I know nothing about marijuana, so bear with me.
Am I to assume that the fine white crystals on these nugs are almost pure THC? Seems unlikely.
I wouldn't be able to tell the best weed from the worst by looking at it. haha

Yes (and no.) These whitish "crystals", or trichomes, contain a number of different things--though pertinent here are of course the cannabinoids. There are hundreds of different cannabinoids present in marijuana, though from what I understand only about a half-dozen produce psychoactive effects. The one which accounts for most of the effects is THC, which is found within the trichomes:
In shorthand, a greater concentration of trichomes usually indicates a higher THC content.
In longhand, there are several kinds of trichomes, THC is unstable in that it has precursors and degrades over time, and there are other components of the trichome which have weight but are not cannabinoids. So the "crystals"/trichomes are not pure THC, but that is where it is found.
(More importantly, I'm not an expert so if someone has more specific information about the physical composition of a cannabis trichome please post it.)
