What peppers are you growing this year?
    #8394556 - 05/12/08 11:28 PM (5 years, 11 days ago)

Ok so last frost is in a week or two here (hopefully) And ive been kinda slow at getting my peppers planted, hope i didnt wait TOO long to do it. Im doing the baggy and wet paper towel trick on my seeds and these are what just bagged and hoping will grow..

Bhut Jolokia
Red Caribbean Habanero
NuMex Suave Orange (orange habanaro, with habanaro flavor but way less heat)
Aji Cito
New Mexico Chile
Crispy Hybrid Bell Pepper
California Wonder 300 TMR Bell Pepper
Sweet Banana
Hot Banana
Aribibi Gusano
Lisa's Penguin
Danang
Mystery Habanaro (not sure which type it is)
Cayanne
Long thin cayanne (not sure the difference between this and normal cayanne)
Serrano
Jaloro
Jalapeno "M"
Red Chocolate & Cherry
Sweet Pepper "Corno Di Toro"
Pablano
Kung Pao
And a bunch of seeds from a mix from A3eyedfish

These all came from either walmart, A3eyedfish, or Chile Pepper Institute. Wish me luck. What all type of peppers are you all growing this year?

damn, that's a lot.

I'm doing bhut jolokia, numex suave orange, tabasco and numex twilight.  got a real early start under HID lighting, all were flowering and producing peppers before transplant.  put most in the ground last weekend.  the bhuts get tall, had to prune them a couple times.

bhuts inside, pretty scary looking, heh

numex suave orange, it's real weird at first to taste habanero and not get burnt  .

numex twilight, cool looking plant, peppers are hot but don't have much flesh/flavor once you remove the seeds and stuff.  still neat to grow, flowers quickly from seed.

no pics of the tabasco, they didn't seem to like it much inside, grew a lot but kept dropping leaves.  only a couple peppers on one plant, still small and they take a long time to ripen I guess.

Early Jalapenos
Thai Dragon

that's it for peppers. Possibly some sweets but it doesn't look like I got my stuff together soon enough. Might see get some starts at a nursey still, though

christ those bhut jolokias look fearsome :sun:

it's autumn here right now but from last year we still have:

habanero (not sure which, ripens to red...poss. savina?)
cayenne
jalapeno
thai dragon
sweet banana
manzano
something labeled as tabasco but looks/tastes much the same as thai dragon

think I'll just go all out on habanero varieties next year, maybe some scotch bonnets too

anyone tried the white or choc habs?

How spicy did your thai dragons turn out? I've never grown them and am not really sure what to expect.

respectable...about the same heat level as cayenne but because they're smaller they don't go as far...

they don't have that sweet orange-ish flavour as much either if you know what I mean...

Ok so of the 500+ seeds i was doing the wet paper tall trick on.. almost every single seed sprouted roots.. in less than a week. ive never had such success with germinating pepper seeds before. So far only one of the Aribibi Gusano seeds germinated which is more than i expected cause a3eyefish pmed me saying they were not germinating well for him. I guess im gonna have to go buy a bunch of pots or something within the next couple days. Hopefully ill have plenty of peppers this year for hot sauces!! Oh and cant forget that the couple hundred seeds i planted in my garden all sprouted over the weekend and are like an inch tall now. I didnt expect them to still be alive cause after i planted them it frosted over and snowed a couple times.

the trick to the paper towel method is to plant them within a day or two of sprouting, if you let it grow too long without being in soil it will become long, stretched out and weak.  i usually plant seeds germinated in this way either the day the root pokes out or the day after.

on a side note, my fiancee and i were out of town for 3 days and the seedling tray with the pimento and the unknown pepper all died, they dried out too much to be saved.  i have more pimento seeds, but the unknown pepper is gone forever now. its really aggrivating to lose something that you have no idea where you got it from.  :nonono:

if you don't get pots from free cycle, try a landscape nusery, they sell the used ones cheap.

I've yet to buy mine this year, I went to the greenhouse I usually go to and she's got a ton of delicious things, I'll have to go there this weekend.

Cowhorn chilis?

Just transplanted my Bolivan Rainbow and Thai Sun peppers into larger pots.

Soaking the following seeds overnight in warm water:
  • Hot Lemon Pepper
  • Chicken Heart Pepper
  • Sweet Crimson Pepper
  • White Bianca Tomato

Tomorrow, I will place seeds 1/4" deep into moistened soil with humidity tent (i.e. pots covered in plastic wrap with hoels poked in it) for germination.
