You know you want to spend $7500 on some of the best consumer headphones out there.
You should check out the Grado's SR80 or Sennheiser's HD280 Pro. I own both and they are killer headphones for the price. They are easy to drive (ie you get good sound out of an iPod or any other device without a powerful like out signal) and sound fantastic.

After an afternoon of research I just bought some Koss PortaPros. Everyone seems to agree they are well worth the money ($30) and on par with the Senn PX 100's.
They are really comfortable though and I dig the whole look of them. They are a good purchase if only to use as a reference sound and figure out what you like in a headphone.
One gripe I have with them is that they are fairly loud, I think leak is the term, to other people around you. Other than that they are awesome.
