cow patties
    #8378120 - 05/08/08 03:48 PM (15 years, 10 months ago)

I live behind a cow graising field... I find shrooms not regularly but when they are there there is tons.. What is the right temp/humidity/dew point (whatever) for Psilocybe cubensis to grow?

Also, if I take cow patties i found with the shrooms growing on them can I use them as cakes to cultivate and if so how?

http://www.shroomery.org/forums/search.php

search!

get acquainted with the life cycle of the mushroom, then you'll see how you will need to get a clean spore print from one of those outside mushrooms, then get some myc going (hard to do with outdoor mushrooms without using agar) in cake form (you'll need a syringe) and fruit in the right conditions.

simply taking a cow pattie and putting it in fruiting conditions will most likely result in quicker contamination, as well as nasty smells. you really wont get that many mushrooms either.

definetly read up on basic cultivation and youll see.

Spore print would be your best bet to start a grow. You have ALOT of reading to do however.

Thanks for the info, yeah I've read up a bunch and know what to look for I was basicly trying to short cut the spore printing and syringe by taking the cow patties I see the shrooms growing from and placing them in good flowering conditions and was wondering if thats possible? I basicly did Moes Outdoor method with using the patties with a few shrooms on them already... is it just luck if I get something? I mean they grow naturally anyways so I figured just helpin nature a lil might better my odds and avoid me having to go out walkin through the multiple fields and looking for the right ones cause theres alot of mushrooms that grow out there that dont turn blue when bruised and I believe that means they arent the right ones.. If I'm wrong or someone can point in the right direction regarding that lemme kno.. I can take pics if needed... I'm not a newbie to finding the shrooms, just cultivating.

Thanks and any help is appreciated,

Dash

I think you may be better off contacting a vendor or cloning a grocery store mushroom.
If all you are using to ID mushrooms is whether or not they stain blue I see a trip to the hospital in your future.

I have experimented with this, and still am....I just took some old dried patties that had mycelium very nicely present, and transplanted them into a large potting soil/dirt mix, embedded them just a bit, and watered....

...and yeah. I have gotten small but predictable yields, after 2 small pickings, I have 5g dried....so yeah it works. All I did was keep them moist, just a little water for a couple days, and boom, they produced. In fact I checked today, (there were none last night) and I have two nice sized ones ready to harvest.

This is a pic of the results....

cool, thanks. yeah thats what i basicly did. the patties i took had lil sprouts already and tons of white fungii. i put it in a compost/manure/straw mixture and watered... been two days and them lil sprouts are growin nice, should i leave them to drop spores or wait til the hoods break and whatnot to keep it goin?

yeah that shit works... the initial shoots that were on the patties when i grabbed it grew.. then yesterday evening i watered the patch and went out this morning and there's more growing. hopefully this will fruit all summer!

Any suggestions to keep it fruiting?

Dash

lol yeah it is obvious, but we've had some good rain here in louisiana the past few days and the humidity and heat these past two days, so i should be ok without watering it, i think. it also leads me to believe tomorrow will be a bonzana in the fields around me because i found a few scattered ones around the fields today that usually means theres about to be a bunch showing up!

You think I should mist my lil patch tonight anyway?

Thanks,
Dash

wow i've done the same thing and all i 've come up with is small shrooms about nickel to quater sized caps and average about 5-8 each time. so if i add some hay and mix it up with ther cow patties it should help produce them better?

Yeah I've been getting the same, I added more cow patties with the mycellium in it to the patch yesterday and I'm hoping itll produce a lil bit more. I got one nice size one this morning, so it looks like its picking up a bit. Try adding wet hay and a manure/compost mix with it.. maybe that'll help.

Keep me posted, as will I.
