Are you addicted to caffeine?
#7896329 - 01/18/08 07:49 AM (16 years, 2 months ago) |
|
|
In any forms, chocolate, coffee, energy drinks, cocaine, soda? I think my body is trying to tell me to stop, but I really don't think I can. I absolutely must have espresso, a few pulls from my bong lover, and 2 Ultram (tramadol), everyday at lunch. That's my cocktail, and I'm sticking to it. I just think my lymph nodes and skin are pretty much making me quit...coffee anyway.
If you are a frequent caffeine consumer, are you suffering any ill side effects?

Cocaine doesn't contain caffeine unless your dealer puts it in there as a cut.

Dehydration can be a mean side effect. Make sure to drink at least half your body weight in ounces of clean water each day. Even more so if you take in coffees and sodas.

Yes, I'm def. alert, get great workouts, and get a lot done, it's just that something funky is going on w/ my body, and I think I need to lay off it for a while--which sucks, it's a freakin' part of my life.

No, I quit caffeine about six months ago.
I dabbled in some green tea last week and got nauseous and super-shaky and jittery. So that settles it. Caffeine is not for me.

Caffeine has become more my drug of choice lately.
I make strong cups of coffee, and when I drink too much of it I almost feel my liver trying to purge it and then I crash and want to sleep...usually 20 minutes before I'm stepping out the door for work.
I would say I have a moderate tolerance to caffeine, i just overdo it.
The only other side effect is that I get extremely hyper and giddy, and provide at least an hour of good entertainment for my roomate.

My dad told me this story of how he used to drink 8 or 9 cups a day at work, and when he decided to stop he actually had withdrawl symptoms like sweats, terrible headaches, other stuff along with cravings. Caffeine IS a hell of a drug.

I usually only have 2 cups at most, but its really strong. I haven't experienced withdrawl symptoms, because I can go without it for days. Fortunatly its a habit I can pick up and drop, but not everyone is like that.

i'm a recovering redbull addict.
I hardly dabbled in caffeine before... coffee smells good but tastes bitter... most soda tastes like chemicals to me. Coke, Pepsi, Dr Pepper- all taste like a lab experiment. (except when I went to the UK and Caribbean. Then it actually tasted good!) the only soda I liked was cream soda, and I don't even think that has caffeine in it.
I used to have to get up really early to go to work, so I drank a redbull every morning and lunch. It got to the point where the small ones didn't do anything for me, so I had to step up to the 12 ouncers. I had a $7/day habit going.
then I got a new job with a shift that allowed me to sleep in my natural rhythm, so I stopped using, as I didn't "need" it.
Then one night I wasn't able to sleep well and grabbed one on my way to work. I had forgotten how good it tastes. so I started drinking them everyday, even though I didn't NEED the extra energy.
Then I saw a doctor about some other health issues and was told absolutely no more redbull. (as well as basically everything else on the face of the earth that tastes really good but is bad for you)
I've been 2 weeks clean.
I hope I can do it.

i used to drink a 12pack of redbull every day.
i asked my neurologist exactly how bad that really was on my body. he laughed and said it probably wouldn't hurt anything but my wallet.
i stopped doing all that though, cause it wasn't getting me anywhere. caffeine has quite a tolerance factor. eventually i was drinking redbulls and going to sleep. i mostly drink a lot of sodas now.

Accustomed, not addicted.
The only side effect I get is headaches from dehydration if I don't get enough water.

Caffeine is a very interestng drug.
There are a lot of people who fulfill psychiatric criteria for substance dependence when applied to caffeine.
However, it's socially acceptable, and has very few (if any) adverse physical effects. This suggests that "substance dependence" isn't an inherently bad thing.

i can say i'm pretty much addicted.
i drank it from an early age and now it's getting on my nerves: my stomach gets sick every time i drink it and i feel shitty but always get a second & third cup.
withdrawal from caffeine include (for me): irritation, headaches, apathy, drowsiness.

I have droped all sodas, and only have 1 cup of coffie every day or other day. Ive even stopped eating most sweets, and desserts. i may have some dark chocolate, but not often.
This is from a pot of coffie a day, several cans of soda, and sweets out the yun yang.
2 years and going strong. Caffiene, sugar, sweets, milk, and most things with high fructose cornsyrp make me ill. If i eat anything more than fruit and coffie in the morning ill puke, ALOT.

I'm a redbull addict myself, I drink probably 2-3 a day, started out as just a way to stay alert with school and work, but it just got into an everyday habbit.
I can't imagine waking up without one. I used to smoke though and am like 6 days clean from that. Quitting cigarettes is fucking rough.

From Wikipedia:
Chocolate contains a variety of substances, some of which have an effect on body chemistry. These include:
Theobromine: This is the primary alkaloid found in cocoa and chocolate[37], and is one of the causes for chocolate's mood-elevating effects. This mild stimulant belongs to the methylxanthine family, which also includes the similar compound caffeine, with which theobromine is frequently confused.
Tryptophan: An essential amino acid that is a precursor to serotonin, an important neurotransmitter involved in regulating moods.
Phenethylamine: An endogenous alkaloid and monoamine. Often described as a 'love chemical'[38] However, unlike its synthetic derivative amphetamine, it is quickly metabolized by the enzyme MAO-B, preventing significant concentrations from reaching the brain.
Caffeine: This stimulant is present mainly in coffee and tea, but exists in chocolate in very small amounts[37]. The amount of caffeine in chocolate is roughly 6 mg per ounce (about 30 g) of chocolate bar[6]. Compare with 100–150 mg of caffeine in a cup of coffee.

I drink a cup of coffee in the morning, a cup of green tea at lunch, and a cup of coffee when I come home from work. The morning coffee gets me out the door, I mean, no matter how much sleep you get, 6:00 a.m. is just too damn early. The green tea I drink for health and pleasure, not the small amounts of caffeine. By the time I come home from an 8-hour or more workday, I just need that second coffee to keep me going for the evening--it especially gets me going to workout, so, without it, I'd almost definitely stay home and mope accumulating calories. The caffeine also helps regulate my appetite to an extent, which is good since I tend to like food a bit much.
All in all, caffeine may have some detrimental effects, but the positives far outweigh those for me personally. I didn't drink any coffee before about age 23 because I didn't like the taste, and, to a smaller extent, I didn't like the idea of dependency on a substance for daily living. I occassionally drank tea or pop/soda/cola, but I always hated pop/soda/cola and still do. On the other hand, chocolate, specifically dark chocolate, has always been my longtime lover whom I will adore until the end. Add in ground coffee beans to that dark chocolate, and you got a friend for life! Needless to say, coffee really improved my life, increasing my energy, if only for a specified amount of time, to do things I would before just slough off, i.e. working out, studying, cleaning, etc.
I am much healthier now due to caffeine, but I still don't like the idea of "having to have it" to do the things I would've thought I could do without it. I have a degree of depression and anxiety, and caffeine pops me out of bad moods and lethargy and helps set a new baseline to maintain a good mood even when the caffeine wears off. I am generally much happier now, caffeinated and non-caffeinated. Although the idea of being completely free of caffeine or any other "drug" and being completely energetic and happy that way is appealing, I don't think it is realistic to expect that of my body, in fact, I think the cycles of caffeine/downtime, provided they aren't drastic changes between the cycles, are a good, flowing way of life for my body, rather than the static drudgery of drug-free existence. Before caffeine, everything was chore it seemed and most days just blended into another (depression). At least after caffeine, I've learned how to use it to my advantage, and my mental clarity is all-around of better quality. Occassionally, I don't intake caffeine to clear my body and reset, and yes, I get headaches and irritability for awhile, but the lethargy tends to stay, which, in turn, puts me in a bad mood. I guess, in short, you could say I use caffeine to treat my depressive tendencies and anxiety, and I'd much rather use caffeine than any other of the drugs they currently have for such diseases.

caffeine and sugar have never done shit for me, ever. i remember drinking coffee like water as a kid with my grandma and feeling normal as shit. the whole sugar makes kids bounce thing always confused me because it never made me bounce
coffee doesn't wake me up or kickstart my mornings and frankly it pisses me off. i want to know why so many people love coffee but it just doesnt come to me. ive never had an amp/coke addiction either... /jealousy
everyone who likes coffee: treasure it for some people don't have the metabolic ability to like it.

I feel compelled to add that I try to avoid sugar, as an additive to drinks and such, since it does nothing but eventually drop me into a crappy low energy state and, consequently, bad mood. I use stevia for sweetening my coffee, and being somewhat lactose-intolerant, add soy milk rather than dairy to it as well. Plus, stevia is calorie-free, unlike sugar. Stevia took a little getting used to at first, but I really like it now and much prefer it to sugar. Sugar just feels too gunky in my mouth now, but I do grab an occassional specialty coffee drink with the sugar and all the wonderful flavorings they have these days.

Boy oh boy! Do i love caffeine!!
Coffee is definitely me favorite. Soda pop and such has so many additives, its hard to like it for what it is.
Coffee and tea are incredible all by themselves, i think. Adding things to them doesnt make the whole better. Just sweeter, creamier, etc.
I love the caffeine buzz, so i guess in a way i like soda too, if only for what it does. Hasnt always been that way, but ive grown to love it.

Thanks, all.
So, for those of you that consume a fair amount of caffeine a day, you've never experienced anything like swollen lymph nodes? I guess I have something else going on. I don't feel ill, however.
Thank you

Nope, no swollen lymph nodes. I was thinking about making a website just like Energy Fiend until I discovered I'd been beaten to it.
I never got the appeal of redbull. It's got some caffeine, sure, but thats about all. Now that there are much more wholesome energy drinks I'll opt for those. I'm considering buying a case of Rumba energy juice. It's just 100% orange juice + vitamins + caffeine energy blend.
Otherwise its about 40oz of black coffee per workday. I'm mostly over my energy drink addiction; now I'm just a connoisseur

For that one fraction of a second, you were open to options you'd never considered. That's the exploration that awaits you...not mapping stars and studying nebulae... but charting the unknowable possibilities of existence.
