 Drug trafficking on the rise [INDIA]

The geographical location of Madhya Pradesh is proving to be a boon for drug traffickers and the mafia. With the bordering States Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh, sharing their borders with neighbouring countries Madhya Pradesh has become a hub of drug peddlers.
The picture is grim and scary if the State's statistics of the last three years on seizures of marijuana and ganja are taken into account.
In 2005 a total of 5,158 kg of ganja was seized in the State, which shot up to 8,936 kg in 2006. In 2007 this increased exorbitantly to 14,794 kg.
In the State capital around 2 months back 30 kg of ganja was seized. The stuff was packed in a suitcase and smuggled from Bihar. It was being brought to be delivered to the agents. What is surprising is that payment of the narcotic was made through a bank draft. There have been a number of such incidents that proves that MP has become a safe and suitable shelter for transporting such substances to other parts of the country.
Ganja which is made from dried flower clusters and leaves of the cannabis plant, is used in both smoking and eating forms to induce euphoria. It is also heavily consumed in the tribal belts of the State.
With terrorism gaining ground to express dissent against Governments, the means of funding these activities are increasingly being linked to drugs in the State.
India has braced itself to face the menace of drug trafficking both at the national and international levels. Several measures involving innovative changes in enforcement, legal and judicial systems have been brought into effect. The introduction of death penalty for drug-related offences has been a major deterrent.
A local NGO, that runs deaddictive camps, states it no longer is an individual or a social problem, but a politico-economic one with the facet of narco-terrorism. The constant increase in the quantity of various drugs seized worldwide indicates the increase in the number of addicts.
Bhopal Range Inspector General of Police (IG) Shailendra Shrivastava in a telephonic conservation with The Pioneer confirmed that the State being centrally located in India was generally used as the centre for transporting such substances. Continuous efforts were on to check such trade of narcotics by the police, he added.
