Plea Deals Offered For Teens In Videotaped Beating
Wednesday, November 19, 2008 – updated: 10:03 am EST November 19, 2008
POLK COUNTY, Fla. -- Five plea deals were on the table in a case that began with a vicious girl fight and a video camera. Eyewitness News has followed every development surrounding the videotaped beating in Polk County since it happened in March.
Tuesday, the teenagers charged with attacking 17-year-old Victoria Lindsay were offered plea bargains. Prosecutors won't give any details, but they did say if the teens accept the deal, it would resolve

Brittni Hardcastle, a Polk County teen accused in the world-famous videotaped beating of Victoria Lindsay, pleaded guilty today to felony false imprisonment and misdemeanor battery.
Hardcastle was first arrested in April, along with four other teen girls and two teen boys accused of participating in an attack on the then-16-year-old Lindsay and recording the beating on video.
A judge will make a decision on Hardcastle's sentence March 20. The plea agreement calls for three to five years of probation. She could spend months behind bars but the judge also could say that won't be necessary, said Chip Thullbery, a spokesman for the state attorney's office.
Conditions of Hardcastle's probation state that write a letter of apology to Lindsay but won't have contact with her, will pay restitution and will not earn money from media interviews.
Before accepting the plea, Hardcastle was facing charges of kidnapping, battery and tampering with a witness.
"Given all the facts and circumstances around the case and after conversations with the victim's family, it [the plea agreement] appeared to be a just result of the case," Thullbery said.
Polk County sheriff's detectives say the teens were going to post the video on YouTube and MySpace in retaliation for online smack-talking between the girls.
Charges against the boys, who were accused of acting as lookouts, were dropped.
Hardcastle, Mercades Nichols and Brittany Mayes have made plea agreements.
Kayla Hassell and April Cooper still face charges. They are expected to make pleas before a judge Wednesday morning, Thullbery said.

Mom Of Teen In Taped Beating Arrested
Sunday, February 15, 2009 – updated: 10:23 am EST February 16, 2009
POLK COUNTY, Fla. -- The mother of Mercades Nichols, who made headlines in 2008 as the supposed ring leader of a group of girls who violently beat up teenager Victoria Lindsay, was arrested Saturday. Christina Garcia was arrested after deputies said she got into two fights with her daughter at her home.
Investigators told Eyewitness News that Nichols' grandmother broke up the fights. Garcia was arrested and charged with two counts of domestic battery.

Detectives say the teens planned to post a video of the attack online. Five girls and two boys were charged in the case; charges against the boys were dropped.
In exchange for Nichols' guilty plea, prosecutors agreed to drop charges of felony kidnapping and witness tampering, which carried maximum sentences of life in prison and five years in prison, respectively.
