Spring 2008 Grow
    #8210664 - 03/29/08 02:47 PM

This grow will be a multiple monotub just like the other one in my journal. I will be putting an emphasis on finding new ways to simplify my whole process. Thinking about it in retrospect I think the most physically time consuming thing I did on the last grow was preparing the hpoo and pasteurizing it. But i really like the outcome of the last grow. The hpoo was nice and broken up, there weren't many big pieces in it all all. Here are the things i will need to get this grow going:

*Spores (I have a lot of left over spores but i have been getting contams with them. I do not need any more contams or stalled jars)

*Vermiculite

*peat moss

*5 gallon paint straining bags for the manure.

*Plexiglass cutting 26 x 10 in.

*16 pounds of rye

*horse shit (fill up a 24 gallon container)

*5 Gallons of distilled H20

*attachment pieces to connect tubs with

*thoroughly clean tyvek wrist sleaves, jars, and tub

I think that is the complete list. If I think of something else I will put it down. I will order the spores today.

I have to be completely finished with this grow by June 12 so i think i should probably get started ASAP, which means the first thing i need to do is to purchase my spores. Wish me luck everyone!

Underlined items have now been acquired.

I picked up a few items today. They are:

*Organic whole rye berries
*5 gallon distilled H20
*Sent away for spores

Next weekend I will get the following:

*Vermiculite
*peat moss
*horse shit (fill up a 24 gallon container)

One thing i forgot to mention is perlite. I really don't using it but i don't want to set up my martha closet again just for a few cakes. I am talking about the red and green cakes from the merry xmas shroomery thread i meade in december, well the cakes are colonized now (obviously, lol) and i have been just waiting to fruit em. This should be interesting.

Tonight I will be getting the rye soaked. Tomorrow morning i will PC it. Then i should be getting the spores in the mail in the next few days. I will do the inoc procedure the night i get the spores. I love pictures and love looking at very detailed pictorial grow ops so that is what i will try to make this one.

and so it begins. Pictures coming soon.

I went out and got my horse shit today. I hope it will be enough. I think it will. I also bought a lot of peat moss and 12 quarts of organic vermiculite. The rye has soaked for 18 hours or so and then boiled to help it absorb more water. I think the kernals are all dry now so it might be ready to PC. Although i think i will wait until this evening to pressure cook them. I have 14 jars ready to load. I washed them in the dishwasher a bit ago - for the third time.

Something else i will need to do in the next few days is clean my bathroom very thoroughly. I think the peat moss i got is really good. Although, i didn't spend much time looking it over at the nursery.

Pictures will be posted later i guess.

Items still needed:

*5 gallon paint straining bags for the manure.

*Plexiglass cutting 26 x 10 in.

*attachment pieces to connect tubs with

Preparing the Rye

This pot is what i used to soak and simmer the rye in. The white stuff you see on the sides of the pot are probably gypsum. I added that to the rye before the soak. I used a bit over a tablespoon for the entire batch.

Below is a pic of the jars that i am about ready to put in the PC. I put aluminum foil on top of them first. I covered each of the 4 holes in the top of the jar lids with micropore tape. I also used a layer of tyvek between the jar opening and the lid.

Organic Sphagnum Peatmoss:

Organic Vermiculite:

Horse Manure:

I got the spores today! Wow, thanks Ralphster, that was quick! The KU game is on and i simply can not miss the NCAA Championship game. lol. So, depending on when the game is over I might put off the inoc until tomorrow. But it would be nice to get this started today since im on a time crunch. ahh, whatever. 14 jars are PC'd still sitting on the cooker still. More to come......

It's been 5 days and there is growth in almost all the jars. My colonization method seems to be sub par at this point. colonization temps have been from 76 - 82 degrees. I was expecting MUCH more growth by this stage, but it's ok. Tonight i will move them to another place and hopefully they will colonize faster this way. Pictures will be taken next week.

The jars have been in fairly warmer conditions for the last few days (approx 85 day and 80 at night). I shook them all yesterday to spread the colonization points out a bit. I can already see new growth from all those points. Looks great! I will take pictures soon I think.

I bought some plexiglass and the paint straining bags today. I don't need to use either of these items for a couple of weeks but it doesn't hurt to have them ready. Plexiglass i will have to put into the top of the tub. I might do this tomorrow or maybe right now. IDK.

Wow, they are further along than I expected them to be. I'm thinking that by next weekend I will actually be able to pasteurize the poo and do that spawning. That is the goal anyway. I think i will shake up the jars that aren't progressing too much since last week.

I checked the jars earlier today and took a few pictures. Of the 14 jars I originally inoculated all but 3 of them are ready for the spawn run. Here are the colonized jars. They look pretty good. I shook them up once last week and they broke up clean and easy.

Here are the three jars that are not colonized yet. The parts in the picture are the least colonized part of each jar.

I will pasteurize the horse shit on Tuesday. I like taking pictures of that stuff cause it gets really nasty. And i am a bit twisted at times.

I pasteurized the poo on Tuesday night and then did the same amount the next night the following mornings I filled up the tubs with the spawn and substrate.

I added vermiculite, garden gypsum, and calcium carbonate to the hpoo. I didn't measure anything with this. no ph measurements or controlled quantities added. I just added as much as i felt like adding and i think it will be fine.

This was 4/30 and 5/1 when i did the spawning. Here the tubs are this morning.

This first one is the one i did on 4/30. I did this one in layers - poo rye poo rye poo rye poo - and as you can see it is only peaking out in a few small places.

This next one i did more of a complete mix. there were lots of rye pieces exposed when i put them in the incubation room.

On May 8 I will be exactly one month into this project. I have been pretty diligent with it and haven't had any real delays up to this point (w/ one small exception) and everything seems to be progressing as i had expected. I just hope these tubs get colonized. After that I will be worried much less about all this.

I think this is a good time to add some information that might be missing from this little log. The tubs that I am using in the pictures above are 90 quart each. I am doing two of them on this grow. They are both 36" long x 15 1/2" wide and 14" deep. Here are some pictures of the two tubs during colonization. I will mention something that i have found interesting here.

^This tub I did the spawning procedure on 5/01/08. It is just about ready to case. I have already pasteurized my casing layer as well. I will provide more details on that later on - when i Post pictures of it.

^These pictures were taken today. This one was spawned on 4/30 and both were inoc'd on 4/08. This one had some, what i think was, cobweb mold on it. I got rid of all that poo that had that on it. However, i am not certain of what that was so i am just keeping a close eeye on it now. I did spray it with a water / hydro peroxide mix a few days ago and that didn't seem to impact it. It's all gone now though.

I will be applying the casing layer in the next week or so.
