i had to, cuz i didnt want to thread jack 
we've already gave our opinions on who SUCKS, now whos GREAT and didnt get recognition
i for one have to say Grateful Dead, is wayyyyyy under rated. the only ppl whove heard of them are dead heads and like minded fools, and i know everyone i introduce them to, falls in love with them. i know i did when i was introduced.
Bob Marley solo and w/The Wailers is my all time favorite hands down. but i dont think he was Under rated...everyone knows hes great
and some newer bands i really enjoy that get no notariety...

Christian Death - this band is seriously all but forgotten. Really good late 80s/early 90s goth rock. You'd think they'd be more popular considering the lead vocalist commited suicide at a young age. That usually guarantees notoriety.

Gang Starr. legendary hip-hop icons who aren't recognized by nearly as many people as they should be. People under the stairs is also a way under rated hip-hop group.
but for rock bands, i really dig wolf parade. they make fuckin amazing music and no one knows em. ehh, im not complaining though. them being popular or not doesn't make their music any worse or better for me.

I always really like this old punk band, Funeral Oration, although they had a short run, and I'm not even sure you can buy their music anymore.

I know that this will probably be contested but I think 311 is underrated. Yes, they have become mainstream. Their last two albums were mostly garbage. But their old music is fucking amazing.
They don't sing about depressing bullshit like the majority of bands do. They preach positive vibes, being kind to your neighbor, enjoying pot, having awesome times in the summer with friends, reminiscing over teenage years and loving their fans and playing great shows. That is good music. It's a great pick me up when I'm feeling down.
Another one that is underrated is Zebrahead. Same story with them. Old stuff was fun. Mostly nonsensical, but fun and upbeat. It's rap rock though, so it's kind of a niche audience. Great underrated band though.
Anyone want some uploads of either bands older material?

I used to listen to Zebrahead when I was in middle school. I downloaded their song "Playmate of the Year" the other day, just for lulz. It hasn't aged well. At all.

A+ for Propagandi and The Weakerthans!
As far as underrated goes....I think that Slash's Snakepit (Slash from GNR) was far more underrated than it deserved. It's Five O'Clock Somewhere is a fucking awesome album.
A Wilhelm Scream, though they've been getting a lot of press from the punk scene lately, are still far underrated imo.

It's the most tripped out music ever made IMO, or at least that I've come across. It seems peoples minds are too limited to understand their true power and effect.
Or maybe it's that people need to just eat more mushrooms and acid, then listen to them!
For me, Autechre is easily the most under rated music. Please don't try to argue unless you've already tried eating 5 grams of boomers and listening to them

For jam music.......Omar Rodriguez Lopez.....Between Defacto, At the drive inn, The Mars Volta, and all his solo work, he has something like 37 albums of sheer genius, and he says he's got more than 400 songs written waiting to be produced.
For rock music it would have to be Blind Melon. Those guys are freaking amazing and people think they are just a one hit wonder.
Boards of canada for techno.
For stoner rock.....THE SWORD.
For Progressive rock there is a TON.....These bands put out some great music and don't get shit for recognition for it.....Dream Theater....Liquid tension experiment....The Flower Kings....Porcupine Tree...There's a ton more too....

Mike Oldfield...
he's so fucking amazing.
His album Tubular Bells... I've never heard a more amazing and moving piece. Most people just know the opening theme because of The Exorcist, and that's why it's underrated. The album in its entirety is where it's at. The transitions always blow my mind.
Also...
Straylight Run.
Not many have heard of them, but they have some really awesome songs, most of which are really trippy. First CD, which is self-titled, is the best.

Norma Jean, only thier first album Bless the Martys Kiss the Child.

The mars volta are far from over rated. It's such an aquired taste I can barely ever get someone into their jams, because they think it's just "noise".
Those guys should truley be making millions, not some bullshit like linkin park.

I remember a couple years ago it was cool to like Mars Volta, I'd see tons of people wearing Mars Volta shirts and whatnot.
I think it's fair to say that they are overrated.

No, they are over rated. Yes, the guitar is pretty damn good. But christ, that guys voice is like fingernails on a fucking chalkboard. And the lyrics are crap too. They don't deserve the following they have. It's not good music, IMHO.

Really I didn't say the mars volta......
I was talking about their guitar player Omar Rodriguez Lopez ( who is obviously under rated, because you picked the mars volta out of the list of projects, when really Omar needs the recognition ).
He is a beast of a song writer, he's in 3 active projects right now. And he's done work with a lot of other musicians. The only thing he ever really gets credit for is the mars volta, the rest of his work goes unnoticed.

My pick for underrated band is Social Distortion. I am more basing this on seeing them live three times... Great band, awesome cover of Johnny Cash's Ring of Fire. .

Hands down, The Verve is the most under rated band of all time. Every single one of their albums is a masterpiece but all they are ever known for is Bittersweet Symphony, and that is the only song that ever gets played on airwaves.

That's just your opinion though. I know all of this is opinion, but for a band like the mars volta, which is obviously by it's very nature going to be a love it or hate it kind of thing, I don't think it's really a fair statement.

Captain Beyond is the most underrated band in history. So underrated that even many people who were totally into music at the time never even heard of them.

--just in case the last post didn't convince you to run right out and get this CD. Listen to this one start to finish... even through the quiet parts. It's worth it. I love the intro at around 3:40. Totally hippy, but cool nonetheless.
It truly is a mystery these guys aren't better known. Their stuff is as good as any of the giant bands of the era -- the Who, Zeppelin, the Stones, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath -- and miles ahead of most of the rest.

This is the stupidest thread. It's just gonna be a bunch of niche bands that like-minded listeners are going to agree upon. I can't think of one band that isn't relatively big that I would recommend to someone who doesn't listen to the genre that whatever band I'm recommending is in.

Yes, I understand the whole concept of being opinionated in styles of music (trust me, I really do.) That's kinda what makes this thread just as pointless as those overrated band threads. What makes a band overrated or underrated? Too many people or not enough people like them? Why? What makes you think too many or not enough people are into a band? It's ridiculous.

Another post in favor of my argument. I hear people say VU is both overrated AND underrated all the fucking time. How can that even be?
The only exception I can think of is relatively new bands who haven't had a lot of exposure yet. But then they wouldn't be the most underrated band in history, since they haven't been around for too long.

Yeah. Wishbone Ash -- another underrated band for sure. I liked their 1972 album, Argus. I saw them live in 1973 in Ottawa, Canada, and it was a very good concert.
But that's my point about Captain Beyond: they're at least as good as Wishbone Ash (in my opinion they're much better) but most of my fellow Baby Boomers have heard of Wishbone Ash, while maybe five pecent have even heard of Captain Beyond.
And Captain Beyond was no "niche" band. It was as straightup hard driving rock as Deep Purple or Alice Cooper or The Who or Led Zeppelin. Just a lot more obscure.

There are tons of sites on the internet to let you know about good new music. Pitchfork (as much as it pains me to say it) has pointed me in the direction of many bands I had never heard of. Obscure Sound has more lesser-known stuff.

You have a wealth of information when it comes to music at your finger tips. How people can say music now is in a worse state is beyond me, the ability to share and discover so much new music makes a lot of stuff that would have gone unnoticed in the past far more popular now.

Also.. I know not a lot of people on this forum are into death metal.. but DEATH (the band) was the pinnacle.. they stand out above every other death metal band that came after them. They defined the genre Death metal.. hence... DEATH metal. They combined a lot of jazz and classical influence and melded it with their own style of metal.. every album is truly epic. Also, the lyrics stand out from most as they are not singing about mutilated corpses and shit.. the lyrics tended to focus more around topics like freedom (mental, spiritual and psychological), religious and political persecution.. and such.
They are usually hailed as the best of the best among most metal aficionados.. but outside of that circle most have never even heard of them. I have turned several of my non-metal-liking friends on to them. Definitely under appreciated.

Most of the bands in this thread have sold a lot of albums, I wouldn't call any of them underrated if we've all heard of them.
An underrated band doesn't get any publicity even though the music is good and doesn't sell many albums.
The guy that helped produce Beck's 'Mellow Gold' recorded a concept album called 'Forest For The Trees' in 1993.
It wasn't released until 1997 and still was a little ahead of it's time and didn't sell well at all because of bad promotion.
Even though it sounded kind of campy sober it was a work of genius when heard tripping, which few people tried.
The CD is on amazon for $.01 + $2.98 shipping. Now that's underrated.
Dreamworks Records shelved FFTT's second album and dropped tour support. 
Maybe 'underrated' = 'no one likes them but me'

I agree with VU being over and under rated (after hours is pure gold).
I'd be willing to guess the most underrated would be David Santo, for his song Scorpio rising. I can't be certain how popular it was back in the day, because I wasn't around then
EDIT: I take it back, Tom Waits gets my vote for most underrated. (Well atleast until the cover CD by Scarlett Johansson becomes famous)
