens.

well i seen it on wiki so take it with a grain of salt.  but after reading it i plan to be a bit more cautious about how much I drink until more info becomes available

here's the article i read

Quote:

In vivo and in vitro studies are showing yerba mate to exhibit significant cancer-fighting activity. Researchers at the University of Illinois (2005) found yerba mate to be "rich in phenolic constituents" and to "inhibit oral cancer cell proliferation" while it promoted proliferation of oral cancer cell lines at certain concentrations.[15]

On the other hand, a study by the International Agency for Research on Cancer showed a limited correlation between oral cancer and the drinking of hot mate (no data were collected on drinkers of cold mate). Given the influence of the temperature of water, as well as the lack of complete adjustment for age, alcohol consumption and smoking, the study concludes that mate is "not classifiable as to its carcinogenicity to humans".[16] Yerba mate consumption has been associated with increased incidence of bladder, esophageal, oral, squamous cell of the head and neck, and lung cancer.[17][18][19][20][21][22]

The pyrrolizidine alkaloids contained in mate tea are known to produce a rare condition of the liver, veno-occlusive disease, which produces liver failure due to progressive occlusion of the small venous channels in the liver. One fatal case has been reported in a young British woman who consumed very large quantities of mate tea from Paraguay.[23]

An August 11, 2005, United States patent application (documents #20050176777, #20030185908,[24] and #20020054926) cites yerba mate extract as a monoamine oxidase inhibitor; the maximal inhibition observed in vitro was 40–50%. MAOIs being antidepressants, there is speculation that this may contribute to the calming effect of yerba mate.[citation needed]

In addition, it has been noted by the U.S. Army Center for Health Promotion and Preventive Medicine that yerba mate can cause high blood pressure when used in conjunction with other MAO inhibitors (such as Nardil and Parnate).[25]

I wasn't sure if you had seen any of this or not so just thought i would let you know as it seems you drink alot of it

Re: yerba mate as fruiting substrate [Re: x7x_x7x]

i forget to update this post. i got some conclusions, here we go:

i find sawdust + yerba blocks contaminated with green molds and wet bubble disease, which is infrequent or no appear at all with plain sawdust blocks -in my experience-

on the other hand, yerba has been useful as spawn substrate, mixed with rye or other grains.

conclusion: yerba could be useful (as many other things are) as spawn additive, without proven positive or negative effects; on the other hand, perform poorly as fruiting substrate
