I thought it would be cool to have a pic thread that everyone could show their garden as it developes.
Here are some of my new pics...
My Jolokias, they are bigger now & growing like crazy, i moved them to the front of the house so they don't cross pollinate.
2nd generation of my prized cayennes, i started the mamas last year from seeds i got in a trade from here.
My papayas, grown from seed, doing well.
Tomato seedlings in various stages, over on the left are 2 kinds of eggplant.

yeah fort meyers is just south enough not to get frost, i lost a good amount of plants last winter, and i had a shit load in the house all over the place twice to save them, some i value more than others, at one point i began putting blankets over the platforms to save what i could, i think i got 5 nights of frost on various nights.

Ok, i have been working on this project for a few days now, i have felt for years that the land around me which is not being used should be farmed, i finally gave in......
So, there is this hill, next to my proprety, with alot of brizillian pepper trees growing wild, i decided to carve into the forest & make a space to grow.
So i Began to dig
I cleared alot of the trees, and began to dig alot.
I then built a walk way
Here is a better look. i am going to put all my tomato plants in there.

Hey lefty you've got some experience with herbs. My cilantro is going to seed. Does that mean it's no good anymore? Am I supposed to pull it up now?
I pulled some leaves up the other day but it tasted waaaayy too strong.

well funny thing actually, cilantro is one of the few things i have NOT grown. i did find this for you though:
Quote:
Cilantro is the most difficult herb to grow because it is so short lived and it needs cool temperatures to grow well. Many people think that they kill Cilantro because it doesn't last very long when they purchase plants at their local nursery. Cilantro will bolt (send up a flower stalk) as soon as the roots get above 75 degrees or so. This happens really quick in a small 3" pot in hot sun in a nursery yard. Many times the plant is already flowering at the larger warehouse type stores.
Cilantro needs to be grown in early spring or fall when the weather is cool. It requires mostly sunshine but can be grown in morning sun and shade in the hot afternoon. Growing it in the ground with mulch on top of the roots helps keep the soil cooler longer. With the best conditions Cilantro will last about 8-10 weeks before flowering. Once it does flower, it will make seeds which can be harvested as Coriander or replanted to grow more Cilantro plants.
Many people grow Cilantro by reseeding it every 3 weeks or so and have a patch growing all summer long. Planting it very close together shades the roots and helps keep it cool.
To harvest Cilantro, you can begin cutting as soon as the plant is about 6" tall by removing the outer leaves and leaving the growing point intact for the new leaves to grow from. Another method is to wait till the plant is almost completely grown and pull it up by its roots to use the whole bunch at once.
if youre looking for that same yummy cilantro flavor but would like a plant that doesnt run to flowering so quickly, try CULANTRO. otherwise youll need to repeatedly start new batches of it every few weeks.

Thanks, lefty!
My tomatoes are going to start bearing fruit soon, which is awesome considering the latest tomato scare. Self-sustainability FTW!
Quick question... I noticed your pepper plants were looking tall and robust. I've always had a problem with my pepper plants being short and wussy-looking. I was thinking I overwater them or something. What's your secret to great success?

well i think living in florida helps alot, other than that i just use good garden vegetable mix soil and water moderately, not too much. ive read they like to live on the verge of dry soil. now im just watering every other day or very lightly each day so the soil dries out a bit.
my cayennes are starting to get yellow leaves, i need to find a good organic fertilizer for them.
and yea, weve been getting some tomatoes here and there, when the other three bushes get bigger we should have a daily supply.

That's gotta be where I'm screwing up! I water my peppers just as much as my tomatoes. I'll try shunning them with my hose for a few days until they start looking thirsty and see how that does em.
As for your yellow leaves it sounds like either nitrogen or magnesium deficiency. I know I'm constantly plugging this stuff in this forum but you've gotta try putting some epsom salt (magnesium sulfate) on those bad boys and watch your leaves turn a deep, healthy green in no time at all.
I use this site to diagnose my mineral deficiency problems: http://www.hbci.com/~wenonah/min-def/list.htm
Enjoy your tomatoes, mang.

Lefty,
I use Alaska fish emolution $11.00 a gallon from walmart, it is organic, it takes a few days to break down & feed the plants but it holds them up good.
As far as cayennes go, it is a good thing to starve them a lil on nitrogen till the leaves yellow & then feed them & as well, let them dry out & then water them, this recreates their natural growing conditions & makes them hotter.

i gotta catch up with you guys, but im here now in Hawaii.
Maui on the east side up country(where things grow that wont grow anywhere else in the world)
ill get some pics up of the garden as it takes more shape.
you wouldnt believe the soil here! its all just decomposed foliage so its so rich and airy. the only draw back is that its about 50/50 soil:rock and some BIGGUNS at that.
heres a few pics of my little green house i cleaned and organized today.
gonna use the little pots for all kinds of starts(OPIONIONS ON WHICH ONES PLEASE) and the BIG pots are gonna be for my cacti.(pedros and torchs)
BTW, i need to start a bunch of loph seeds. that green house is too hot for this right?
so can i start them on my window sill indoors? the house stays cool. and gets cold at night...

Cool, man! I love the trellis you have going on there. By mid-summer those tomatoes, provided they are indeterminates, should be all over that thing!

i'm probably going to pull two+ of those plants and put in some that i have in the greenhouse. i'm pretty sure those in the ground now are all heirloom, but they were freebies and unlabeled. i'm more excited about the new ones than these

Temps in the high 90's seems to make stuff grow..
The papays have gotten taller
These are purple tomatillos that have gone through a growth spurt
Top of the hill, these are Rutgers Tomatoes..
Basil, this stuff grows like a weed anyway, i find it cropping up all over the place. I began this Basil last year from seeds that were 10 years old.
Arkansas & Zapoetic Tomatoes that were planted later than the rutgers..
A small watermelon, i didn't expect much of this plant but put the seedling in a pot & this is the 2nd fruit i have gotten.
Hot bananna peppers.

Powdery mildew! I just blasted this shit off my cucumber plant leaves by using the following solution:
1 teaspoon baking soda 1 quart water 1 tsp of vegetable oil A few drops of liquid soap
Good luck.

That hill project i was showing ya'll lil while back
Some sunflowers that are kickin' it on the planting table, going out to the mailboxes tomorrow to be planted in the ground.
My Jolokias, i just planted more, these guys don't produce much or very fast, and there are not many seeds in the peppers, there is a reason this one remains rare.

if sprayed could you go into detail?
and 3eyed: theyre not from seed. but ive got about 50 loph, and tricho seedlings right now and dont know wtf to do with them....
but im pretty sure pedros grow super fast. theyve both gained an inch or more since those pics

I mixed the stuff into a spray bottle and I zapped the shit out of my infected leaves. When you spray the leaves, the vegetable oil that you add helps the baking soda and soap stick to the leaves and completely obliterate your powdery mildew. The only downside is that it also might scorch your leaves a little. It's alright though, your plants oughta recover once the powdery shit is gone.

if my camera wasnt broken, id take some pics.
i got everything in the ground now, and its beautiful.
theres wild chikens and huge rats tho that im a bit worried about.
i have a few questions for you guys tho.
as of right now everything is just in the ground, no trellis' and no fencing for any climbers.
heres what i have.
cucumber greenbean polebean corn carrot okra onion tomato peppers
how many of these need something to climb
i was thinkin about getting some wire fence with about a 2" X 3" hole for the beans...
do cucumbers need any?
just help me out guys. all my veggies are in the earth and this is my first garden

Hey just me... you have rats and chickens running amok in the yard? Holy shit!
Anyways, to answer your question:
Cucumber: yes they will need a trellis unless they are a "bush" cultivar.
Greenbean/pole bean: will need some sort of trellis system though I've found using poles arranged like a teepee to train them to grow on works like a charm. Check out the pictures from my garden to see what I mean.
Corn and carrot: nope and nope
Okra: No experience with this plant- have no idea.
Onion: nope
Tomato: You have to know whether you are growing determinate or indeterminate tomatoes. If you are growing determinates, you will not need a support as they are compact plants that do not grow very tall or yield very much.
Indeterminates on the other hand will grow all season until they are killed by frost and can produce huge plants that may range from 6-10 feet. Indeterminates will need some type of support, be it a trellis, tomato cage, a stake or something else. Without support the vines will fall on the ground and will most likely get diseased.
Peppers: nope

You're welcome mang!
Peacevine cherry is an indeterminate cultivar so you're gonna need some kind of support to keep it up. http://www.burpee.com/product/vegetables/tomatoes/cherry+tomatoes/tomato+-+peacevine+cherry,+organic+(1+pkt.).do
Your Poinsett cukes are a vining variety so they'll either need a trellis or a lot of space to sprawl around if you're going to keep them on the ground. http://www.neeps.com/1278.html?productid=1278&channelid=BIZRA
Let me know how it goes.

No camera right now. Got lots of Tomatoes growing, some Jalapenos, Sweet peppers, Strawberries, Bunching onions, Cutting celery, and various herbs.
When the end of summer starts coming, I'm going to use my beds to plant salad greens , mostly for Mezclun. Mezclun is a blend of various different varieties of lettuce, arugula and other salad greens and herbs picked as very young shoots, making a very tender salad with no bitterness at all. In a typical Mezclun bed the plants are sown very closely together, as it's not intended for the plants to make it to maturity, as the young shoots are harvested throughout the season until it gets cold.
Next growing season, I'm getting epic with it. My soil around here is getting very nutrient deprived due to over-cultivation (Tomatoes mostly), so I'm cutting back on Tomatoes, and I'm going to start planting some green manures and legumes. I'm not sure if Peanuts have as good of nitrogen fixing qualities as Peas or Beans do, but I'm going to find out when I try my hand at some peanuts next season.
Been having a bit of a problem with my tomatoes lately, though. A couple of the plants have had lower stems die off, leaves turning yellow and slowly going brown at the edges. My first thought was a nutrient deficiency. After applying the appropriate nutes, two weeks later, the problem only seems to have gotten worse. I'm not sure what the problem is, but my thought seems to be disease. If these vines get any more far gone I'll have to rip them up to keep whatever it is spreading to the other vines. I get the feeling I'm going to get a crappy harvest this year.

It's possible you've got a case of the Fusarium wilt.

Fusarium/Verticillium Wilt
That right there is about spot on what my plants are doing now. I was afraid of that... That beefsteak was showing so much promise. Oh well, better tear them up before it spreads to the heirlooms. Let this be a lesson kids, planting the same crop in the same spot several years in a row makes your plants highly susceptible to this sort of thing.
I think next season i'm just going to put down some green manure (Cover Crop) there and let the bed fallow. The soil in this particular bed was once some (Kinda shitty) topsoil with a thick layer of clay hardpan a half foot or so in. Now, the soil is all clay...and not just clay like, it's actually tacky enough for me to use it as modeling clay.
I don't really have a wealth of growing space here, so I've been forced to use the same patches over and over again. I'll see if I can't rip up some sod and make a new patch. I don't want to resort to container tomatoes...I've never had tomatoes do well in a container other than cherry tomatoes.

Ichibans are great but my favorite have to be the white ones. They have a really creamy texture and taste great when cooked into a parmigiana. Also they look pretty cool
Here is my final harvest post and I've saved the best for last... The monster of my patch. A 2 ½ foot Cucuzza Squash!
My dog is such a good sport.

Mango trees, when fully grown are magnificent. The smell wafts from the garden. Fresh mango is amazing. I have such fond memories of climbing our ENORMOUS tree and sitting up in the high branches chowing down on plump sweet mangoes.
Although over these parts they attract fruit bats/flying foxes and they shit bright orange all over your cars.

mango is my favorite fruit. back at my old house my father has a pretty big mango tree, i used to eat all of the mango i could fit in my stomach lol.
i miss it.
but my mango that i have in a pot is now about 6 feet tall and is doing great. almost too great, i hope i get a house before it gets so large i cant move it lol. its hard to believe i plucked that thing out of the ground just a year and a half ago and frost killed it back to only two leaves.

Hey again everyone. I don't have the large amount of space available that I had last year to plant a bountiful vegetable garden outdoors however I have found enough room to grow the following crops :

6x2 garden box, have another 1 with onions and some lettuce that popped up on its own, and a 3rd that will be empty til spring.

I just planted 2 fig trees, a dwarf lemon, and a dwark lime tree. Spring as sprung here in FL, I have all my summer seedlings started... only problem is - I didn't label them So I guess I'm just gonna wing this one.
my little winter garden was a success but I can't WAIT until summer!
