Growing legal mushrooms for profit?
    #6490734 - 01/23/07 08:49 PM (17 years, 2 months ago)

Wow, I don't think I've ever even entered this realm of the shroomery, but I am wondering...

  • How profitable can growing legal mushrooms be?
  • Anything I should know about it?
  • What species of mushrooms would be the most profitable?
  • Who would you supply to? (Grocery store distributors, restaurants, etc.)
  • Health regulations?

Thank you in advance for any answers or feedback!!! I currently reside in northern Canada if that helps at all.

I realize this post is a year old, but it's still just as interesting today.

I'm thinking of setting up a small time reishi grow and supplying to the health stores around my campus. From what I've read, it's easy to grow, and makes a good profit; I've heard reishis go for as much as 30 a pound! I'm not sure if this is true, I'd love to hear people's experience on wholesale selling prices of any strain they've sold.

Anyone have any experience? Opinions?

1) Moderatly, cost of goods sold is good, but overhead eats up the rest.
2) Knowing how to grow them and how to operate a business
3) The seasonal ones are most profitable because most often there is a market vacuum
4) Ppl that eat mushrooms
5) Get a regular checkup every year after 40.

I think that the way to go is to manufacture a product from medicinal fungi and sell that. I think a drink would be great but you need to work on making it palatable for sure.

People are already doing that. If you want to really bank on something you are better off coming up with something new and then market the hell out of it and if its good hopefully it will catch on. The guy who invented Probars was a ski bum. Come up with something new and if its good and you pitch it right who knows?

He's right. Oyster market is saturated. Around here wholesalers are paying 75 cents per pound. Blues and yellows get more but only a dollar or so more.

That's in line with terminal market prices across the country. Also yours are local-small-family farm quality so you should definitely be getting your premiums over the terminal prices.
http://www.ams.usda.gov/fv/mncs/TERMVEG.HTM
Even in the Philadelphia Terminal markets;
5 lb cartons PA Oyster 17.00
from http://www.ams.usda.gov/mnreports/NA_FV020.txt

Down here, they're not even listed on the terminal markets and they're definitely not any kind of saturated market where we are. $0.75/lb hurts!

I don't think this wholesaler moved many exotics, not his kind of clientèle. For those in the midwest; two words, both start with P. Shouldn't be hard to guess, based in Indy but they ship all the way up to WI and OH.

Personally, I am having a hard time finding awareness of anything but shiitake.
Those aware are already happy with their Cali based supplier. Whole Foods/Wild Oats are the only grocery stores I know of that actually DEMAND American grown product. Most produce managers at Marsh, Kroger etc; if they are not buying from a local farm, they don't even know that they are getting Chinese product.

It's all well and good because I need a couple grand more upstart capitol ($$$) to get going. Even after I get all that capitol I still need an extra body to do legwork (outside sales).

I seriously need to buy some of those chinese shiitake and send them for heavy metals testing. Perhaps after the November elections, we'd actually have a chance to get them banned if the concentrations of lead and mercury are as high as other products they dump on our markets. It sucks that supermarkets are boycotting our producers to buy contaminated product from china. :frown:

It's a double edged sword. If the media got a hold of such a test, volume would take a huge hit. But at least the American industry would recover.

The thing that pisses me off is that what determines your ability to package your goods as 'product of' is the total cost of the item, at least in Canada. So if China sends over a truckload of vegetables and they get packaged here in Canada, because the cost of packaging was 1% more then the cost of the raw vegetables, they can now stamp the entire thing with 'product of canada'. So when you go grocery shopping its hard to buy local even when you want too.

That's messed up. Very few producers would have the resources to tell their potential customers, "Look for 'Grown in Canada'"

In America, if it says "Packaged in U.S.A", you can never tell if it was imported or not. I talked to the growers themselves at the Penn State Conference, they'd rather keep it secret and just ship the Chinese ones when they run out of American ones. The grower said a couple customers told 'em to f' off.

There may be money in that market but there are no serious investors, unless they've lived in a cave for the last 20 years.

Try a table at the local farmer's market, you can time your grow to line up with your weekend , a table at my local market is something like $40 for the day and you can charge premium prices for easy to grow stuff,
Bring the whole grow box and cut them off right in front of the customer, THAT is fresh!
Charge $15 for a jar or $20 for a coffee cup with mushrooms growing out of the top and instructions on how to do second and third flushes.
Enokie, Lion's Mane, Pink Oyster,
Easy grows and interesting enough to stop the customers.
Turn twenty cheap Chinese lead paint covered dollar store coffee mugs and some substrate into $400.
