Sounds like the victim doesn't have a lot of close family as she was living w/ a friend. It wasn't just a simple bullying or fight from what I've read. The girl is still partially without sight or hearing... that's pretty fucked. If it were a bunch of boys doing the beating they'd probably be charged as adults.

that is seriously the most fucked up shit I've seen.
They said the age ranges from 14-18.
The ones aged 16-18 should be charged as an adult. The others should get the full juvenile sentence.
They all should be required to have intense therapy.
Also, I can't help but think the parents are somewhat at fault and should also be charged and required to take some type of course for raising teenagers. Especially the parents of the girls who were under 16. The thing about parents today is they let their kids walk all over them, especially teenage girls. I mean ever watch Sweet Sixteen? Those girls are some manipulative little bitches who constantly shit on and boss around their parents. They knew what they were doing and should be sentenced as adults.
Poor girl i feel sorry for her, but seriously random beatings are nothing new, it's just most people arn't stupid enough to video tape it.
In my eyes violence is just an idiots way of settling an argument but at the same time if your backed into a corner by multiple people it's best to go down swinging what ever the fuck is nearest. You never know if you take the biggest down the rest may just back off.
On a side note it's incidents like this that really further my discust for most of humanity (don't get me wrong there are decent folk, they're just few and far between).
Like the three unpleasant rectums that decided to beat a crippled person to death for a £5 bet. He was in a wheelchair and completely incapable of defending himself. Luckely the justice system prevaled and they went down for long(ish) sentances, i would have done things much differently though.
All in favour for cruel and unusualy punishments that reflect the crime say eye!

I even knew this one girl who named her kid Benjamin Michael White (BMW). I mean seriously.

Finally, I am torn on the 'charge as adult' bit. I did some stupid things when I was their age. Looking back, purely stupid on my part, but at the time, my mind had no concept of the magnitude of the repercussions. Yeah, I knew what I was doing was 'wrong', but I never considered that I might get caught or that I might get in trouble or how bad what I was doing actually was. Children make mistakes. Sometimes, children make really bad mistakes. When this happens, who is really at fault, the child (that lacks the mental capability to fully understand the repercussions of their actions) or the parent (that was too busy doing something else to be bothered with the responsibility of caring for their children)?

One thing is doing stupid stuff and another is cornering someone and beating them to the point they can loose an eye.
I would not agree with children being judged as adults for theft, arson, even murder. Everyone commits mistakes.
But something like this where they consciously beat someone again and again, knowing the pain they were causing and in fact intending to cause that pain and damage... They knew fine well what they were doing and wanted it to happen. It wasn't a let's pull your hair out and kick you a bit fight, they were going straight for the face.
For me they can lock em away and throw away the key.

I know they were kids, and may not have understood the consequences of what they were doing, or how easily it could have been worse, but we put people in jail because they can't function in our society (in theory at least, I know that's not always the reality). These kids obviously felt that kidnapping someone, beating them and laughing about it was ok. Not only that but they thought they could get away with it. When they let her go they told her not to call the cops or the next beating would be worse.
The victim is going to be traumatized for the rest of her life, and frankly, the perpetrators don't have much chance at a functional life anymore either. What they did that day changed who they were and what they were capable of doing.
These kids should be put in jail, people like them is the reason jail appeals to us. That behaviour is pretty fucking anti-social, and if we don't put them in jail now, what do they get taught? It's ok to kidnap and beat someone, show the world and not get punished?
They dug their own grave, they made some pretty bad fucking mistakes. You can't act like that. They were young, and maybe let it get way out of hand but the fact remains, you can't act like that.
Just the other day in one of my classes these two guys got into an argument in a class discussion, last day of class in a fourth year class. After class I was walking in the hall and one guy runs up to the other and starts slamming him into the wall and yelling. Someone broke it up, but I wouldn't be surprised if the dude filed charges. I just can't imagine how much it would suck to be this close to graduation and get hit with an assault charge that happened ON campus outside class first thing in the morning, both sober. That shit shouldn't happen, this isn't junior high. Honestly? the guy who got slammed deserved it, but so will the other guy if he gets an assault charge. There's no excuse for behaviour like that and my classmate should have known better and so should any one of the 8 teens involved in this case.

I am a firm believer in public flogging. The shame of being beaten in front of your peers, or even on TV would be a much better deterrent to crime. Think of the tax revenues from Pay-per-viewing it.

I seriously doubt they thought it through that far, or saw it as kidnapping or beating somebody. I'm not trying to justify their actions, but I still remember how the teenage mind works and there is a very good reason why teenagers are not considered adults; their minds have not matured enough to grasp the long term ramifications of their actions. Did they know what they were doing was wrong. Certainly. Did the understand the magnitude of how wrong it was or the repercussions that their actions would create. No, I suspect that they did not.

I agree with you more than you know. I feel really bad for how much these kids fucked up. What they did was wrong, but I did some wrong things when I was teenager that when I look back on I just shake my head. I suspect their teenage minds did not equate their actions to abduction and near deadly beatings, they thought it was just a school fight or some bullying, no big deal. They were wrong, it is a big deal.
Frankly, I don't think jail is really ever the answer, not if you ever want the person to be "rehabilitated" I've read the Crim theory, jail is pretty cruel and unusual. BUT in the real world, jail is what we use, and it is theoretically to keep dangerous people off the streets. I don't think these kids are hardened criminals, but they are more than just bullies.
It's not about being made an example of, it;s just the consequences. We have jail for people who exhibit dangerous anti-social behaviour. Like I said, I don't think they really understood the magnitude of what they were doing, but they did it. Sure, the parents failed in teaching kids responsibility obviously, but these kids are 14-18, you don't get to be that old without realizing there are social mores against kidnapping and gang beating. They knew, but they acted by their own rules, their highschool tiffs and internet coolness took precedent.
I don't know if after videotaping yourself involved in a kidnap/gang beating, having it all over the world as well as the trial and all the buzz this has generated is really conducive to rehabilitation. Seriously it should be tried, but this is going to have a very permanent impact on how they develop (still lots going on).
Like I said Seuss, I agree with you more than you know, but man, they broke a lot of important rules in our society and they are going to have to face the consequences that have been put in place. It's the necessary evil for the system to work. (one could argue that it still doesn't).
When people with trumped up drug charges spend years in prison we all lose faith in the system. When people get community service and counselling because their very public kidnap and assault gets turned into a misdemeanour, its the same thing.
Public Flogging could work too.

this happened where i live, and ive heard quite a bit about it, apparently the mother of the girl that lived in that house, WAS THERE when it happened, but claimed that she heard nothing..... are you fucking shitting me?? you dont hear something like that while youre in the house?? it went on for 30 fucking minutes! i say the mother should be charged as well.
and fuck that, they all deserve to be charged as adults, they know what they did was wrong, they knew the consequences, and it was calculated, sadistic and brutal. they beat her UNCONCIOUS, and left her with hearing and vision loss in one ear and one eye.

Jerry Ashley said his wife is scared to be home alone.
POLK COUNTY (Bay News 9) -- A Lakeland couple has been receiving threatening phone calls since Wednesday morning after someone posted their home address and phone number on YouTube under a clip of the beating of a Bay area teen.
Darlene and Jerry Ashley have the same last name as one of the underage suspects arrested in connection with the beating. And since being posted on You Tube, the couple's number and address has been copied to other web sites.
"My wife is scared to be home alone," Jerry said.
The Ashley's said they used to lead a quiet life until the video hit the Internet. The couple doesn't even have children.
Every few minutes their phone rings with someone wanting to tell the suspect exactly what they think of him.
"I'm calling from Brooklyn you f__ piece of s__," one caller said. "Let me tell you something, look out your f__ window. I'll slit your throat and beat the s__ out of you."
Some of the calls and messages were so violent that the Ashley's called the police.

The couple said the calls come in about every three minutes.
They said they've had the same phone number for more than a decade and don't want to change it.
"It's on our checks, on business cards; it's everywhere," Darlene said.
"It's wrong," Jerry said. "You should not be allowed to just put stuff on the Internet simply because you can."
The Ashley's said the Lakeland Police Department told them there's little they can do about the phone threats.
But they said the department did promise to increase police patrols in their neighborhood since their address was also made public.

yes. as much as i question the authority systems of our society, this is exactly what we have jails for.
i remember a story about the justice system in an archaic tribal society somewhere on earth.. they would take the criminals out into the lake and incapacitate their ability to swim. the members of the victim's family would sit in a boat, watching them struggle in the water, choosing whether to let them drown, or forgive them and save their lives. imagine the imprint happening.
here in digital america we don't quite handle the aftermath of violence in the same manner, which is understandable considering that we have a population of the millions. so jail is what we have for this, and from what i've heard the parents of the beaten child say, they definitely want to see those girls drown.

that is correct, they pay 10%, so if it was 30k then they had to pay 3k each, to be on HOUSE ARREST until they are convicted. and they will be.

So what happens if you can't pay bond or you are not given the option but are then found Not Guilty?
Do you get some kind of compensation for those days/weeks/months spent in jail?
